Southern Oregon at Portland State

I was wondering about the all-black helmets as well.


The Good:

Just about everything. Cory was running the ball well, making people miss and keeping plays alive. Connor looked good running the pistol, mixing in some passes and tucking the ball in for some good gains. On Defense and ST, it was good to see a blocked punt and some tipped passes for interceptions. We dominated the run, and shut down their passing attack many a drive. Defenders were putting in big hits and stuffing the run with gang tackles.

What Needs to Be Improved:

- Punt returns. I know that the SOU punter had some wobbly punts, but it is better to just let the ball bounce if you can't catch it. Although we recovered both of those loose balls today, those could easily go the other way against better teams. That one by Monahan almost went back to SOU.

- Drew Hubel didn't look comfortable in the pocket most of the time. He was missing a lot of throws that he should be making, and he wasn't running as smoothly as hoped. Hopefully he will improve with time.

- The kicking game. I know it's early, but missing field goals (like that 26-yarder by Truax) could cost us down the road. Hopefully the kickers can get those things sorted out.

- Fan participation. I think this goes without saying, but there wasn't much of a crowd out there today. Hopefully when the students arrive it will get a bit louder, because it got eerily quiet at times.
 
What a venue Jeld-Wen field is! The renovation was really done well. Vikings totally dominated the game, but it is hard to evaluate considering Southern Oregon is a NAIA school.

I wasn't impressed by PSU. I am really worried again about the o and d lines. I am embarrassed we are playing a NAIA team but having trouble controlling the line. 52-0 does not impress. We have a coach who continues to show he is in over his head..

We had trouble controlling the line today?

CK plays three quarters and this game is 85-0.

I do agree with you about the NAIA program. Not exactly Big Sky level of talent.
 
Only saw the first half but agree there were some significant busts on the OL. Less so on the DL, guys sometimes just got their butt whipped by being a half step slow off the line.

All but a few match ups were even close talent wise. I am brand new to Big Sky so no idea what the talent level should be at this level. What I saw was a fired up team working hard for their staff.

Four possible starters on the O-line did not play against SOU: Waldron, Moxley, Seumanutafa and Rojas, so you weren't seeing the O-line at full strength. I thought the D-line played fairly well. Not a fan of the Viks playing both Willamette and Southern Oregon this year, but at least we have 6 home games this year.

We also have to remember that some of our key players came out early on to give others playing time. For example, it's most likely that Kavanaugh would be staying in the whole game, not having Hubel go in at the 2nd quarter. I agree that the score would have been higher if Kavanaugh had stayed in the game. It's just the first game, and I saw a lot of improvement over last year.

Yes, the crowd sucked...numbers had us at nearly 5,000 though? Didn't seem like that many. The first game in October will be nice, since studnets will be backed.
 
The attendence might have seemed thin (nearly 5,000), but remember we didn't have anyone sitting on the Eastside before. The total was what I had guessed as I walked around the stadium.

Not sure if this was posted already... but came across a great video of behind the scenes footage from the Southern game. Extremely well done and professional looking. I hope they continue doing these this year.
