I went and parked next to the stadium and did not get a ticket. They rarely ticket after 6 PM, especially on a Friday. Plus there was a baseball game at the same time so I think parking was fair game. The buzz kill was scheduling this on the beginning of Easter weekend as the attendance was paltry at best. Maybe a hundred people there not including the players, coaches, and department staff.
Performance was meh. Nothing great, but not completely terrible like last years’ spring game. The team should be a little better, but of course there is nowhere to go but up for this program.
QB: Thomson got the most reps followed by Clapper and then a few for Ale. Thomson had some momentum going towards the end of the scrimmage. IMO Clapper throws the better ball, but didn’t get into a rhythm like Thomson did. They both threw some picks. Should be an interesting fall camp for those two. Ale is Merker 2.0. No K-Ham tonight.
RB: Jountti, Perkinson, and Gable got the reps here. Each bring something different to the table. Jountti is the most balance of the 3 as far as rushing, catching, and balance between power and speed which we got a glimpse of last season. Perkinson is the bigger back, probably best used between the tackles. Gable is the small speedster that showed some flashes tonight.
OL: Right tackle was constantly getting burned. Fortunately the refs weren’t calling holding penalties tonight or there would have been plenty of them. The rest of the OL was ok, a few breakdowns that allowed pressure, some good blocking that opened up some running lanes. It was a mixed bag here.
WR/TE: Made the plays when they were there. Mostly the typical routes we have been accustomed too the last few years: short outs, fades, and underneath stuff. There were a few down the field plays made but nothing spectacular. We have some experienced WRs so if the QB has time they should be able to move the ball.
Defense…ehh…Harriel had his named called quite a few times, Meeter did as well. See the OL description above to know how the DL did. The offense didn’t reach the endzone more than a couple times.
Kickers nailed everything under 50 yards. Medeiros made his 50 yarder, Kuljian didn’t.
