What should the Coyotes expect from the Eagles? It will be the home opener for the Coyotes and having the defending national champions come to visit is creating a fair amount of pregame buzz. I don't know a whole lot about the Eagles, except for what I saw in watching last years national championship game on TV.

I think the Yotes should be able to put some points on the board as we have a lot of returning starters, including all the skilled positions. The Yotes weaknesses the last couple of years has been the inability of the pass defense to shut down the big play, which based on what I saw from the Eagles in last years national championship game could be trouble for the Yotes.

PS - Good luck in the season opener against the Huskies.

goyotes:
Welcome to the board. This game will the first test of the theory that the Eagles have a target on their back, being #1, everyone will bring their A game. We have high hopes of beating the Huskies or at a minimum a strong showing. I think our coaching staff is good enough to keep the kids at a high intensity level and not overlooking you guys, but KIDS is the key word.
We have an experienced QB who has come a long way in the last year at understanding the system, working well with our outstanding receiving corps and maturing. He doesn't throw nearly as many of those passes that make you say, "what the h$%*" was he thinking there.
We have a drop down RB from the Huskies who is a banger, and Mario Brown is very quick to the hole and fast feet. There are also several freshman RB's us fans are seeing for the first time in scrimmage. We should be pretty solid in the run as well. We have a good core group back on the O-line to allow all of those skill players time to do the job.
On D we return Renard Williams, an all american candidate and on the Buchanan watch list, along with several other experienced D-linemen. Good skills at LB and safety. If there is a ?? it is at corners. We lost a couple of outstanding corners and who will step up is yet to be tested. At the scrimmage on Saturday we do have several guys making outstanding effort. They will be tested in Husky stadium the week before our game.
All and all we are a pretty solid team as long as it does not go to their head.
Side note, I will be attending the game and going back home to Aberdeen to visit family afterward. Whats to do in Vermillion or SF? Is tailgating a big deal?
Go Eagles

If your team can't keep the Eagle offense in front of it, your in trouble. That was the biggest problem the Eagles had for a long time on defense. Through most of the 90's and some of the 2000's we did not have big enough corners, and our safeties were to slow. The better teams would just kept taking shots at us, (over the top) until they had two or three big plays. That is what we will do to you with fast and tall receivers. Your safeties will have to make the hard choice to help on the play action and when they make the wrong choice it will be over the top throw and 6pts. You will think your in the game and then you'll look at the big board and you will be down 2 or 3 touchdowns. But, there is a chance that our bus driver can not find Vermillllllon and we miss the game.

I'm glad there is some discussion on this game.....with all the hype of the UW and Montana games that this one is sandwiched between, I hope we're not overlooking USD. Any road game against a decent FCS team is not to be taken lightly.

As far as the team we'll be fielding this season, it's hard not to be a little excited to watch them. Nine returning starters on offense, to include the QB (and MVP of last year's NC game) and all of the receiving corps along with 4 of 5 on the O-Line. The big losses on offense are RB Taiwan Jones who was perhaps one of the biggest play-makers in Big Sky history, a starting Offensive Guard, and a Tight End. If there are any real question marks, it's probably in the running game, but we expect to get solid production from who we have returning, along with a couple of pretty promising true Freshman who may get a shot to play this season. Jones isn't really "replaceable" anyway, as he was a threat to score every time he touched the ball and players like that only come around every once in a blue moon. We run a typical west coast one-back offense - generally three WR's and one TE, situation dependent. All of our WR's are 6'3 or over and have great speed. One goes 6'5 and causes some real mis-match problems for smaller db's. As great as the WR's are, I expect our TE's to be more involved in the passing game this season and more of a scoring threat in check-down situations as we have two with considerably playing experience that were Freshman last year. Names to look for on offense are LT Gabe Jackson, Center Chris Powers, QB Bo Levi Mitchell, WR's Brandon Kaufman and Nicholas Edwards. I can't say a whole lot more about the offense, other than the fact that we are basically loaded there. That's a bit biased, but all things considered probably an accurate assessment and one that most people wouldn't disagree on.

There are probably a few more questions marks on defense, but as I said before we still have 7 returning starters there. The big losses are MLB JC Sherritt (won the Buchanan Award for top FCS defenser last season), DT Tyler Jolley, and both starting corners, one of which is vying for a spot on the Seahawks. That said, most people feel fairly comfortable with the defense, despite the losses. The Johnson brothers (Zach at MLB and Matt at SS) could actually be close to the best football players on the team. Zach had great productivity last year and will pick up most of Sherritt's numbers from last year. Matt Johnson is the best Safety in the Big Sky Conference and will probably break the school record for interceptions this year. The defensive line is anchored by DT Renard Williams, a Senior All-American who should have a legit shot at playing on Sundays. There is a small question mark at the other DT position, as the projected starter is unable to play this season due to some issues regarding his transfer from Washington. At DE, there's a ton of athletic guys there that have good size and speed and make a lot of plays. I think the biggest thing that will stand out about our defensive play is the overall team speed. I think many teams were surprised by that throughout the playoffs, and that included Delaware. When we started blitzing late in the game, their QB crumbled under the pressure.

Hope this helps. Looking forward to watching this one. I still wish USD would have joined the Big Sky with UND as a package deal - you guys kinda screwed things up there and now we're stuck with an odd looking conference. ;)

Tailgating has improved a lot the past couple of years. With the defending national champions coming to town & it being the home opener, tailgating should be a good time. Should be plenty of post game activity in the bars - personal favorites for my 55+ crowd would be Carey's , Char Bar & Pros.

If flying in to the game, can probably fly into Omaha quite a bit cheaper than Sioux Falls and likely better connections. Sioux Falls is one hour to Verm, Omaha is 2 hours. The other option is Sioux City, Iowa - about 45 minutes from Verm & about the same connections & pricing as Sioux Falls.

If looking to watch more football (the SD - EWU game is at 4 PM), could go to Sioux Falls after the game and catch the Dakota Bowl at 8 PM, which matches probably the 2 best high school teams in SD in Sioux Falls Washington & Sioux Falls O'Gorman. It is the big fundraiser for O'Gorman and normally get a crowd of 10,000 + with all kinds of activities before, during & after the game.

Probably more info than you want. Would recommend getting tickets early, as I could see the game selling out. Hopefully EWU brings a good fan contingent to the game. We will roll out the "red carpet" for you, to make you feel at home.

i heard you guys got a new logo coming out? what's the story with that. Will it be on the helmets for this game?

I also noticed South Dakota is coming to cheney for a mens basketball game, that must have been part of this deal?

goyotes;
Shame on us overconfident fans, we should have returned the question asking what can the Eagles expect from the Yotes?
I hope our team is not as overconfident as some of us fans appear to be.
Go Eags!

We know for a fact that EWU is coming to Vermillion with a loaded team. All one has to do is look at your stats against Washington and it doesn't take a genious to know we have our hands full Saturday. On the other hand, we are a team that is capable of giving you a game. Offensively we mix it up pretty well. Our O-line is very large and somewhat physical. Our QB is a scrambler that can cause you trouble if he gets outside your DE's.

I will be at the game Saturday and my tailgate will be setup 3 hours before the game. We will be on the south side of the Dakota Dome and have a grill and bar setup. If you wear EWU gear, I will lookout for you and offer you a beverage or two. I will have a white Explorer and other than that, nothing fancy.

Safe travels.

Right now we are down our starting right guard and tackle. We seem to be a little thin on the O-Line right now. Anyone have any updates as to the injuries to Miller and Post?

I'm pretty sure Miller is out for the season with a sprung Achilles. He and Butorac fought for that spot all camp with Miller barely winning out. Butorac did awesome when he came in in the 2nd qtr and played a great game. No worries there.

I don't know about Post...

Here's stats from their game vs Air Force last Sat.

USD lost 37-20 and EWU lost 42-20

I expect EWU to win by a couple of scores. South Dakota does have a very solid team that is well coached. It will be a hard fought game throughout.

2011 EWU >>>>>>>>>>> 2004 EWU

No disrespect to our great 2004 and 2005 teams, but the main difference between those teams and the 2010 and 2011 teams is our defense. Just a hunch, but I don't think an option team like AF would throw down 42 on this team.

Post has a high ankle sprain and hopes to be ready for the Griz game ! I thought the o-line was awesome against the huskies. BLM doesn't get all that yardage without all the time they gave him ! Very impressive job . Far and away the best 0-line in the BSC ! GOEAGS!!!

the O-line play was excellent and Worthington really played well in place of Post. I also just heard on the coaches show that Miller is out the season with a ruptured achilles and Post is out about 3 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Feel really bad for Miller that is a crappy hand to get dealt going out in the opener. We seem a little think but coach said that if we can get Post back in a few weeks the probability of pulling a red shirt is pretty low.

This is good to hear, but hopefully it's not just rhetoric like we heard from the UW coaches last week. Team's gotta buy into it - this game is on the road against what seems to be a tough opponent.

And while EWU coach Beau Baldwin admits almost everything is in place for a possible letdown, he is confident his veteran team will bring plenty of passion once again on Saturday as it attempts to maintain its No. 1 ranking among Football Championship Subdivision schools and atone for its 30-27 loss to Washington.

“I have no concerns about a letdown, whatsoever,” Baldwin said Wednesday morning, “because we’re sitting at 0-1 right now, and our guys are hungry. I still don’t think a lot of people believed us, or bought into what we were saying – that we were going to go over to Seattle and win that game.

“But that was our mindset. We expected to win, and not getting that win was disappointing. Our guys are mature enough and competitive enough that they don’t like the taste of a loss, no matter who it comes against. And they know it’s going to take a strong week of practice and a great game to get us to 1-1.”

Baldwin suggested that motivating his team for Saturday’s game might have been more difficult if the Eagles had managed to upset Washington.

“Then it might have been an issue,” he explained. “But the challenge of still trying to get that first win is enough to motivate our guys.”

Will Post has as much upside as just about anyone we have on our team. He absolutely dominated in the Montana game last year. The kid is just a huge genetic freak.
