Montana has an emerging pass rusher in sophomore-to-be Tyrone Holmes.

Eleventh in a series about spring football across the Football Championship Subdivision.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Cal Poly, 17 starters returning.

Sacramento State, 17 starters returning.

Northern Arizona, 18 starters back.

It's getting scary at the top of the Big Sky Conference title race. It just may no longer be the logjam of Eastern Washington, Montana State, and if it returns to form, Montana.

At 13 teams deep, the Big Sky surely will be wild and wacky each season as it was in Year 1 after expansion, when Cal Poly, Eastern Washington and Montana State shared the crown - this after Northern Arizona won its first six conference games but then fell in its final two games.

STORY LINES

Eastern Washington has been hit hard by graduation and early departures, but the schedule is equally as daunting: road games at Oregon State, Toledo, Sam Houston State, Montana and Cal Poly as well as a home game against Montana State.

Having been reinstated to the team after being acquitted on a rape charge, Montana junior Jordan Johnson could very well be the starting quarterback again. He last played in 2011 and led the Grizzlies to a share of the Big Sky title and the FCS national semifinals. Without him last season, UM finished 5-6 for its first losing record since 1985.

Montana's rival, Montana State, has won a share of the last three Big Sky titles. Coach Rob Ash's squad wants to get back the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, and the player who holds the key to doing so is fourth-year starting quarterback DeNarius McGhee.

A new era has begun at UC Davis after Bob Biggs retired following his 20th season. First-year Aggies coach Ron Gould developed some terrific running backs as an assistant coach at the University of California.

Speaking of UC Davis, it will be interesting to see if all four former Great West Conference teams that came aboard last season - Cal Poly, North Dakota and Southern Utah are the others - can step up their play in the grueling conference schedule. Led by Big Sky tri-champion Cal Poly, the four were a combined 17-15 in conference games last season.

After falling just short of the FCS playoffs last year, Northern Arizona is anxious to make amends with its veteran team. The Lumberjacks will get a special season out of senior running back Zach Bauman.

Idaho State head coach Mike Kramer reworked his coaching staff, including the reassigning of duties among some of the returning assistants, in an effort to jump-start their struggling program. The Bengals last won a road game in 2006.

OH, YES, THEM AGAIN

In a conference with five of the last 10 Buck Buchanan Award winners, Montana senior linebacker Jordan Tripp hopes to make a run at FCS defensive player of the year.

North Dakota wide receiver/kick returner Greg Hardin is one of the best breakaway players in the FCS. He averaged 151.6 all-purpose yards per game and scored 15 touchdowns last season.

It's been a while since you heard the name Bo Bolen, but the Weber State fullback/return specialist is worth remembering. He was named to The Sports Network FCS Second Team as a freshman in 2009, but has spent the last two years on an LDS Church mission to the Phillipines. He will be a junior this season.

UC Davis' Randy Wright is entering his fourth season as the starting quarterback, but he threw for more interceptions (14) than touchdowns (13) as a junior.

Northern Arizona provides double-trouble at cornerback with Anders Battle and Lucky Dozier.

Sacramento State's running back Ezekial Graham can eat up the yards as a runner or pass catcher.

Portland State is trying to formulate its wide receiver rotation because it lost two starters as quarterback Kieran McDonagh can really get the ball downfield. Returning slot receiver Thomas Carter, who converted from quarterback, had 32 receptions to lead the team.

BREAKOUT PERFORMERS

Montana State has lost linebacker Jody Owens, the Big Sky's defensive player of the year, but Na'a Moeakiola has dominating ability as well.

Northern Colorado is counting on JUCO transfer Kyle Todd to have an immediate impact at defensive end.

With the loss of 1,500-yard rusher Deonte Williams, slotback Kristaan Ivory becomes the featured back in Cal Poly's triple option.

Eastern Washington will find it impossible to replace the wide receiver triumvirate of Nicholas Edwards, Greg Herd and Brandon Kaufman. The one to watch this season is senior Ashton Clark, although the Eagles need redshirt freshman Cooper Kupp to take his excellence in practice to the main field.

Fatu Moala will be Southern Utah's go-to wide receiver, but it's always a deep position and Mitch Jessop, who missed the last four games a year ago, wants to put his 6-foot-4 size to good use.

Montana defensive end Zack Wagenmann took a lot of the spotlight last season, but another young D-end, sophomore Tyrone Holmes, who had five sacks as a true freshman, will blossom this season.

After serving as the backup quarterback in 2011 and redshirting last season, Idaho State's Justin Arias hopes to post Kevin Yost-type numbers as a junior.

POSITION BATTLES

The left cornerback spot on Northern Colorado's defense should be a terrific battle between Courtney Hall and James Davis, but really much of the secondary is up for grabs. Seven returning players had starts a year ago and six more are coming off a redshirt season.

Weber State is replacing two-year starting quarterback Mike Hoke. Backup Jordan Adamczyk was ahead of Ben Maraz and Tyler Parson last year, but the trio returns, and redshirt freshman Jadrian Clark and JUCO transfer Alfonso Medina will be in the mix, too.

Opponents picked on Portland State's secondary last season and senior cornerback Dennis Fite is the only full-time returning starter. Emerging Nick Rothstein should grab a starting safety spot.

Cal Poly is replacing its team leader, quarterback Andre Broadous. Tanner Trosin, Vince Moraga and Chris Brown are vying for the starting job.

Sacramento State could replace standout safety Ryan McMahon with one of two FBS transfers, Tyronne Duckett (Washington State) or Mike Sellers (Hawaii).

Southern Utah has a bunch of quarterback candidates as it looks to move forward without three-year starter Brad Sorensen. At the forefront are redshirt freshman Austin Young, JUCO transfer Aaron Cantu and Utah transfer Mitch Dahlen.

How bad does our schedule have to be EVERY YEAR when this is always brought up as it relates to our chances? No other Big Sky school gets a mention of their schedule working against them.

Probably because the reporter researches message boards to see which topics are the main story at each school. ;)

We aren't the only BSC school with tough schedule.

There's a big difference between "tough schedule" and the bilge handed down to our coaches by the AD. Our schedule can just be described as insane. How can be totally incapable of finding a non-conference FCS opponent to play at home, and when we finally schedule our first one as a home/home series in several years, we choose one that's been in the National Championship the last two years? Montana goes out and gets Liberty from the Big South, Montana State lines up Drake... we get Sam Houston State, ouch. And yet that pales in comparison to the utter stupidity of playing Toledo on the road or South Dakota in a one-time only road game.

The last two home and home scheduled are with us traveling first. What SHS buy us out and we have to fill a schedule hole next year. Ask North Dakota State how that works.

We will probably schedule a FBS game in place of it if that happens.

South Dakota would have been a great return game this year in place of Toledo, would have made our schedule light years better.

Seems like lately we end up playing the first game on the road in our home and home deals. I see we scheduled MSU for 2 non conf games in 2014 and 2015, and we travel their in '14 and they come back in '15.

Hoping one of these days we will have more home games than road games in a season. 2010 was the last year we technically had more home than road games, and that worked out great, although one of those home games was in Seattle.

Nothing we can do now, play the games that are in front of us. I am looking forward to a Sept. home game and a trip to Oregon State...

Because Montana can afford to pay them, we cannot.

To All,
First Spring Practice commence April 4th, @ 4 pm. Probably 3 Scrimmages before RED/WHITE April 27th, before Lobster Feed. Can't wait to see our team. Our team will be ok. We have some outstanding Players that Red Shirt last year. Be COOL: 8-) 8-) 8-) Vic

I'm still sure Chaves is aware of of all these circumstances and is hamstrung more than we think.

The other problem with these schedules is that they don't do much to help build a fan base. As you've pointed before, September games are the best time to showcase our product and hook occasional or new fans. But when we frequently have only one or no home games before October and one less home opponent than we could have most years, it's that much more difficult. It's not as if TV coverage is going to give us the exposure we need.

Ronthewiseoldeagle,
We have lost 3 great WR, and many more Athletes from our team. Like I've said before, every 4-5 years we lose Great Players, this something I have become accustomed of seeing. I try not to worry about the ones that have left, hoping they can all find great jobs in whatever they pursue. One thing I will never do, underestimate the Players we have left. I remembered Coach Graham stating earlier this year, "Vic" we did lose great Players, but the cupboard is not empty, we will have replenish our team and will be ready to go. From our Recruiting last Feb, we have done that, along with the Players from last year, we are ready to strike.

Remember these WR, Cooper Kupp, Nick Lenoue, Keylin Huddleston, Cory Mitchell, Shaq Hill, Ashton Clark, Daniel Johnson. These that we already know what they are capable of doing. We have some great ones in the new group Recruited last Feb. Coach Sawyer will have some great DL of last year that did not play, just practiced. Zach Wimberly, Anthony Lira, Joe Hunt, fill in with Andru Pulu, Jordan Pulu, Zach Chapman, Will Katao, Evan Day, Ashton Boothroyd, Dylan Zykstra, Jakob Pugsley, and Recruits coming in. Got go. Can't wait until April 4th to get started. LBs,DBs, RBs will be great also. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

To All,
New FB Roster are out as of a few days ago. Some of our Players that played last year, and walkons are now off the roster, hoping this is just an oversight. :( :( :( However, added are some of our Wash. St. Players like Zach Bruce, DB, University High, 12, Frank Cange, DB, Renton, Lindbergh HS. 10, Gaven Deyarmin, LB, Central Valley HS 12, Sefan Green LB, Mongtesano, HS, 12, Alex Pond, TE, Colville HS, 12, Larren Wright Jr., Kent Meridian HS, 10. He was here last year, I lost him in the shuffle ;) . If I am not mistaking, we now have 83 Players on the roster, with Sept, when our Recruits should be on their way out.
Here is hoping Props,Benjamin Gossmeyer DL, and Jalen Rogers,(?) RB from Clifornia, will be ready by Sept.

David Gaylord, DL/LB is missing from roster. Maybe problems with his back from last year raised its ugly head. Great young man, if he is not playing anymore, wish him the best of luck, glad to have know him.
Anthony Larry, DL, is back on the roster, hope he continue his progress in classes, he is a Senior this year, with Jerry Ceja gone, we could really use him. Of course we will have an outstanding group of men from last year that didn't get an opportunity to play, I am sure they will be ready. Don't forget, Thursday April 4th, @ 4pm, no pads practice. Hope to see many of you there, I will be there bad knees and all ;) Good Morning. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Hey Vic, Good to hear from you. For that matter, good to hear from anyone concerning Eagle football. It has been awfully quite here.
With the loss of Bowe Merin last year and the early departure of Padron that leaves us thin at QB. Looks like we only have two, Vito and Adams. Any rumors of anyone else in the wings?
Do you know if the loss of Gaylord frees up any scholarship? Did Frieze make it on the field last year or was he a red shirt.
Those are the name I can tell are missing, any others I am missing?

It has been VERY quiet on the boards, but that's not unusual for the off-season. Things will start picking up again once Spring Ball starts.

clawman,
Freise, did make it on the field last year, he even caught a TD in one of the scrimmages. Don't know if he just didn't feel like playing FB anymore, I enjoyed seeing him on the field. Someone in his family did make some special recognition a few years ago. Eagle 1, thanks for the help. Don't know if David Gaylord was on Scholarship. Jordan West is going to be a great QB, saw him a few times last year, and he can wing that ball, with accuracy. Come Thursday, we will see who is out there. Can't wait. Vic Wallace

clawman,
As of now no loses that I have heard. Normally we lose someone after the season, going into Spring. I guess some of the young men get burned out from training, figure FB is not for them. Lets hope we doesn't lose anyone. We will know next Thursday @ 4pm. Could lose one or two into the season. Hope not. Vic Wallace
