Souther Utah Joining the WAC?

It looks like the WAC is close to bringing back football in the form of an FCS league by raiding the Southland Conference and bringing in Southern Utah. I’m surprised SUU would leave a better conference in the Big Sky for the WAC, but we would probably be better off if they do leave.

The report said the new football conference will start in 2022 and include current WAC members Dixie State and Tarleton as well as Southern Utah moving over from the Big Sky Conference and Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin joining from the Southland Conference.

Several other FCS or Division II programs could be added in the coming months, and the long-term goal of the league is to elevate football back to the FBS, where current WAC member New Mexico State plays as an independent, the report added.

Maybe the Southland should call it a day. Also, how do you guys feel about an additional FCS conference?

Something seems fishy about this reporting. There's no way a new conference could just peel away members from better, more established conferences. Plus, there's no reason for the Texas schools would break away from Central Arkansas and the Louisiana schools as they already have natural rivalries with them. For this to work, the other schools from the Southland must be contemplating a move of their own, maybe to the OVC or Big South.

The part about joining FBS seems especially weird. Southern Utah might be the most financially challenged of all the Big Sky schools, so incurring the cost of moving up seems like a non-starter. Plus, how on Earth could Utah sustain 5 FBS schools if Dixie and SUU move up? Weber is by FAR the most influential and best funded of the Utah schools not named BYU, Utah, and Utah State. If they aren't gonna do it, there's no way these others could make it work.

Big news. Every school on that list I can kind of understand except Southern Utah.... do they even have a fanbase?
