Spring Game This Saturday

For starters, who's coming? Count me in. Should be fun and exciting to have it in the stadium. Hopefully the weather stays away for the game and the bbq after, cross our fingers on that. I heard we are down a few o-lineman, and it might impact the game situations for 11 on 11. I hope not. I want to see what we have here, on both sides of the ball! Looks like Baca has the 'rock' at qb for now. I really want to see the others guys too.

Will they sell beer at the game? lol. Fight on to victory bears! The future is now at UNC!

I'll be there! Are you certain they'll have it at Nottingham??

I heard it's going to be at Nottingham also. Wouldn't be surprised to see them change it to the practice fields at the last minute though. I've got to believe with Peterson running the show now (so to speak) that he wants the game in Nottingham to simulate "game day" as much as possible.
It would be great to see a big crowd at the spring game. Any possibility that the students will show up too? Or, is that asking too much?

So is Baca really running first team at QB? I'd be interested to hear more about that.

i think will have more to talk about on that sat pm. i also believe that qb is still wide open, and, will be thru week 1 with adams st. i think we will still be 'finding' ourselves and it will take real 'game' situations to see who can lead us to the promise land. these are good problems to have with a young team and new coaches. we are laying a foundation for future success. we have some good athletes on roster that can compete at this level. we need to continue to get bigger, stronger and please, stay healthier!!!!

FIght on to victory UNC Bears!

Thanks for info.

I dragged myself all over the site and missed the 11 a.m. start. I was figuring sleep in and show up at 1 p.m. so glad you had the answer.

Defense looked very fast and were flying around the field! Only bright spot I saw on offene was the passing by the QBS. They threw with accuracy in a crowd! Go Bears!

This year's defense reminds me of the Montana St. defense that was all over our offense last season. They're fast and were in the backfield disrupting plays and causing turnovers. IMO, this defense will be among the best, if not the best in the BS this year. They are big, fast and physical.
The offense seemed sluggish at times and it may have had something to do with the offensive line having to take so many reps during practice because of depleted numbers. I also think the running backs, one in particular, don't hit the holes as quickly and hard as they should. This needs to change if the Bears are going to be a run heavy offense. The receivers on the whole looked good and were productive. The tight-ends need to consistently hang onto the ball in traffic.
It needs to be kept in mind that the defense is usually ahead of the offense at this time of year and they know the offensive plays because they been practicing against them for the past month. The snap count is also on two too much and needs to be varied.
The offense is still learning the new system and it will take more time for it to become routine. I do like it that the offense is under center in short yardage and goal line situations. We just need a strong back that can pick up the tough short yards on a consistant basis.

I like your optimism, but it is possible that our o-line sucks again.

i really enjoyed the atmosphere saturday! having it in nottingham was a huge success. alot of alumni, family, and fans made the trek. it showed the players and coaches how many really do care about our program, and the future of it. weather was a lil' tough at first, but it sure turned into a nice day in nocol!

deffense really looked good flying around the field, i am worried that we maybe 'fly' too much, and, in real games and might get burned. d-line was the most improved group on the field, and thats a good thing! they should help let everyone behind them get to the ball in a hurry. they have a swagger to them that you can't help but like. i hope we can be the dominant force we 'want' to be on d.

i really was not that impressed with baca at qb. he looks very 'robatic' and not that fluid, smoothness your qb needs to be. his body language needs to be better too, on and off the field. orms did much better than i thought he would with the new style of offense. he threw pretty well for a guy not known for his arm. his reads were pretty good and he put the ball in some tight quarters more than once. he appears to still want to run when things get 'hot' in the pocket. deen was the most impressive of the three. even with the limited snaps he got. those 2 long balls he threw were money! he appears to have great field pressence, arm strength and that 'it' thing your qb needs to be a leader. i would have liked to see him get a few more snaps. but, he is the new guy on the block and it will have to be earned.

all the hand position guys look pretty good too. wr's did a fine job. morris looks to be a good recruit with a bright future ahead of him. he got wacked pretty hard a few times and got right up and ready for the next play. te steele looked good cathing that one long ball from deen. he looks really solid at the position. and big too! rb's did well as a unit. a little slow to start, but they all have something to offer. and thats a good thing. no apperent front runner to start there from what i saw, they're all good. fb's need some work, but not bad for a first showing.

the o-line did very well all day after a slow start. they were short handed but coach bedell sems to have them ready to play more aggresive than past years for sure. with the new kids coming in, and 1 more coming back, we should only get better down in the trenches.....

one last note, got to talk to a.d jay for the first time. he seems really concerned about the future of the football program. he 'really' wants to get the right kids in see the succeed. having read alot about him, i enjoyed my conversation with him. there we baseball, softball and something else going on. and he chose to stay over at nottingham until the end.

i'm really excited about the future of the football pragram after saturday! go bears! fight on to victory!

"I like your optimism, but it is possible that our o-line sucks again."[/quote]

I don't think our o-line sucks. There are linemen playing new positions this year. McGraw was switched back to center with Shapiro moving to right guard. Gumbs has been moved from left tackle to left guard although he still gets some work at the tackle position. Candler appears to be no. 1 at left tackle and is still learning the position. In fact, all the linemen are learning their responsibilities in the new offense.
Don't forget, the defense is basically playing the same defense from last year. There is a little more pre-snap shifting that they are doing but it's pretty much the same D. And like I said previously, they know the offense and pretty much know what's coming. During the spring game they were in the backfield a lot but they were also blitzing a lot from all different positions. It will take the o-line a while to identify where the blitz is coming from and to be able to pick it up. What I was a little disappointed about is that there didn't seem to be a hot receiver out of the backfield when they knew the blitz was coming so the ball could be dumped off.
When August practice begins there will be more o-linemen in camp and one or two might be ready to play. There's a big guy coming in from AZ and another who's a JC transfer. They may be able to step up and in during the season.
There's also the possibility that Schwindt may be able to help too.
All in all, I think this is going to be a good and strong unit. They have more size this year and they just need to realize how good they can be and go out and do it. I don't think Bedell will settle for anything less.

Do you mean he expects Downing to have a certain number of wins this year, or else?

I wish! But after two seasons of thinking Downing had to display some life to keep his job, I don't expect much. If Jay were so concerned about the future of the football program, he would send Downing packing IMHO...
