You guys who are talking about suspending Rahe are nuts. Coach should take some heat he was out coached again by someone making 1/3 his salary. But what good is that really going to do?
Here are my 5 takeaways from last night:
1. Our guys shy away from physical play. We knew what was coming last night. Nick Robinson has coached this way ever since he took over. I felt like we were more concerned about bracing for the contact than finishing the shot. We were intimidated before we ever took the court. Look at how many lay up and put backs we missed due to bracing for the contact.
2. You can't win by playing outside in. A few times Coston and Hajek shot from the gap in the zone, why didn't we at least try to keep working it in there instead of the crazy shots we were throwing up.
3. Hajek was really getting after it last night. We should have played him as much as possible. I also felt like Coston was giving a good effort an spurred that first half rally. Play the guys that want to be there and don't mind playing tough.
4. SUU probably doesn't have more than one or two guys that are athletic enough to play at Weber. Yet collectively they can play as a team and kick our arse twice in a season. We need a few blue collar hard working basketball players like SUU has. I think a few of our guys have read a few too many of their press clippings. I'd like to see less chest pounding and flash from our players and more of a blue collar attitude.
5. Tal is right about Hill. He is lost on both sides of the ball. He is as soft as they come and is one of the main reasons our post play has been so poor. We missed on this guy big time!
I'm not calling for Rahe's job (like it would matter what I was calling for anyway) but I also certainly don't hold his staff's ability in such high regard as some. They are losing my interest, though. I can handle the down years as long as I see competent play that seems to match ability (e.g WSU FB.) I don't see that this season and I'm not really sure why it would change much next year with the incoming "talent" being young and inexperienced. I'm really struggling with this coaching staff's seeming inability to form a team system to the talents of the players. Again, why would that change any next season?
#1. Put backs? Most possessions, as soon as a Weber player begins to put up a shot, 3 Weber players are headed to the defensive end of the floor, with the shooter shortly behind. Joel is typically the only one interested in an offensive rebound. He doesn't make a great effort boxing out but does have rebounding desire. It's a tough go with 1 non-boxing, offensive rebounder vs 4 boxing, defensive rebounders. Could that be part of the issue with him looking softer, NBA-unready compared to last season? Hajek has heart and gives it all he has, unfortunately he is not on the floor with Joel much and even if they they are on the floor together, it still turns into a 2 vs 4 situation. Additionally, Hajek's skill set doesn't seem to match whatever ?offense Rahe is running. I gotta pin a lot of this on coaching. You can't teach desire or toughness but you can teach a 0-star, Jr. High girl to box out when a shot goes up.
#2. You can't win without have something on the floor that resembles an offense, where players actually move, cut, screen, etc. Why are they jacking up ill-advised shots? My guess is they have no accountability to do otherwise, or, they ARE running the offensive sets that I don't seem to be able to see. A few of my favorites are Golden shooting 3's with his body at about a 90° angle from facing the basket; Senglin driving into 3 post defenders; and Gittens (and sometimes 1-2 others doing the exact same thing) standing just outside the 3pt line, bent over, watching the ball, never moving the entire offensive possession. None of those things resemble an actual offense. I seriously am questioning what kind of offense this coaching staff teaches. I very much enjoy the ONLY inbound play that the defense doesn't bother defending-- 3/4 court throw in.
#3. 100% agree.
#4. Ya, the recruiting athletic only players to be basketball players does not appear to be a good strategy. Most other BSC teams, including UM, seem to be able to recruit athletes with high bball IQ or specific bball skills and can implement their skills into a team concept. Maybe Weber players have become guys too used to being "the (crazy athletic) guy" in high school with free reign to be the star, and the team can't become the sum of its parts. Whatever it is, there are simply too many problems with basics, mechanics, and IQ for this team to be more than it is. I agree with some that Phil Beckner was a HUGE loss for this team for multiple reasons.
#5. 100% agree and saw and began commenting about this last season but thought it was too early to call him a bust but it's looking probable at this point.
