Southern Utah at Portland State Sept 22

Thanks Vikings for the dialogue!! Suu's forum is pretty much non- existent , good luck to you guys I'm happy with any wins we get and just being competive , tell your coaches stick to the run near the goal line you guys are very good at that.

Did anyone see that last play on the Comcast SportsNet broadcast?

I was checking out the video highlights from the endzone camera angle and that looked closer than I thought since the ball was extended out towards the plane before being knocked loose. I set my DVR for the re-broadcast tonight, so hopefully it'll be a better view.

They showed a replay angle from up above and behind the end zone. It was REALLY close, but I feel like if there was replay it wouldn't be conclusive enough to overturn the call. I would be curious to see what you think.

The last touchdown for SUU was very questionable. At the game, I didn't know why the players were so upset by the call. Watching the other angle on the replay, I didn't see anyway he got in. Granted, they probably would have scored from 1 yard away on the next couple of plays, but would have been nice to have a chance to stop them.

This is getting ridiculous, I remember hearing a coach say if you win two out of the three aspects of the game (Offense, Defense, and Special Teams), you will most likely come away with a W. Our Vikes have been terrible on Defense and Special Teams. Special teams can't keep costing us 10+ points a game, not to mention the momentum shifts. On defense, the run D does a good job. Part of me feels that opposing offenses abandon the run on us because they realize how terrible our secondary and coverage is. I saw quotes in the paper about Nigel possibly making changes on who plays on defense, but I am starting to wonder if we are just running the wrong scheme. I don't understand how almost every time we get burned deep or just don't look back at the ball. Our DBs have no internal clock or awareness. It's too bad because I was really encouraged when the defense held SUU to 3 points in the first quarter. Along with getting burned, we also had crucial interference calls that extended SUU's drives and wound up costing us points.

Our offense did a solid job. Sure there were a couple of turnovers, but if your offense scores 42 points... you have to pull out the victory. Not to mention we outgained SUU 587-397. I was encouraged to see that TC stepped up and was a difference maker out there like I suggested earlier in the week. When Monahan returns, they should make for solid options on the outside for McDonagh. It was good to see Shaq and Noa get going as well. The only problem I really had with the offense was the conservative play calling after the lead had been taken. With our defense, no lead seems to be safe, so the offense needs to keep the foot on the pedal. That may be confidence issues in our freshman QB, but I think we are learning he's far from your average true freshman. Hopefully in the future Barnum keeps the offense on the offensive, and not change the entire dynamic and flow by going conservative.

I think McDonagh extended it in, but it was a tough call to make. Especially with a lack of instant replay, there's always going to be doubt about close plays like that. As mentioned, SUU's last touchdown was questionable. Also, I felt on DJ's touchdown, he didn't break the plane. It looked like he was short of the end zone and lost the ball. It should have never came down to the last run by McDonagh though. I wish that with 18 seconds left, we got McDonagh on a boot and make the decision to run it in or throw to a receiver (or throw it away so clock doesn't run). But like I said earlier, PSU should not have even been in that situation...

I don't think it's the schemes that we run, I just think that it's dreadful secondary play, which makes me think it's a talent issue. I made it a point to just watch the corners on a handful of plays, and they just get killed in every aspect of the position. There was a couple of plays where they were beat badly and their QB made a bad pass to an open receiver, and another where he was sacked. Those would have been big gainers for them.

I wonder if Kincy was not hurt if we would have won last night. Regardless, it shows our severe lack of depth at the corner position.

Marty, do you think we will continue to play the young guys back there? I am pretty sure both CBs were freshman. Do you disregard red shirts and let the young guys get the experience? Honestly, they can't be much worse than what we have seen this season.

Who knows. Typically I've seen that freshmen (true or RS) are prone to making errors. Not their fault, but the game time competition from high school to D1 play is quite large.

It looked like last night the left side corners were 36 (Sibley) and 31 (Jackson). I could be wrong. 24 (Fite) looked to be on the other side, with some others worked in as well. The left side was so bad last night. I don't even know what to say.

I don't recall seeing Jones. Was he out?

Woo! Hoo! Nail biter there, we were truly lucky to get out of there with a win! Why wouldn't Portland St. Not pound that pig skin in there ?? That's what got you down there!! Thanx to the Offensive coordinator of Portland St.
Typically the winners congratulate the loser on a good showing and best wishes on the rest of the season. To come here and "rub it in" is nothing more than a bad winner.

31 - Jackson was getting killed back there. Why does it seem like at every level of football I've ever watched, at some point the DB looks back for the ball, yet PSU doesn't seem to do that? How are you ever going to knock a ball down if you don't know where it is?

So true, it's either they are being coached not to look back, or they just have no internal clock. After a certain amount of time, the ball is either going to be in the air, or the QB is scrambling... Our DBs don't figure it out until the WR makes a catch over them.

Another brutal loss in what is shaping up to be a brutal season. If we were better at one position (CB), we'd be 3-1 and very much in the hunt for the playoffs.

After all the screams and hollers of agony - I like PSU to win as much as the next guy - 24 hours later, I have to admit that that game was what I like about college ball, and why I have no desire to watch UO or OSU play. UO/OSU might as well be the NFL, moneyed, media-ed and professional. Ah, for the unpredictable! Still, it's hard to watch our hapless CBs. And it would be nice if we could get our dropped balls and interceptions down to one or two. And if you want to watch PSU win regularly, you might stop in at the volleyball matches this weekend - we're home finally. And 4-0. And in first place.

Couldn't agree more. A super entertaining game even if a disappointing outcome. Would rather be at this contest, close to the action in Jeld-Wen than either of the other two place (in nose bleed seat to see a predictable outcome). Lots to like offensively for the 2012 Viks. Looking forward to watching Kieran for three more years.

There's nothing worse than losing to a team that you should beat by 2 TDs. The lack of execution at almost every level is starting to get to me. We have a long way to go to be a title contender.

PSU has a long way to go, yes. Coaches talk about playing on the edge of control or playing with controlled abandon. PSU needs some "crazy" mixed in; some cockiness and rage. Put your opponents on their heels before the ball is even snapped. Don't break huddle and shuffle up to the line - race to your assignment and look like you're straining at the chain. Bring back the boot-camp mentality during practice so the players are so fired up to release their energy and frustration on somebody come game day they can hardly sit still. Be disciples of fundamentals and discipline and in your execution, but C'mon, Vikings - get it on!

Yeah, we've been plagued by poor coaching decisions.
