See the avatar? She’s the actual Portland State graduate. Since she’s doing post-grad at the University of Rhode Island, and given their season, and especially given PSU’s win Saturday, and given URI is high up on the “others receiving votes” list, it’s kind of a funny comparison.
The first funny part… Hillsboro has a larger capacity than Meade Stadium. URI is kind of a village unto itself rather than part of a larger town, and reminds me more of Sunriver (except for being 6 miles from the beach at Narragansett)… it feels like a resort. There’s no 4-lane roads leading to the campus, but the whole state is basically covered by bus service (about an hour to Providence with all the stops, 45 minutes to drive IIRC). Virtually the opposite of Portland State in nearly every respect.
But it’s the football comparison at question here. Last URI visit to the playoffs was 1985.
URI
v Bryant 45-21
@ Albany 16-14
@ Brown 45-24
v Stony Brook 27-20 OT
v Delaware (ranked 9th at the time) 22-15
They hadn’t started 5-0 maybe ever, fan freak out was as max as it could be for a school that has a basketball arena with a bigger capacity than its football stadium; the Rams were ranked 12th at this point.
@ Towson 7-28
@ Villanova (who beat James Madison) 0-44
v Maine 24-45
“We won’t win another game.” You think there’s a malaise on this board.
@ UMass (FBS, technically) 35-22
“No 3-loss team in the CAA has ever missed the playoffs.”
They finish with a big home game this Saturday against New Hampshire and on the road at Elon. Their board denizens sound like UNH has been an obstacle over the years, but Elon is slightly better in the standings right now.
Whereas…
PSU
@ Hawaii 35-49
@ Washington State 24-44
Kind of our lot in life with the FBS gauntlet.
v Western Oregon 21-7
And EVERYONE remembers the free beer more than the game. Even on eGriz.
v Montana State 17-30
Which was a game for a long while.
@ Southern Utah 20-13
@ Idaho 35-42
Fire the DC! Or Barnum!
v Idaho State 31-10
v Cal Poly 42-21
Expected, right?
@ Weber State 30-18
Whoa!
I’d be curious to know who’d win my matchup. I’d be gobsmacked if someone paid FBS money to stage it like PSU would need. But I’m a realist.
