COACHING STAFF CHANGES, POSITION MOVES HIGHLIGHT START OF FOOTBALL SPRING BALL

4/9/2010

The Sacramento State football held its first three practices of its 2010 spring ball. The spring practice marks the fourth year under head coach Marshall Sperbek. Below are a few notes heading into the spring season.

Same Faces, New Places
Despite having all but two coaches return from last season, several will serve in different capacities in 2010. On the offensive side of the ball, Klayton Adams shifts from tight ends/tackles coach to run the offensive line. Robbie Case, who was the team’s offensive graduate assistant in 2009, will take Adams’ old role leading the tight ends.

Fourth-year receivers coach Daniel DaPrato will take on the additional challenge of special teams coordinator and the team plans to hire a new graduate assistant. Aaron Ingram remains the running backs coach.

Defensively, Anthony Parker begins his first year as defensive coordinator. The Boise State graduate is in his second year with Sacramento State and served as the defensive backs/special teams coordinator a year ago.

Lou Baiz, the longest tenured member of the staff, returns to guide the linebackers. Jon Osterhout continues to be the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator and Steve Roberson coaches the secondary. The newest member of the staff is Greg Sasser who will serve as the defensive graduate assistant. Sasser starred as a linebacker at Boise State from 1998-2001.

Moving Day
The coaching staff was not the only part of the program that saw some movement during the winter. Several Hornets will be playing new positions beginning this spring, including a handful who are switching sides of the ball.

Most notably, Evander Wilkins will move from running back to defensive back. Wilkins has played each of the past two years but has been endured season-ending injuries in 2008 and 2009. The Sacramento native was granted a hardship waiver last season and will have two seasons left to play. Wilkins is expected to contend for the nickel back position with the defense.

Moving from defense to offense will be Salesi Maumau. Last season, Maumau saw action on the defensive line and on special teams. This spring, he will test his skills at tight end where he could lineup across from his brother Maika.

Other changes include David Coleman’s move to defensive end. Coleman came to the Hornets has a quarterback in 2007 and moved to defensive back that fall. He has played linebacker the last two seasons. Senior Jarred Pereira will also move with Coleman from linebacker to the defensive front.

How Do You Top That?
The last time McLeod Bethel-Thompson was in a Hornet uniform, he had just led the team to a come-from-behind 31-28 victory over UC Davis in the Causeway Classic. In that game, Bethel-Thompson came off the bench to start the second half and rallied the team behind a 19-for-29 performance for 233 yards and two touchdowns.

Following the season, Bethel-Thompson, who has already graduated, flirted with the idea of heading off the law school and giving up football. Instead, he opted to come back for his senior season and will work toward a graduate degree in the meantime.

The San Francisco native started a pair of games in 2009 and played in four others, finishing the season 64-for-110 for 746 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

During the spring, Bethel-Thompson will share snaps with junior college transfer Pete Murdaca and sophomore Dominic Carmazzi.

Look Who’s Back
One reason why Wilkins is now playing on defense is the return of Bryan Hilliard. The junior missed all of 2009 after having surgery on both shoulders. In his first two seasons with the team, Hilliard rushed for 1,905 yards and 19 touchdowns..

Also returning to the backfield this year will be junior Jake Croxdale and sophomore Sam McCowan. McCowan ranked second on the team with 344 rushing yards and four touchdowns while Croxdale compiled 199 yards and three scores.

Temporary Home
The installation of the new field turf will likely keep the team on the practice field for all of spring ball. The team will hold scrimmages on April 17 and 24 and the annual Green-Gold Game on May 1.

MBT almost left for law school. Glad he is back.

Looks like we are adding speed to the defense with Wilkins moving to DB, along with, officially, Parker as DC.

Do they ever proof-read these things before release? Multiple grammatical errors.

Speaking of grammar: how does Parker as DC, add speed to the defense? :)

 @ grammatical errors.

There was a lot of movement with regards to player positions, hopefully they all work out. It looks like a few of the LB's moved to the DL in an attempt to get quicker guys into a speed rushing role. (Only a guess here as Coleman is listed at 210 and Pereira at 240.) It will be interesting to see who wins the starting job at LB. I didn't know we were so close to loosing both returning QB's...that could have been a disaster.

Wilkins adds speed, Parker seems to use an attacking defense, last year we played prevent all year.

Yeah that's another thing I forgot to mention. I am glad the DC situation was officially announced so at least we know that much.

My observations of scrimmage this morning:

* Offensive line is improving and is BIG!
* Defensive line is really, really good
* CBs are playing 3-8 yards off the receivers not 12 yards like last year
* Defensive schemes seem more aggressive and first team defense looks formidable.
* Lots of nickel package
* MBT threw some great balls and looks very poised out there - he must stay healthy cuz there is a big drop-off after him.
* Croxdale is a stud!
* We look bigger, faster and stronger

Pretty spirited scrimmage and the guys look fired up for the most part, especially given this was an 8 am scrimmage. It will be interesting to compare with next week's scrimmage.

I think HHD hit pretty much all the right points. The defense is a lot more active and agressive, putting pressure on the quarterback and in the receivers faces at the line of scrimmage. The second unit on the O line is even bigger than the first unit and mostly RS freshman. Interesting to see David Coleman coming off the end. He's so much faster than anyone we've had there before and even though his size isn't typical of D end, he creates problems for tackles trying to catch up to him. Badger and Cody Allen are taking a lot of first unit snaps at the linebacker spots along with Peter Buck. Diniz looks great so far hitting everything.

As mentioned on the website it was a very lopsided scrimmage Saturday morning with the first team defense beating up the "O" and hardly allowing any first downs. As far as the defense goes it seems as though the first group is pretty solid and seemed to play with much more energy as expected compared to the 2nd. Christian Clark looked good playing end along with Nash playing the other spot. The two dt's also seemed to perform well especially in the run game. The lb's were able to get pressure on the qb along with making their run fits. Jeff Badger and Peter Buck started at the lb spots along with Evander and Kyle Monson playing the nickel ( 3rd linebacker) When the defense went into heavier defenses Greg Johnson came in as the real 3rd linebacker. The defensive backs all seemed to play pretty decent with Schrader standing out as normal.

As far as the offense MBT had nearly no time as the defense had pressure and sacks all day. The one high point seemed to be for the offense was Jake Croxdale. He seemed to run with much more purpose than Mcgown. They split reps pretty evenly so it seems to still be up in the air. Hilliard didnt play at all.

I've heard that Hilliard isn't even practicing at all this week. What's the skinny? Did he ding up one or both of his shoulders or what? I assume he won't play in Saturday's scrimmage.

Anyone got any information?

A brief Interview with Sperbeck was posted on HornetSports.com today, and he specifically spoke about Hilliard. Sounds like he's doing okay and they're just giving him some more time to heal.

"Q: In the first scrimmage, Sam McCowan and Jake Croxdale took all the reps at running back. How is Bryan Hilliard progressing?
A: He’s looking good. We are going to hold him out of all contact for the remainder of the spring because that is what is best for him."

Two shoulder surgeries...I'd hold him out until the fall too! Let them heal up and take the rehab slow. Glad to see we have a smart training staff and supportive coach who isn't rushing the process.

The offense looked better, the defense still looked good. A couple of DB’s were a little out of position but nothing a summer of 7 on 7 can’t fix. The O line looked like it’s coming together. Ends and flankers looked like receivers rather than retrievers. Schrader’s pick looked cool and did ya see how many blocks he got on the return. Let BHill heal up some more. This is coming together rather nicely.

It appears that David Born is not on the roster any longer. I've heard rumors that he's headed to a JC to try and improve his stock and maybe get another scholarship offer somewhere.

Terrible news. He isn't listed on the roster Hornetsports has linked. :?

That is bad news. Chi, I thought you recently reported that he was starting at left tackle for spring ball.

I'm gonna be honest, I was high on Born intially because of the recruiting buzz, but I heard through various people last season that he was VERY raw and stiff, not a natural athlete.

He was a monster because of his size, but was a project who might have taken several years to see the field. I've learned over the years that just because a guy gets a lot of buzz in high school does not mean much at the next level.

Lt. Dan: Great pics...thanks for posting them.

My comments on yesterday's spring game:

1. There were 2-3 times as many people out there as I've ever seen before and we weren't even in the stadium.
2. The defense looks very improved and we had 5 defensive starters who didn't even play yesterday because they were nicked up.
3. MBT and our group of receivers are going to be trouble for Big Sky defenses. Ron Richardson looks fantastic, Reed didn't participate and we are deep, deep, deep at WR.
4. Croxdale and McGowan are good backs, but with Hilliard and our two freshman guys, who are true gems, we will be in good shape.

With respect to the two guys who were removed from the team roster, I found out that Born decided to leave and go to a junior college because someone advised him he wouldn't have a great chance to get to the NFL if he stayed at Sac State. Pretty ballsy decision for a kid who's never played a single down of college football and wasn't even a first string guy after redshirting a year. He's been given very bad advice and I speculate it was some junior college coach who wanted him. I guess he's not heard about the four superbowl rings worn by Lonnie Paxton and John Gesek, nor that four out of five Hammerheads that started in 1999 were invited to NFL camps.

James Bobak, the Long Snapper/TE from Oakmont is a walk-on player who is working two jobs and he just couldn't meet the demands of school, two jobs and football. He was our starting long snapper and I understand he's been invited to come back in the fall to join the team, so I hope everything works out for him.

One thing that I noticed is that these guys look ripped and in great shape (check out Lt. Dan's pics closely and you'll see.) Also, I met a couple of the incoming freshmen parents (Todd Davis and Kyle Brooks) and they mentioned their sons are enrolling in June and attending summer school, so they can be in the summer conditioning program. That is great news that we can get everyone here for summer conditioning. By the way, Todd and Kyle's parents are very cool people and are so excited about Sac State.

I believe it will be a very exciting year for Sac State football. I'm not saying we'll beat Stanford, but they Big Sky Conference title is within sight and I'm looking forward to a three-peat against the Aggies.

GO HORNETS!!!!!!
