First practice is March 14 and the spring game is April 14

Excited to see which of the QBs steps up. Wish they were all enrolled early so we could evaluate all eight or nine of them.

At least one of those guys is going on a mission. Aside from that, I think only one of these guys is an upper classman. Yes, our coaches will have a lot of guys to choose from. That is a good thing. Whoever wins the job, they are going to be good. There should be at least 4 or 5 of them in spring ball.

To me, it will be more interesting to see what happens this summer with the incoming players. Some of those guys are going to contribute right out of the gait. Also interesting is what the new OC will bring to the program. :coffee:

Not sure how accurate the current roster is, but the following non-seniors were on the 2017 roster and are not on the current roster:

WR Spencer Curtis - 2017 Redshirt Freshman, signed in spring of 2017, Mission?
WR De'Shawn Eagles - 2017 Did not play, walk-on in summer of 2017
CB Kier Gibson-Adams - 2017 Did not play, walk-on in summer of 2017
S Luke Latteier - Played in 3 games in 2017 as a Soph and in 4 games in 2016 as a Fr, former walk-on and RM
WR Ty MacPherson - Played in 13 games in 2017 as a Fr, signed in spring of 2017, Mission?
OL Carter Nielson - 2017 Did not play, signed in spring of 2015, RM

Also, Darryl Denby is on the current roster, so I'm assuming he got a medical red shirt.

I hope so, that would be awesome for him and for the team.

Missionaries
Spencer Curtis
Ty MacPherson

No idea on the others... Nobody has reported a medical hardship received for Denby yet.

Just came from the first practice, not much of note.

QB position featured 3 players, Jenks, Miles, and Ricedorff.
QB1 - Jenks
QB2 - Miles
QB3 - Ricedorff
Hymas was walking stairs, Shaw may also have been on the stairs. I didn't notice any other QBs. Not sure if this is representative of a depth chart or just how they were assigned for today's practice.

I didn't get a chance to see who was running with the ones at other positions.

Defense appeared to be slightly ahead of the offense in the brief scrimmages I watched.

Not sure it was really open to the public, but the coaches didn't run me off either. Gonna try and slide over there as time allows during spring practice.

Thanks for the report. :thumb:

Here is Coach Hill talking after today's practice:

I really like the honesty and quiet confidence of coach Hill. He tells it like it is but doesn't make it sound like the roof is falling in. I think that was the most confidence I have observed coach have since arriving on campus. :thumb: :thumb:

Olds, you are stating this as a fact, have you been to the coaches meetings and practices? Or are you just watching twitter and youtube clips?

I agree. He isn't one to mince words and tells it how it is. But, like you observed, he seems far more comfortable.

Some players changing positions.

Looks like they moved Shaw to clear the deck a bit at QB. Prince is likely in a logjam at WR come fall camp as well. Hopefully he fits in well on defense. Lloyd was on the roster last year. Just wasn't going to punt ahead of Demaio

Online roster is already updated. That is a positive.

IMHO, I feel that there are 4 or 5 guys coming in this summer who can also have an impact on the 2 deep, when all is said and done. It looked like a very good recruiting class to me.

Watched another session of practice today.

Jenks, Miles, and Ricedorff were the 3 featured QBs again. None of them seemed to set themselves apart form the other two. Jenks looks more phyisically imposing, Miles had a little more polish at times, Ricedorff seems to love the long pass but didn't connect on many throws.

Denby is definitely playing spring ball, so I presume he received a medical hardship year.

Defense still looks a bit ahead of the offense.

The new punter looks pretty good as well.

Why isn't Jacob Whitmer on the roster any longer?

Honestly the roster isn't accurate. I was seeing names on the field from previous recruiting classes that were also not on the roster. Many of the new recruits are on the roster, but not many of them are at spring ball.

I hope this roster isnt accurate. Notables that are missing: Landon Stice, Baron Bruce, and Jacob Whitmer.

I know Bruce was injured end of the year, hopefully it wasnt career ending. We need a senior Stice back. Why are we losing quality LB's each year? Stice, Liljenquist, Tela, etc.

Well, Alema Key is still on the roster and he is definitely done with eligibility. Maybe whoever updates the roster messed up and accidentally erased Stice but kept Key? I don't know why Stice would leave with a year to go. Maybe his body is done? Who knows... Personally, I think it was a roster error.

I think Bruce is done. He had a pretty gnarly injury to end the season last year and when it happened, I heard it was most likely career ending. Regardless, Bruce is a hell of a player and is a key player responsible for the Wildcat's resurgence.

Whitmer was on the roster earlier. I'm guessing he isn't coming to Weber State now. Maybe it had something to do with the change in OCs? I'm totally guessing. Along with Whitmer not being on the roster any longer, Mason Tye was moved from TE to DL. What once was the deepest TE corp in the Sky, is now a little thin. Yet, maybe one of the guys playing TE will totally surprise us or coach has something up his sleeve. I'm not overly concerned. We were all worried with Tela leaving and Weber ended up having the best team in school history. Yes, Tela would have made the team that much better, but it didn't lessen what they accomplished.

This is just my opinion. The tight end position is a hybrid between an offensive lineman and a receiver. I have seen teams that did not have true tight ends, but did it by committee. You can be effective using your better blockers mostly on run plays, while using your better receivers on most passing plays. You tip your hand a little by showing your opponent your tendencies, but that can be used against them as well. I don't think we have to have an every down tight end. We were spoiled a little bit with the two tight ends we had the last two years. :coffee:
