Portland State football: Special teams make special plays

When you have a realistic chance to block a punt/field goal every time, you get in your opponents' heads a little bit. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some punt-returns for TDs laster this season if we keep harassing the opposing kicking team and throwing off their timing.

Another blocked punt, three field goals by Brown, and a recovered kick-off. Special teams is continuing to have a huge impact on games. I find my self now expecting the Viks to block punts.

I'm impressed with the low number of roughing/running into the kicker calls on us. Typically teams that put a lot of pressure on punts get flagged on near misses. The angles that our guys take seem to just have the guy fly in front of the kicker from the side, rather than up the middle where they hit the kicker if they miss the block.

Good special teams coaching.

We might not be very special next year. Coach Stacy Collins is in the running for the head coaching job at SD School of Mines (D2). He has some history there and sounds like they like him. He didn’t last long, must be trying to capitalize on his team’s good year.
