Our women's softball team got off to a good start this weekend, taking 3 of 4 games from the likes of Concordia and Western Oregon. Hitting was good, fielding was fine, and most importantly, we may have a real replacement for Bernard. Meagan Hendrix, a freshman, pitched three of the games and won two. On the third she made it all the way to the seventh before collapsing for three runs. Looks promising! We have a couple more pre-pre-season games this fall, one of them against UO, which should be fun.

We split with UO today, the last games in the pre-pre-season (the real season starts in February). A split isn't bad against UO - they usually are near the top of the Pac-12. Our hitting was terrific; pitching is always the worry. Our freshman pitcher Meagan Hendrix continues to look promising. She pitched the game we won 5-4 all the way through. Gave up 5-6 hits and 4 ERA, but it's a good start. Wright and Johnson shared the opening game loss 8-0. They clobbered Wright, then Johnson came on to give up 9 (count 'em!) walks in the next three innings. Our new head coach came this summer from 5 years of pitching assistance at West Virginia; her hire as assistant came from UConn where she assisted pitching. We'll see if they make a difference. February's a long ways away.

The softball schedule is out, a big time list of all the Pac-12 and more. 25 games, all of them away, before we get to conference. It all starts in early February. 2 months to work with our shaky pitchers..
