Some Really Awful Basketball in the Big Sky

As badly as Idaho State is struggling offensively, Bengal fans can take some comfort in the fact that the entire conference is really playing some bad basketball right now. On Sunday, three Big Sky teams that a lot of folks thought would be pretty good this year were terrible. Montana, playing without their star big man, Martin Breunig, and two other starters, lost at home to South Dakota, 67-62, blowing a ten-point lead in the process. The Grizzlies shot just 40 percent from the field, 26 percent from three and 58 percent from the foul line. Without their big men, the Griz started four guards and 6-6 Chris Kemp.

Northern Arizona lost at Hampton, 75-66, after shooting just 31 percent from the floor and 18 percent from 3. Quinton Upshur, who looked like the second coming of Kobe Bryant against the Bengals last year, was 3-11 and 0-3 from three. He and Aseem Dixon combined to go 7-27 from the field, 3-15 from beyond the arc.

Finally Sac State fell 66-47 at Seattle, shooting just 30 percent from the field, 29.6 from three and 5 of 8 from the foul line. Only one Hornet scored in double figures -- Mikh McKinney, who had 16.

If the non-conference is any indication, there are going to be a lot of grinders once conference play starts this year. That's good news for an offensively-impaired Bengal team.

The Big Sky is 29th out of 33 conferences in the NCAA power rankings. I remember a time when the Big Sky was a true mid-major conference. Those days are sadly over.

The league went 2-5 tonight, with its only wins over lower division teams. Oklahoma set an NCAA record with a 39-point run against Weber State tonight, taking a 49-4 lead at one point.
