Here are some thoughts from the game.

First off. I really wish that they'd used a offense versus defense point system for scoring. We used to use that in the past and it's pretty neat to see how the defense scores. There were enough sacks, stops, and turnovers to keep it close.

Did anyone see Urrego punting at halftime? Wow. He was nailing 60 yard tight spiral punts over and over again. Yeah, he had the wind at his back, but he really looked good.

Offense: Wow, pretty bad. Yeah, I realize that we're short handed on the o line, but how many sacks were given up? How many bad or fumbled snaps were there? There was major confusion on routes being ran and some poorly thrown balls. Howland and Hubel didn't look good, and both Collins and Kavanaugh performed better. Kavanaugh looked really quick when he got out of the pocket and got going. Much quicker than I thought. I can tell you this. He will get hit hard, and I wonder how he'll take the bit hits. That TD where he went up in the air to score would have been a massive hit on him that he probably would not have gotten up from. He had a big rooting section in front of us that looked like they were family, and they were loving it. I must admit, I was too. The local kid was looking good out there today. One big downside is the two passed that were batted down at the line. His height will be an issue. However, if you can get this kid out of the pocket, he clearly shows that good things can happen. At fullback, we need Bobby. 5.8 190 isn't going to get it done.

Defense: Not bad for having so many guys out. Our front seven is going to be a real asset this year. Strong, quick, and deep. If we can avoid injury, our corner situation will be just fine. I really wanted to see more Jones at corner in the second half. How will he do if he goes both ways and starts to get tired from the huge amount of plays that he may see. Also, that holding crap can't continue. Not sure why he did that in the first quarter, but it was obvious.

Kicking: Ugh. Punting should be good.

Some random comments:

- Hitting a 5'6" receiver at 25-30 yards would be tough for Joe Montana. These small slot guys are going to be tough to hit for big gain plays. We are undersized at receiver.

- Please let Scott Stone stay healthy the entire season.

- If Dallas Smith hits like he did today, he'll see a lot of downs.

- Give me more Reggie Jones. The hair, the swagger, the trash talk. This guy is talented and can make a difference on both sides of the ball.

The NCAA took a lot out of me. I'm back in football mode. :-)

Portland State football Glanville foresees working vacation
The Vikings coach finds bright spots on defense but, "Offensively, we struggled"

How did Jones look? He's supposed to be our new star, yet the PSU blog and the goviks.com summary didn't even mention him.

For one, he's easy to spot with the longest hair on the team. :-) With the rotations of a spring game, it was easy to keep track of him. He had a holding call on him early in the game when playing corner. I'm not sure why he held, as he was step for step with his guy. Other than the penalty, I think he looked good at corner.

On offense, I think he had two catches. One he nearly dropped, but the other, he had some good yards after the catch. That play made think that he could really be a weapon when the corners are playing about 6 or 7 yards off of the ball. He is quick and strong enough to turn a quick pass into a 7 to 8 yard gain. 2nd and 3rd and short situations can really open things up.

Defensively the defensive line looks good. I'm excited to see what John Shackford is going to contribute once he gets 100%. What about that # 56?? Didn't they move him to outside linebacker? Whatever the case, he opened a lot of eyes on saturday. Hope we can see more of him...

Are you talking about Johnathan B-N (#56)? He's tough out there.

Did anyone see the big 6'5' kid in the gray sweats catching passes on the field before the game? That was Spencer Hagan, Kramer Hagan's younger brother. Glanville and Mouse offered him on friday and are hoping he will choose to play with his brother over bigger offers. PSU needs a combination of quick slot guys and a big like Spencer to make this thing work.

Was it the kid in the Cal sweatshirt?

Looks like Jerry and Mouse are jumping on this kid quick from superprep.com:

Hagan's First Offer Has Familiar Ring
Sacramento (Calif.) Capital Christian receiver Spencer Hagan received his first offer this week, and it came from the school who signed his brother in February...

A year ago, Sacramento (Calif.) Capital Christian quarterback Kramer Hagan committed to Portland State, and signed with them in February.

The Vikings coaches also saw plenty of Hagan's younger brother, Spencer Hagan, a receiver for Capital Christian. This week, the Portland State coaches made their first attempt to reunite Spencer and Kramer.

"(Coach) Jerry Glanville and Mouse Davis just gave Spencer a written offer," said their father, Scott. "They know he is getting a lot of interest from Pac-10 schools but are trying to get in his head and heart early to play with his brother."

The idea of the Hagan's playing together in college isn't far-fetched.

"Spencer is taking this offer serious," said Scott Hagan. "But we will see how everyhing plays out this summer."

And Davis' pass-happy offense is expected to be the norm in the Rose City. "Coach Davis told him that Portland State will be throwing the ball more than any school in the country," said Scott. "Only SMU with June jones will throw as much."

Numerous other schools are showing interest in Hagan as well, including Washington and Washington State, Cal and UCLA.

During the 2007 season, Hagan had 52 catches for 928 yards and helped Capital Christian to the CIF-Sac Joaquin Section championship game.

Academically, Hagan has a 3.5 GPA and scored a 1500 on the SAT as a sophomore.

Yes! man..what a motor! He has been apart of the program for quiet some time, came in 2004 under Tim Walsh, he's definitely tough.

I just checked the rivals and scout sites and Spencer Hagan is listed at 6'4' not 6'5' . I will still take him. The story said he was just 17. I know they were just screwing around before the game but in over ten minutes he never dropped a football. At least in sweats he looked very smooth and graceful.

Punter/kicker Danny Urrego may play wide receiver next season

I'm not a big fan of Urrego playing receiver.

He should be one of the best (if not the best) punters in the Big Sky this season. I realize that he's quite an athlete, but him taking snaps at receiver will greatly increase the chance of him getting hurt. Not sure if you guys saw the other punters kicking at halftime, but other than Urrego's kicks, it looked pretty bad.

How about focusing Urrego's talents on kickoffs? Not sure if Chalmers or Urrego will be doing kickoffs, but does anyone else remember that extreme buzzkill to start the UC Davis game last year, but let me give you a hint, it involved our kickoff going out of bounds like two or three times in a row.

Oh yeah, aren't out of bounds kicks this year an automatic placement at the 40 yardline with the NCAA rule change?

Coaches, have your kickers focus on kicking.

I'd like to second the motion. The last thing we need is an injury to our punter, especially since we don't know if our wide receivers will allow the offense to move the ball.
