PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's basketball team has announced the signing of two more prep standouts to National Letters of Intent. The two new student athletes are in addition to the two players that Head Coach Sherri Murrell brought on board during the early signing period in November.
The Vikings new additions are both from the Bay Area. Set to join the squad next season are 5-foot-9 guard Jordan Henry and 5-foot-8 guard Lariel Powell.
Henry just completed her senior season at Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., where she averaged 21.4 points and 5.6 rebounds this winter and earned her third straight All-Empire first team selection and third straight All-North Bay League first team honor.
The North Bay League MVP as a senior, Henry also earned All-Empire Sonoma County Player of the Year honors after leading the CIF North Coast Section in scoring. Henry reached double digits in scoring in 27 of her team's 28 games, and went over the 30-point mark five times. As a junior, Henry averaged 18.1 points and 4.1 rebounds and scored a career-high 40 points against Casa Grande.
Henry, who was a three-time team MVP, finished her career with 1,650 points and made a school record 284 three-pointers.
"Jordan is an amazing shooter who can light it up from beyond the arc," said Murrell. "Her ability to score with confidence will fit great into our high-scoring system."
Powell is from Hayward, Calif., and played at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland. Powell and her Dragon teammates went 25-8 this season and reached the California state Division III title game before losing. Powell had 17 points in helping Bishop O'Dowd to a 57-46 win over Sacramento in the CIF Northern Section regional final. It was the school's first ever appearance in the regional championship game.
As a senior, Powell averaged 8.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game to earn honorable mention All-Metro Area recognition from The San Francisco Chronicle.
"I love Lariel's tenacious defensive mentality. Her quickness and athleticism will be a big contributor to our team's attack mentality at both ends of the floor," Murrell said.
Henry and Powell also are excellent students. Henry has a 4.0 GPA, while Powell carries a 3.22 GPA. Both have been named to the honor roll at their school all four years.
"Both Lariel and Jordan come from high quality academic high schools," commented Murrell. "They excel in the classroom and are well respected people. I want to thank their parents and coaches for the great job they have done shaping these young ladies."
The Vikings, who won their first Big Sky Conference regular season title this year, will now have four signees joining the team next fall. On Nov. 10, Murrell announced the signing of 5-foot-9 guard Allison Greene from Beaverton, Ore., and 5-foot-11 forward Mikaela Rivard from Pasco, Wash.
