Spokesman-Review unit previews

With Spring Practice in full spring, I can't wait for this season.

Defense - I think we will have a fantastic defense if we can get some great LB play. Our secondary may be the best in the FCS and our D-line looks to be filling in nicely. Hamlin will have another great year and we shouldn't sleep on McCarthy at LB, if we can get another 1 or 2 LB's to step up, our Defense will be rock solid, one of the best in the Big Sky, if not the best.

Offense - We lose our main receiving corp but in return we gain a TON of speed. Hill is lightning fast and should see a lot more time. Kupp looks to be a great receiver that redshirted and I think Mitchell and Clark bring a lot of experience and will make the most of their chances with increased time. We will definitely have some new looks and I would expect to see some zone read. With Brown back he gives us a little bit more of a shifty, quick back, where Bronson is a beast and Forte has speed, but is a beast as well. This may be one of the fastest offenses as far as team speed, we have ever had at EWU. For as much as we hear about the other QB's in the Big Sky, I would take VA over any of them, any day.

I agree, so lets not get him "JACKED UP" running the option.

Shoot, I totally forgot about Hamlin (not sure how I forgot since I believe he led the team in tackles). He's almost the prototype EWU linebacker these days, undersized with a lot of speed. You could make a pretty good argument for 5 pre-season all-Big Sky first teamers.

Just so you know the zone read is not the option. The option is what Navy runs. And they never pass. I encourage you to watch how the zone read works. It's implemented to stop crashing DE's and keep them honest. If the DE crashes, it's normally an easy 5+ yards and a slide for a QB. The zone read hardly ever compromises the health of a QB. Again, try and YouTube zone read philosophies. I think at least having it in the arsenal would work fantastic and keep those DE's and even LB's honest.

clawman,
Be 8-) 8-) , Anthony Larry is back and doing great. Remember Branson Schmidt, CV grad, is looking strong and he will be a beast on the DL, along with Zachary Johnson (WSU) TR, Derek Westin (UW) TR, Dylan Zylstra, Ashton Boothroyd. Some recruits fm last year, Anthony Lira, Joe Hunt, I don't need to talk about Evan Day, he has been a "BEAST" since the 1st day he got on the field, and getting stronger. Pulu is taking it easy for a while so his foot can heal properly. Remember Miquiyah Zamora LB, he is going to do great things for the team. I spent a lot time between the rest room for the heat, and the practices, got to keep these old bones loose. ;) ;) p.s. I must give Jim Allen a lot of credit, he is doing an outstanding job with the Articles, and who is doing what. Mario Brown looks good catching the ball across the middle, Jabari Wilson, RB, and Badass Quincey Forte, RB, is getting "Bigger and Better". Go EaglesC!!!!! Vic Wallace

To All,
I don't know if most of you saw OBrien from Montana State re-enlist into the Marines, because of what happen in Boston. He did spend 4 years in the Marines already, he said what happened on Monday in Boston left a big Hole in his heart. He is giving up his opportunity with the NFL, to fill that hole in his heart. I congratulate that young man for that. What happened in Boston did bother myself also, as I am sure it affected all of you, don't think they will want this old body now. It is 39 years since I retired, last Feb 1st,so all I can do is hope we get that SOB that did that cowardly Act. Pray for our country and its Citizens. Hate being political on this blog, had to let you know what one of our Big Sky Player is doing for us all.!!!!!GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!! Vic Wallace

Hey Vic,
Good to hear from you. I noticed Pulu was injured in the scrimmage but do not know the severity of the injury. Do you know what happened?
There was another guy on the cart, a wide receiver I believe, that had ice on his knee as well. Do you know more about him?

Vic, he's from MSU-Northern of the Frontier Conference (D-II). Very cool story though, and good on him. :notworthy:

SE174,
I told you I was not perfect, however, I am glad someone is aware of what is happening. Thanks for the correction, & Be 8-) . Haven't seen you out as yet, maybe you are there when I am not ;) . Vic

clawman,
I wasn't at the scrimmage on Saturday, windy and cold. I saw Jordan Pulu with brace on his knee. His brother Andru told me he will be out for the spring. Andru is recovering from the injury he got last year. I didn't notice any WR injuries on Tues, will check it out today. I did notice Shane Stagg DB in a walking boot, he got the same injury he got last year. He is a Sr. this year, he stated he will try for a 5th year. I must say this young works his butt off, he was in the weight room working out with his foot in a boot.
Explained to him as much as we would like to see him play, his health means more to us, however, he would have to make his final decision. Will be out today 4pm, check things out. Go Eags!!!!!Vic

Haven't made it out there yet, but I'll definitely go to one of the scrimmages.

Reference the injury, there were two Tight Ends, Alex Pond from Colville had one of his knee in a brace, also Jake Withnell from Oregon were both on the side lines not participating in practice. Couldn't tell if anyone else is injured. You will see numerous Players not practicing, they are getting healed from some of the injuries last year.

Off the subject, two Russian Brothers, attending MIT, shootout in Boston, one dead, one on the loose. Both involved in the bombing of "Boston Race" Monday. Vic

Yeah, I was gonna bust you on that omission.

Good post Marc. I think both McCarthy and Hamlin will have great years. The question at LB is depth. I find it interesting that they've moved Jordan Talley there. He will definitely fit Dopa's LB prototype.

As for the zone-read, excellent point by Clawman about our defense having to practice against it. It's everywhere right now and we'll definitely be seeing it in Huntsville which will be a CRITITCAL game for us. Have they been running it at the scrimmages at all?

Kalm,
Jordan Talley was the WLB on the first unit most of the time yesterday. I was trying to watch way too many things at the scrimmage and was not following him closely. What I did see was his speed and ability to drop into coverage on the slot receivers. I want to watch him closer at the Red-White game. There wasn't a lot of edge speed runs yesterday so didn't get a feel for the defenses lateral speed to get to the edge. Miquiyah Zamora will help with the linebacker depth. He was playing inside and outside LB at times yesterday and was flying around. He is a ball hawk.

Didn't see any zone-read offense yesterday.

Thanks for the update GE. Your location says "Soaring over the Two Medicine Valley". Are you an infiltrator into enemy territory?

Per Jim's LB installment:
Hamlin, who is a junior academically, may yet get another year beyond 2013, assuming he successfully petitions the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility stemming from a knee injury that cost him the entire 2010 season.

Yes, reconnaissance completed. Enemy has a soft defense, limited offensive weapons and a dumb fan base. A late October invasion by the Eagles will end in an embarrassing Griz loss.

Regarding the read-option, the beginning of this interview with Beau I think clearly alludes to it being added, but like Seattle, not the primary scheme. Overall, a really great interview, and very insightful.
http://700espn.wordpress.com/2013/04/24/coach-baldwin-talking-about-practice/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

  • "We've been doing some things schematically a little bit different, just certain things that can give us an edge in a couple ways both offensively and defensively."
  • "There's no doubt that some of the things we're doing tailor a little bit more to some strengths that Vernon has, but by the same right you don't want to lose the things you still do well and have done well for a long time."

Can't wait.

A few other highlights:
  • Regarding Cooper Kupp, "He's special. I mean he really is, and I don't wanna throw that word around.... film junkie as a freshman..."
  • Said that with all the talent we have at safety, we'll be utilizing a 3rd safety sometimes, depending on who we're playing and game situations.
  • "First time in 12 years at Eastern during football practice Zach Johnson's not out there practicing..."
  • Talked about Erik Meyer's mentality having changed after coaching last year, and his phenomenal start to Shock season (40 TDs, 0 INTs).
  • Talked about Zach Johnson and the three WR's in relation to the upcoming draft.
