Spring recruits

In-n-Out

JC Jordan Salley 6'6" PF has committed. Some may remember he was a former Montana State signee In 2010 who couldn't qualify last minute. I may be mistaken, but I think he was even enrolled at MSU.

Seems like a solid get... do you have any confirmation for the commitment (twitter, article, etc?)... I haven't heard of anyone else committing yet.

Seems like they should have 3 scholarships available (Walter Jackson, Heath Hoffman, Josh McCarver)... does it look the same to you?

Welcome to the board In-n-Out. Looks like Salley is a good get and definitely fills a void on our roster.

Jon, I think we have/had at least 4/5 scholarships available heading into this offseason. Add to your list Alpha and Cosentino; both left last off season for one reason or another. Salley's addition means 2 of the available scholarships have been used.

That's right, I forgot about those two.

Demps and Salley look like a nice start to recruiting. Hopefully they can get a couple more... depending on if Demps can play PG, they could use someone to back up Garrity. Another shooter too... Eberhard is solid from long-range, but their next best guy was Hoffman who is gone obviously.

It will help too if Garrity would add a little more consistent outside shot to his repertoire. If he is able to do that, he could definitely be an all-conference type player.

I think big men will be the theme of this class. We need a capable backup center behind Veteto and depth behind Dickson (which sounds like what has been added). Garrity, Carbajal, and especially Estrada will need to step up along side Eberhard to fill the 3-ball threat Hoffman provided last season.

Official Cody Demps announcement:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s basketball program announced its first signee of the 2012-13 recruiting class with the inking of local product Cody Demps of Elk Grove’s Pleasant Grove High School. Demps will enroll as a freshman at Sacramento State in the fall of 2012.

A 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard from Elk Grove, Demps was a three-year starter for the Eagles. A two-sport athlete at Pleasant Grove, Demps was named to ESPN’s Cal-Hi Sports Grid-Hoop (basketball and football) first team all-state squad after leading the Eagles to the 2012 Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I basketball semifinals, and quarterbacking the football team to the section championship game.

What a huge coup IMO to get Demps! Nice job to the coaching staff!!

His Jr. year FOOTBALL highlight film on Youtube is very impressive! I think he and Kyi Thomas should play two sports this year.

3rd recruit known (2nd official release from Hornetsports), a transfer who has 3 years of eligibility left:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz announced the program’s second signee of the 2012-13 recruiting class with the inking of guard Mikh McKinney of Ohlone College. McKinney will enroll as a sophomore at the University this fall and have three years of eligibility remaining.

A 6-foot-1, 165-pound guard from Union City, Calif., McKinney spent two years at Fremont’s Ohlone College, redshirting in 2010-11, and playing his freshman season in 2011-12. As a freshman, he was a first team all-state and first team all-Coast Conference selection after averaging 14.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 53.0 percent (123-232) from the field, 40.9 percent (18-44) from the three-point line and 80.0 percent (100-125) from free throw line.

4th recruit announced and official announcement for Salley. Katz added some depth behind Veteto with another big man.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s basketball program announced its third and fourth signees of the 2012-13 recruiting class with the inking of Santa Rosa Junior College’s Jordan Salley and New Mexico Junior College’s Ryan Okwudibonye. Both will enroll as juniors at Sacramento State in the fall of 2012.

I really like the Salley signing. He can play a role right away for this team backing up the 4 and possibly the 5. If he had not been plagued by knee injuries he would have been a lot more highly touted. This will be his second year off of his last knee injury which is usually the time it takes to fully recover. This could be a sneaky good get by the Hornets.

Salley looks solid for sure. I am unsure Okwudibonye will have too big of a role (4.6 PPG and 43% shooting in JUCO), but he should provide some nice defensive depth in the frontcourt. Like they say, you can always use more big men.

I haven’t had much time to look into the recruits but Okwudibonye just seems like a body at this point...but then again I initially felt that way about Eberhard and I couldn’t have been more wrong. He should see significant time backing Veteto. Even if he isn't a scoring threat, hopefully he can make up for it on the defensive end.

Okwudibonye I think will be asked to defend and rebound...I think he can provide depth on the frontline and maybe with a little seasoning become mccarver 2.0

I agree...and welcome to Sac Buzz PnS! :thumb:

Hornets just signed Dreon Bartlett! Bartlett is a strong wing player who played a season at Edison with Dylan Garrity. I think that their familiarity with one another will help ensure a smooth transition for Dreon. This is becoming a recruiting class for Hornets fans to get excited about! It has balance with 2 freshman, 2 juniors, and a sophomore, but most importantly this class has talent.

But no height.

Looks to be the stud of the recruiting class (as Garrity was last year)...

Looks like the last player considering us is 6'9" C Jake Johnson from Reno, NV. Not likely we'll land him. He's also considering UNR, UM, WEB, and NAU.

Looks to be another solid add by Katz. Anyone know how many schollies are left for use? Does Barlett round out the class? :?:
