Was gonna say, I don't think the base 4-2-5 the defense is employing is a "nickel" per say, but rather an additional safety...I.E. "rover"/hybrid LB type deal...although obviously there are nickel packages within that.

My understanding (and I didn't see them scrimmage this Spring) is it is exactly as you describe. That's also pretty much the same defense Sears ran while here. I think our personnel is a lot better now-- which is obviously a huge plus-- but I think the system is much the same.

It'll be interesting to see how Wazzu makes the transition to a base nickel this year as well. They're going to a 33 system. Given the choice between those philosophies, I'll take the 4-2 very time. Playing 3 down linemen without extra LB support scares the hell out of me.

Boise has been playing this scheme for many years with good results. It always works better when the D-Line is disruptive and can stop runs between the tackles, can bring extra pressure from "rover" or LB on long yardage downs and has a solid centerfielder at safety. Despite probable learning curve pain, the aggressiveness of this young defensive team should be disruptive and exciting to watch. Too early for predictions but..... Defense wins at least two games this year, would love for one of them to be UNI.

i have been quietly telling myself that we recruit more quality athletes overall and have better coaching now and that is the reason why our defense will be better under this scheme than when Sears was here.

All this thread has shown is that there are 30 EWU posters currently reading this forum, five MSU fans, and a guy from Cal Poly.

Assuming everyone who reads the forum voted, that's more than I would have guessed for this time of year. Not bad! We may even get to 50 by the time the season rolls around.

50 may be optimistic but HEY we are up to 33 already!

Hey now! Five more people voted for EWU last night. :D Honestly, 50 is a conservative number during the season. The board usually starts to pick up around mid-August.

Go easy on the guy from Cal Poly. I hear he is not a bad guy. :)

Bump.

The Eags, SUU, and PSU seem to be the teams to beat up to this point. Weber St looks like they could be a sleeper, but I think it probably comes down the Dam Cup on Nov 21 for the Big Sky Title.

Griz look average, and MSU couldn't stop a pee wee team on defense.

So many on here thought MSU was the team to beat, but once again, they're proving they can't handle running with the big boys.

What a diference a few weeks can make. No discussion of SUU or PSU whatsoever, yet both have a legitimate shot at winning at least a share of the conference title.

Barnum has Portland playing the best football in the Big Sky right now. SUU probably has the best chance of beating them, and we better hope they do.

Topsy Turvy Big Sky. PSU has a loss in the BigSky and will likely have another before heading to the Inferno. SUU or Montana can do it. Should the Eag's D stay relatively healthy, continue to improve and the OL gets it together, our season comes down to a visit to Montana and the PSU game.

Certainly not counting out trip next week to Colorado, but they haven't really beaten a name team and we catch Weber and NAU at home. All this is conjecture and dependent upon staying healthy. Go Eags.

For us to have a chance at the chipper, we'll have to play at home for at least a couple rounds. That means we'll have to go 9-2, win the Big Sky outright, and receive a top 4 seed. Assuming we're relatively healthy, Montana doesn't look dynamic enough to keep up with us. So I think we get past the Griz again and move to 8-2. That leaves Portland State. I watched their game with the Cats. The Vikings were a very physical and motivated bunch. Especially, their defensive line. Offensively, they look a little like Cal Poly but are a three headed monster at the QB position. I personally believe we should consider another National Championship a legitimate goal this season, so I'll dispense with the "one game at a time" speech. Our season will come down to beating the Vikings. We'll do it by protecting West, and exploiting their secondary. Defensively, all we have to do is slow down their star RB, Jones. See? It's just that easy! In just over a month, the Eagles will be Big Sky champs again and we can look forward to another trip to Texas!

I hope you're right. Unfortunately, I think whoever wins the Big Sky this year might just be the best of a bad bunch. We lost to a very mediocre UNI team and South Dakota State laid waste to Southern Utah. That's not very promising. I watched James Madison play last week and they look like the real deal. I have a hard time seeing anyone in this conference keep pace unless we/they play absolutely perfect football.

There are few top notch teams in the nation this season; everyone has a weakness. Will certainly know more after Richmond and JMU meet this weekend. Those are the two best teams in the CAA. I like Jax St and expect Sam Houston to play well down the stretch. The Redbirds win the MVC with the easiest schedule to finish the season. Their Iowa loss doesn't look to bad now. If I had to rank teams to the Natty, any in the current top eight can win it, SDSU and Moc's very iffy and add Sam Houston. Not seeing any "dark horses" in McNeese or Portland making it through.

How the hell are Montana and MSU ranked? Where's Kennesaw State on this list at 5-1? (just kidding  )
