Spring Signing

I expected a little activity this morning. However, things have been quiet. The silence is deafening.

The only tidbit I got was Garrett Kingman committing to UI. The only thing I know about Garrett is that he is from Gig Harbor, Washington and that he wasn't on anybody's radar. UI must have had to turn over a lot of rocks to find this kid. I hope he works out up north.

Not a peep out of any other BSC school, including WSU.

Spring signing has become a non-event. This seems to be a nationwide thing. :coffee:

Shoulddn't Ary-Turner be officially signing soon? Isn't he just a verbal commit at this point?

Agreed...

However, I'm guessing that Ary-Turner sent in his LOI, or will soon, and we are sitting on it. I'm not too concerned. Randy has done this in the past. He is probably waiting for the other guy we are waiting on (whomever that might be, heard we are close) to sign a LOI before the university publishes any information on the Spring signees.

Idaho State signed two, Sam Dowd a 5-5 PG from North Idaho JC (18 points and 7 assists per game) and Jake McCord, a 6-7 PF who was the NWAC player of the year, averaging 26 points and 12 rebounds a game at Big Bend JC.

From all I've read about Dowd, he's the anti-Telfair when it comes to character. He was homeless in high school until a family took him in and he played at Gonzaga Prep. At NIC one of the assistants was badly injured in a car accident on a recruiting trip and the head coach stayed at the hospital for weeks, so Dowd and another player ran practice during that time. The tweet he issued today upon signing with ISU was humble and thankful. He's short but powerfully built and I'm looking forward to watching him play. I think he will quickly become a fan favorite.

McCord, by numbers alone, is probably the most productive recruit ISU has signed in a long time. The NWAC is not a great JC league, but McCord was so consistently productive -- he was held under double figures in scoring only once this season and he had double figure rebounds 20 times. He'll make a nice complement at the 4 to Novak Topalovic.

I think ISU has one more scholarship to give and I'm expecting another JC player. I know ISU will likely be picked to finish last in the pre-season polls, but with Topalovic, Luzcando, Boyd and Chevechyian coming back and with these two additions, I think they have a chance to be more competitive this season.

ISU got a 5'5'' point guard out of a JC.

SUU is still in the running for a 3 star, 5'3'' point guard. He looks pretty good. I hope they get him. He looks like a Muggsy mini me.

Both schools are inflating their heights to make them look a bit bigger.

NAU signed a 6'10'' post player. :shocking:

I expect that we will see a number of new signings, but they will probably trickle in. :coffee:

I also think that ISU will be much improved next year. You have the pieces to make a run at things. The BSC, as a whole, should be better next year. UND get's most everyone back, UM has added some inside talent, MSU has added some size to a good returning bunch, UNC has added a talented big man and has some good returning talent, and we have added additional inside talent and depth. There are still a lot of unknowns, but the league does look better.

It's going to be interesting to see how the two new coaches impact the BSC.

Bengal, did Ingram get a medical waiver? To me, a consistent inside presence was the biggest thing missing for the Bengals. Well, that and chemistry. Ingram isn't the most amazing player, but he is consistent and tough. He plays hard and is a decent rebounding and scoring big. If he is coming back, then I'm thinking ISU could have a change of fortunes from this past season.

As for the two guys being signed. McCord originally played at Dixie St. and left after a year. He is being rewarded with a DI Scholarship, which, to me, is a definite plus for the kid. But, like you said, the league he is coming from isn't the greatest. It is one of the lowest ranked out of all JC. Yet, he is the player of the year. That tells me he has skill. However, on the flip side a kid coming from Northern Idaho who averaged 18 and 7 is fairly substantial. He reminds me a lot of Kellen McCoy, but shorter. :)

The reason I like both of these signings for ISU is that rebounds and assists translate as a player moves up. Scoring and defending tend to slide a bit, but those two things translate well. Out of the gate, ISU should be a better rebounding team and a better passing team. If they can figure out defending, they should get more wins. :thumb: :thumb:

I don't believe Ingram needed a waiver since he still had a redshirt year available. The question with him was if he would leave as a graduate transfer. Haven't heard anything one way or the other on that.

UI has signed the unknown guy I mentioned earlier, and also a talented 6'3'' off guard. The SG looks like a good talent.

The silence from our program is deafening. In fact, the silence from a lot of programs is deafening. It's like everyone is waiting on their #1 and once things start falling into place the momentum will pick up. Sometimes the choices, by one or two players at a high level, are holding up many other choices down the line. The thing that some of these high ranking guys need to understand is that if they were truly the #1 guy at the school they want, they would have papers in front of them on the first day of signing. If that didn't happen, they are not that teams first choice. If a coach is telling them to hold on for a few days, they are lower on that coaches list. Do you really want to go some place where you are the 'sloppy second'. :coffee:

Big Sky schools get a lot of sloppy seconds -- and thirds. These kids want to play at the highest level they can and I don't blame them. BSC schools are typically at the bottom of the barrel, with the exception of Weber and Montana. I was pleased to see ISU wrap up its recruiting so early this year, with Blake Thurman of Snow signing today. We are usually looking at kids well into the summer.

I couldn't find anything on Blake Thurman. What can you tell us about him?

It's Blake Truman that I found on their roster. 6'8'', 230. He looks solid. 12.7 PPG 7.6 RPG in 25 minutes per game. ISU will be much stronger on the inside next year.

Trevon signed today.

I predict big things from this talented young man. He can play point or either wing position. He has a complete game and will be mature for a freshman.

Where have you been? Four of the five signed in the Fall (Court two years ago). We have known about these guys for quite some time. Only Ary-Turner committed in the Spring and we've known about him since January.

We are all waiting on the last one.

All verbal commits in the "early signing period" then. Nothing official until announced by the university this week. :coffee:

Nelson, Kozak, and Vialen all signed in the fall, and the University announced it then. Not sure why they think they need to announce it again.

Maybe there won't be a last one. Why would they make an announcement on signings if they were still waiting for another to sign?
