Spring Ball

Went out to the practice this morning and enjoyed a good day of football. Sears was working with the corners and AP was working hard with the safeties. Didn't get a real good feel for the new D line coach, as he seemed to be having trouble moving around and didn't seem to engage with his players much. Overall, good energy today. A couple of folks missing including Cole Hannum who is not even on the roster for 2014. Also, Vercher was not out there today and I didn't see him on the sideline. Not sure what that's all about. It's still early but it appeared to be a well run practice with the guys fired up for some football and hitting somebody.

I thought the Hornets looked good today. Some were missing, No Milonovic, Nielson, Vercher, Hikutini and Carter did not play. But were all present. Offense had a few longer runs. Defense looked very Vanilla. Probably still working on new terms. Kickers made all the kicks and Heath had a couple good punts and snaps looked good. Sankey was at Linebacker. Didn't see the UCLA transfer.

Thought there was some good balance, defense won some and offense won some. Kniffin played a lot and showed some promise does make some freshman mistakes but moved the offense really well. Looks like Peterson is doing a good job with him as well. Broadnax showed up a little bit and I like the WR from Reno. Defensively looked like they are getting more creative and getting more in from the last scrimmage. Had a couple of punts in the game and all field Goals and PAT's were good from Cornish and Aguliar. Saw a few recruits there as well seem like. I really liked the excitement of the team and the team work. They looked like they were having fun. Just hope Sperbeck can keep them going. Do not need any bumps in the road for the Hornets.

I caught the last 30 minutes or so. Couldn't see if Vercher was there as I was on the far side. Since Kniffin was the only QB that played, he was either hurt or is gone.

Kniffin looked ok for a R-FR. He didn't look like a deer caught in the headlights but made some bad decisions here and there. Made some good plays as well (nice fade pass to set up a TD).

Running game still sucks. Took 4 tries to stuff it in the endzone from the 1 yard line...the same play 4 times. :ohno:

DL seemed to outplay the OL, they stuffed plenty of runs and chased Kniffin around quite a bit.

Hard to get a read on the secondary. Hard to see if there will be much difference from last season. Defensive sets looked similar.

Sankey is a beast. He was everywhere hitting everybody.

Vercher and McDade are injured. They will be out till fall camp. The Reno receiver is a big body but rather inconsistent. The key guys in the fall will be Harrison, Namdi and Deandre at receiver. Secondary is much improved. The corners have played well. Armstrong and Payne have progressed a ton. Safety is in flux because of injury but expect to see Robbie Kendall and Mike Sellers start with Nick Crouch playing a ton as a rotation guy with sellers.

With the O Line there were a few guys out. 3 freshman were playing along with the transfer center. Milonovic looks like he is coming back from injury Nielson was suited up didn't play along with Wallace, been like that all spring.

Glad to read that Daniel Kniffin is getting a chance and doing an ok job thus far. I follow HS football in the area, specifically the SFL and the Rocklin Thunder program, and saw Kniffin play for several years. The kid certainly has the potential to become a good player.

I've about given up on this program. They want to be in the elite of the BSC, but you wouldn't know it by how they market the program. Nothing on the website about the spring game, except on the spring schedule, they have an updated roster, but when a lot of the players are wearing different numbers than what's on the roster it turns into a cluster f%^$ trying to figure out who's who. We had maybe a couple hundred people at the "game" today. Hell, Montana gets thousands at their spring game and makes a big deal of it complete with tailgating and all. Okay, that's off my chest....

Kniffin looked good again today. Both field goal kickers looked good with Aguillar the better of the two the ball comes off his foot higher than Cornish who was kicking some line drives. Heath had a couple of decent punts. The end...

Montana has no competition for its market share. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison. We average about 8k during the season, hard for that to translate into more than a few hundred for the spring game. I couldn’t make it, just had more important things going on.

Passing (comp.-att.-int.-yards-td)
Kniffin 4-4-0-149-3; Safron 11-16-1-139-1.

Rushing (att.-yards)
Safron 2-8; Coleman 2-5, TD; Kellermann 2-3; Warren 3-3; Robinson 5-1; Kniffin 2-0.

Receiving (rec.-yards)
Harrison 4-105, TD: Agude 4-66; Broadnax 2-21; Cox 1-70, TD; Hunkle 1-13, TD; Warren 1-7; Robinson 1-4; Sander 1-2, TD.

Defense
Sankey INT, Alvaro Sack; Totty TFL, Alcala TFL.

Looks like the secondary got scorched and the running game is still nonexistent. Looks like tons of work needs to be done.

I watched um go the last three Saturdays and the team looked good for this time of year, especially compared to the last few spring campaigns. As expected the defense was a bit ahead of the offense, but there were a few very bright spots everywhere.

Offense:
Big line, a couple of hard charging RBs, a veteran QB with serious experience and a freshman QB who stepped right up, made some plays and opened a few eyes. The offensive attack is more balanced and far less predictable than in the past. Yesterday the offense showed a quick strike ability............ to score fast.......from a long way away. When was the last time anyone saw that around here?

Defense:
Fast, aggressive, hard hitting, energized and fairly deep. The new coach has everyone involved and the energy level is off the charts compared to the past. I saw swarming gang tackles and good pursuit, even after the play was already decided. And best of all I saw a new kind of D Pride. If this group gels and stays healthy, we will be competitive.

Special Teams:
Smooth and strong. Much improved from the last several springs. Snapping was good (not perfect) but should be fine. I saw a strong competition between the kickers and both showed the ability to hit 55+ yard balls. I agree that Aguilar put up the better / higher kicks but Cornish has the better form. It will be an interesting Fall camp competition. I did see that Cornish had to deal with several poor holds yesterday. He saw laces 3-4 times and a couple weird leans. His one line drive kick yesterday was rooted in the hold. Heath is a very good punter who should make an impact next season.

Promotion:
Still lacking in my opinion. I know football fans have many things to do at this time of year but surely we could do a better job of promoting Hornet Football. It would be nice to read articles about the team and how we stack up against the 2014 schedule. And I would love to read stories about the players new and old. Give us a reason to care and continue hoping for success.

Looking forward to being there next fall and cheering for a seemingly improved team. I predict a better than 500 finish.

GO HORNETS!
