Sacramento State (FCS - CA): Per source, head coach Marshall Sperbeck is leaving the program. We are told that defensive coordinator Jody Sears will serve as interim head coach. Will update...

Sad but true...just heard this AM. Though not everyone on this board agreed with the teams success or lack of success over the years...I for one appreciate all he has done.

He helped take a program that was loosing scholarships due to NCAA academic regulations and is now in most aspects very competitive in a very tough Big Sky program.

I won't go into details of the dismissal as I am sure it will make its way out in the press....but again I just wanted to say thank you Coach Sperbeck for helping many of these young men out over the years.

Go Honets!!!

If I'm the AD, I'm literally on the phone with Osterhout at ARC as we speak making an offer.

It's obvious something happened off the field with Sperbeck. A coach doesn't just resign after spring practice out of the blue going into his make or break season. My best wishes to he and his family.

***UPDATE***

What we know about Marshall Sperbeck's sudden resignation at Sac St:Someone (probably fired asst) sent info to NCAA,urgin investigation...

Sears will be the interim coach for 2014, interesting I think the same thing happened to him at Weber St, coach resigned and he got the gig...

No so fast, with the Osterhout call.

I'd call these guys first,

Turk Shonert (NFL/UFL OC)
Paul Wulff (49ers OA)
Andy Buh (Cal ex-DC)
John Defilippo (Raids OC)
Scott Beattie (Cal Lute DC)

Shocking news. Thank you Coach Sperbeck for all you have done for the program. Football is in far better shape now than it has been since Coach Mattos' last years. I have no idea what brought this about. If it is some kind of NCAA violation (which I hope it's not) I would look toward ARC. It seems they have collected a number of dissident ex Hornets over there.

I wish Coach Sears the best and I will support him this season. This team is deep in talent and has a favorable schedule, hopefully we will still have a breakout season. Hopefully Coach Sears will prove that he has what it takes to be a successful head coach. If not we need to get the best, proven head coach available. There are some on this board that are anti Wanless, but you have to give the man credit, he has made some pretty strong hires during his tenure.

I'm shocked that it happened now. What I want to know is what Joe Davidson knows in that he says in a tweet that he has copy of the anonymous report that was also sent allegedly to the NCAA.

 It's about time...now if they can connect Wanless to any kind NCAA violation or lack of institutional control we can have a clean sweep and redeal the cards.
Let's face it, Sperbeck never won more than six games in a season and he pissed a bunch of people off with the way he ran the program. I'm willing to bet this deal is going to be much worse than most people think.
Does anyone believe he would just walk away if there wasn't tangible evidence of significant infractions?

@OSH :thumbdown:

From what I have heard these aren't infractions on the scale of USC, Penn St, Miami, or even the stuff Montana recently went through...but something that will likely cause a good hand slapping to the program from he NCAA if anything. Don't want to speculate here but it sounds like a former employee/coach or athlete, didn't like how they were treated when let go and complained via an anonymous letter to the SacBee, school and NCAA.

I for one appreciate all he has done for the program and wish him the best.

I'm hoping that the NCAA doesn't do anything more than a warning, that Coach Sears has a successful transition and that the players respond outstandingly....as for the anonymous tipster...good luck with your career in whatever you do, as it won't likely be in the field you were just in.

So you think he walked away over a "hand slapping" infraction...that makes sense to you? Try to be reasonable, it is doubtful he was shown the door over a small infraction.

As far as the tipster...if there wasn't cheating going on there would have been nothing to report. And, how do you know it came from one source? I'm hearing it was a collaboration of multiple sources. I wish I could say I was part of it.

And if the "tipster(s)" knew that there were violations going on while they were still employed why didn't they report it. Why wait until they are released to suddenly come clean. By doing so they are admitting that they were part of the wrong doing.

From what I am hearing, it's not really the NCAA violations that are the main reason for the school asking for his resignation, but maybe some personnel issues of time worked without pay and minor recruiting violations. Look I have seen coaches and personnel asked to resign for a lot less, whenever an employee or Ex-Employee threatens lawsuits against its current or past employer, the employer will do whatever to protect itself...so yes it's reasonable...

Lots of speculation to the full story at this point...only hearing what was told to the players.

OSH...Not sure what your gripe is about Sperbeck and his tenure with Sac St, but I assume you have your reasons. I can only speak to my personal experiences.

Go Hornets!!!

So True!!! :thumb:

Joe Davidson was just interviewed on the Grant Napear radio show. Davidson said that not much is being said or released right now. He spoke with both Sperbeck and Wanless, but they wouldn't really talk details. Davidson did allude to some possible "minor recruiting violations" and a "mutual agreement" for Sperbeck to resign.

Davidson says there will be more on SacBee.com and in the paper tomorrow as he is still working on getting info. Davidson was surprised tho of the sudden departure. He said Sperbeck has two years left on his contract.

Certainly an odd time of the year to lose a coach unless there were extenuating circumstances. It will make it harder to recruit a new one since most good ones looking to move have already found homes. My best guess is that this sudden change will cost Sac State a game or two next season, maybe some players.

I am sorry to see Sperbeck go. I thought he had turned Sac State's program and had it set for some future success. I wish him and his family the best and hope Sears can keep the program on track until a new head coach is found following the 2014 season.
