Spring Game Tickets

Free admission to the spring game (or the season opener at OSU) for those that purchased the three-year season ticket package.

Two weeks away, and if the lack of comments here, no people I've heard actually talking about this, and the zero comments after the oregonlive article announcing the game are any indication, I'm guessing the crowd isn't going to be huge. With the prices being steeper than normal (which I thought were usually free), I wouldn't be surprised to see a smaller crowd than their average spring game. I can only hope that Hersh's group has some magical plan that will be put into place in the coming weeks.... If not, is a game with guys, most of them in their upper 50's, really going to generate a buzz for PSU football?

I met a linebacker from Century HS on a walk around the neighborhood. He told me that they have heard nothing about the NFL Legends event appearing at Hillsboro Stadium, their field for home games!

I believe the first group that needs to be notified are the HS coaches and their teams on the West Side, and then all the other Metro Area HS coaches and their teams. They'll most likely spread the word and help infuse the event with the excitement it deserves. This would constitute negligent marketing if they were not notified and brought up to speed and the excitement level the Legends' appearance truly warrants and would customarily summon forth.

There is no anticipatory excitement ("sizzle") in the air right now. Things have fallen flat on to deaf ears. It is as if none of us truly believes they are coming or grasp emotionally the deserved import this upcoming event normally commands. It is as if the legendary players will arrive (and depart) under the radar. What in blazes is going on here?

The best advertising, I feel, would be a flurry of excitement-producing announcements faxed to each and every HS coach in the Metro Area (including SW Washington). Don't tell them who is sponsoring this event until AFTER the event has finished successfully. Then, PSU will gain some street cred. Right now, just promote the Legends' game.

This event needs to REALIZED in and to its full measure. If it is not, and only a scattered few attend, it is not a victory for the few who attend, but would rather constitute a simple failure to pass along the word in full.

High schoolers talk to other high schoolers. Generally.

You're asking them to fork over $60 a head. Um, good luck with that.

Hersh gave up on growing anything.

Oughtn't we to be positive and forth right? Do you know anything as to what's taking place behind the scenes or are you just Umming?

Yes, HS players also talk to families, friends and neighbors. Quite a few could afford this event at $60. Have you seen the price of concert tickets lately? And what do you mean Hersh gave up trying to grow anything? Did he go back to Philadelphia or something, or are you just Umming?

Negative developments being met with positive responses in 2014 makes the positive one look foolish.

Who needs to be behind the scenes here? When you price THIS ticket at $60, your strategy is basically to hit the people who are already buying tickets. Hockey sometimes works that way. Sure as the May rain, this strategy grows nothing.

I'm not so sure that high school kids are going to care about retired NFL players. Some of them played before today's high school kids were even alive. I have to admit I'm lost as to what population they're targeting.

Hopefully they get the word out in the last 10 days. Gotta say I like the Lomax commercial on the GoViks website. I hope they buy some media space so someone actually sees it.

I hope they sell out the stadium. Not likely considering the lack of buzz and late marketing but every dime counts so still keeping my fingers crossed (hard as hell to type this way btw)

They should have done a family price, mom dad and a couple of kids for $75. Parents spend another $50 on food and drinks and you've gotten a good chunk of change from the family. You've exposed the family to PSU football and maybe gained a fan. I'm sure the cost of flying in these old timers, putting them up in the hotel and feeding them is expensive, but unless they are selling these tickets to corporate clients, it's unlikely that the average fan of the team will go.

Pounder, we need to make the best of what we have. You're saying it's not being handle well. I know you care, so, okay I, for one, want to hear from what you recommend as to what CAN be done? What do you suggest be done to get the biggest bang-for-the buck? The most economical gain from our current monetary fuel supply.

I, for one, believe in Mitch Greenlick's idea of building serious prestige value through merger between PSU and OHSU (actually OHSU and OGI). I believe that would give us the clout needed to near-instantly be on par with the Valley Youse. There would be gaps to fill to shore up missing elements, but then Oregon would have its THIRD(truly) major university. Helps PSU's evolution and Oregon's image simultaneously. I believe in this "If you build it, they will come" strategy.

Portland Metro is where the conglomerate of small business money is. It is also where large organizations that find Portland a mandate city in which to have a presence. I believe even Nike, Columbia Sportswear and others would find it difficult to resist supporting the new hybrid university. I would love to see the new hybrid institution named the Oregon Institute (and its graduate school named the Oregon Graduate Institute) ... of Science, Technology and the Arts.

I agree that the HS kids today have no real connection to great players of the (seemingly recent) past. They probably have no idea who Roger Craig is. It would be like us going to an event with Otto Graham and Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch in our day. I just think the HS kids would work wonders in spreading the word to those who have the mullah. It is their enthusiasm which would be infectious.

Logistical issues = No tickets sold.

I actually think the idea of having it before the October 4th game is a good idea. This should have been the first plan. Having Shead and Thomas for the spring game is another good idea.

Well, my plan of getting free spring game tickets instead of free nose bleed seats for the the OSU game (I'm going, but I always buy seats with a decent view) sure backfired.

I wonder if the PSU athletic department will just send out the OSU tickets to season ticket holders. I received a call prior to the cancellation of the Legends Game asking which tickets I wanted.

The first basic rule, and this is ten times as true in Oregon as in most states, is give the kids something better to sell than a $60 old farts game just to get people to also watch the Spring game. BTW, it's not really the old farts, it's not really the spring game, but add that together and charge $60 and you have problems. PEOPLE HERE ARE TOO SMART FOR THAT. So wouldn't you know it, that whole thing failed.

Now I'm wondering if they'll charge $60 a shot for October 4.

Dave Hersh... I wonder if the termination cause in the contract with his firm is too much of an obstacle. He's remembering promotions in minor league baseball that have happened since he was in Portland, but he doesn't realize that, oh, say, the Winterhawks already ran an AYCE section. Also, they discarded it after a couple years. That + ticket prices = a strategy of attempting to create the "value added" effect. Problem is, people get that everywhere else for practically everything else these days. One can only afford so much value-added in one's personal economy. People here want just value. Of course, that runs counter to the trends required to stay in Division 1.

Could a $10 entry and a signature fee for getting the autographs of old timers have worked (with the alums among them donating it to the school)? Then you have people at least trying to get their mental calculators working. October 4 had better be regular price and that strategy or else it will backfire. However, I think it's more likely this got kicked down the road to eventually be dumped.

The tickets weren't all priced at $60. They were a range from $29 to $69 a ticket, with military getting a pretty good discount. http://www.goviks.com/sports/2014/4/30/athmarket_0430140531.aspx Still WAY too much, in my opinion, to see an old guy flag football game and a spring game that is usually free. I'm just guessing here, but flying in all these guys who have no ties to PSU can't be cheap, and is the cost of it really going to be worth it with how many extra fans it attracts? Doesn't seem to help reach the self-sufficiency that they are somehow going to attain.

That was exactly what I was thinking.
