SSS: Katz Q&A

An interesting lineup of questions asked of Coach Katz by SSS's (ha, I knew I could find a way to get a 4th "s" in there) Bryan Metcalf:

Q: You’ve had a number of players leave the program in recent years. Is this a trend?

A: I can’t say anything about that, but in general just look at the NCAA transfer list. Thirty-eight percent of players transferred last year. It’s more of a comment about the nature of the business today. It’s a world of free agents.

Q: Walter Jackson was one of the players who left last year. Rumors have come out that there was more than initially reported.

A: There is zero truth to those rumors. I won’t discuss the details of Walter’s personal situation in public, but there is zero truth to the rumors.

Looks like somebody has been reading this board.

What rumors are they specifically talking about?

Didn't Walter ask for a leave of absence or something and rumor was Katz told him to hit the road?

I don’t remember. I also think it is lame for Katz to hide behind the “everyone else does it so it’s okay” line of thinking. There is no excuse for the amount of players that have come and gone from this program. I did find it interesting that Metcalf brought these issues up at this time, but I guess it is fair game as 2 more players (Rak and Owayed) left this program during the offseason. I would have loved to see Katz' body language when asked these questions.

Bottom line is that when you aren't able to get the players you want in recruiting you have to take guys that aren't really your first choice or a great fit for the program. I feel like right now we don't have that problem with high quality guys, not to mention some stability with some freshmen recruits the last couple of years and a sophomore recruit.
