Eagle Red punch baby. I don't understand how folks can't see what a great coach we have and talent to boot!

Is this sarcastic? It's hard to tell in this environment. 4 wins at this point in the season is pretty hard to defend. In fact, it's totally unacceptable performance. I know nothing about basketball, so it's tough for me to comment on why it's happening, but I know that we are terrible. The team proves it darn near every time they step on the floor. Sucks, but it is what it is....

It isn't sarcasm at all. I've been a fan of Coach Hayford from day one. He has won over 200 games in his career. He is a great coach. He won last year in his first year. This year we have a lot of talent. Folks can't argue any of this so don't even try.

Explain it to me then... if Hayford is a great coach, and the team has lots of talent, why do they only have 4 wins in one of the worst basketball conferences in the country? Again, I don't know a lot about basketball, but I know that we should be better than this. We're losing to teams that are terrible. That typically indicates that we are even worse than terrible.

Not trying to be a prick, but there is a huge disconnect here. We were barely marginal last year, not very good, but at least middle-of-the-road for a terrible conference. Now we're 10 points worse than that crappy team. This team would be totally run out by any of Giacoletti's teams.

LDopa is right: we are terrible. The fact is we are the worst team in an awful conference. I checked out the RPI ratings today and we are #333 out of 347 D1 teams. Also to LDopa's point, 7 of the 10 Big Sky teams are in the bottom 50 of the RPI. The Big Sky is the worst it has ever been AND we are the worst we have ever been.

You have got to be one of the most myopic fans I've ever read. We get it: you're a fan of/related to Hayford. That doesn't change the fact that most of those 200+ wins were at the D-III level, players are quitting the team, and we're in last place in the worst conference in D-I college basketball. We consistently get blown out in the second half, take an absurd amount of 3's (no penetration into the paint), and overall have very poor shot selection. That sounds an awful lot like poor coaching. :twocents:

It's coaching. I'm not saying that it can't or won't improve, but right now it boils down to that, combined with the fact that there's not a lot of team chemistry between Earlywine and Hayford's recruits. We have some really talented young players that will be the nucleus of the team for the next 3-4 years, but right now we are getting out-coached and out-classed in just about every game. I do think Hayford will turn it around, but it won't be this year. We're too young, IMO...

In evaluating this year's edition of EWU basketball would it possible for two people to be any farther apart than 'oldtimeewualum' and 'eagle1990'?

Well, it appears that most people on here disagree with my assessments, not just my worthy adversary! I may need to retire from this blogging thing. Not feeling the love.

1990's unfounded opinion of Hayford's coaching ability is admirable and is what being a "fan" is all about. If he would qualify his statements by saying that Coach Hayford has proven to be a great DIVISION 3 coach, maybe it would carry a little more weight. But this isnt D3, and he is in over his head so far at the D1 level.

Anybody who has read my posts knows that I am a glass-is-half-empty, pessimistic, prove-it-to-me kinda guy. Having said that, I am curious where all of the optimism regarding our young guys is coming from??? From what I have seen, Venky is the only guy who has proven he is good enough to be a starter on a team that can compete with Weber and Montana. Seifert is in his 3rd year of D1 play, and he hasnt shown the ability to be a top-notch post player. Reuter is a small forward version of Kelly - can make a 3 pointer but cant play defense. Powell? Hasnt done anything. Hill? Hasnt done anything. Jorg? Hasnt done anything and is waaaayyyyy too slow. Harvey? Hasnt done anything.

I am not saying that none of these guys will turn out to be good players, but what I AM saying is that while the optimism is admirable, it is unwarranted at this point. I hope you guys are right, and these kids turn out to be good, but right now the future of the program looks very, very bleak to me.

Coach has also admitted that the way he was doing things has not worked as easy as he thought they would at the D1 level. We need to understand that he is still learning too. I'm patient when I can see the bigger picture of things to come. I BELIEVE that coach will figure it out. May be at the end of this year, but he will. I don't think we make the BSC tourney this year. The more the youngins play they better they will be next year. I'm patiently waiting for our shot at the top.

The general is no better than his lieutenants. How much do the asst coaches have to do with our success, or lack of in this case?

I think it depends on the freedom Coach gives them to teach. Nobody will know unless they are in the locker room or at practice. Is he a micro manager or does he delegate? Curious question.

And the lieutenants are no better than the general. While this may surprise people the buck does stop at the top. No matter my positive feelings regarding Coach, he has to get it done.

90', I definitely love your optimism, we need more fans like that. We will find out a lot about Hayford in the next few years after this season. You find a lot out about a coach in their 3rd and 4th year when they have had a chance to recruit their players, setup their system, and have their players in the system for a couple years. Last year was pretty much Earlywine's recruits with a couple Hayford recruits. This year we have mostly Hayford recruits and next year even more. We will find out what kind of a coach and program we have over the next 2-3 years, I expect Hayford to do well and the program to succeed, we just haven't seen much of it this year.

I think a lot of fans are having issues with the fact that we had a decent season last year but most, if not all, of those players were Earlywine's kids. This year Hayford has a lot of his kids and we are really struggling. The buck stops at the top, but we have to give the "Top" a chance to setup and implement their system, with their players first. Hayford hasn't had enough time to be judged yet, but I think most of us would like to see some pretty big steps towards improvement next year. I do think he will end up being a great EWU coach, but time will tell.

I think everyone will agree, I hope you are 100% right about our coach and our talent and I'd be happy to eat a steaming plate of crow next year while you rub my nose in it following our 20-somethingth win.

:+1:

I think a lot of fans have blinders on and can only see what is in front of them. Most of the time that is a very tell tell sign of what you have, but NOT what we WILL have. Patience glasshoppas....

Great post. While our record won't be very good this year, I think we will have a very strong nucleus for the next 3 years. Jois is a great player who does everything - I think a lot of offense will revolve around him.

One thing is for sure, we need to get a lot better defensively.

Either way, I'll be watching tonight!
