Stadium Improvements

So I guess we're breaking ground on a new weight faculty next year, is this true? When walking into the stadium I heard a kid say, "at least Utah State has what looks like a real stadium." I wonder if Weber is ever going to actually build a real college football stadium or if we will stick with a 1-AA product forever. These next few years will determine our fate for generations.

Bovee needs to hire an architect to make a master plan for what we would like the stadium to look like. Then the plan can be broken into phases and funded every 10 years or so. This should include removal of the track and seating in the south endzone, along with suites and the new weight room. The north endzone could include and entrance plaza and stay open to maintain majestic mountain views.

Unfortunately, long as we have a track, we will always be considered a lower product and have attendence issues. We can add an end zone plaza, but unless we remove the track, the plaza will not look like part of the stadium. Utah State's stadium is a good blueprint for what we could have. Sacramento's stadium is what an end zone plaza will look like without track removal.

Problem is Stewart Stadium already holds a capacity close to 18,000 and we cant even fill that, we could add a whole new section in the south endzone but it'll be empty for every game. It would be like Portland State building a 10,000 seat basketball arena when they cant even fill the 1,200 seat gym they have now. The call for expansion shouldn't even come up until Weber starts selling out games and the need for more seats even comes up.

Look at the rest of the Big Sky, as far as Stadiums go, Stewart Stadium is easily the 3rd best campus stadium. Also Montana and Montana State can increase their stadium sizes cause they are the only games in town. They aren't competing with long history FBS schools within 30 miles away. They have the WHOLE state of Montana to themselves. We don't have that.

Weber can eventually get the crowds but they gotta prove they can be consistent winners at the FCS level. Right now this current Weber team is doing what most Weber teams of the past didn't do and that is get better each year. In the past we would have a great season, have high expectations for the next season and then end up going like 3-8. It's hard to keep the fans coming that way.

Weber is an FCS team, and will always be one. That doesn't mean we cant expand, but there is absolutely no point unless we can fill the one we have.

I'm not saying add a ton of capacity. However, if we're going to build a weight room and endzone plaza, we might as well make it part of a great stadium.

It's the classic chicken and egg problem. The public will say they don't go to the game because we play in a glorified high school stadium. (Of course that's not true but it's the perception when your surrrouded by other big teams with enclosed in stadiums.)

On the other hand, Weber tells the public we don't have a bigger stadium because the public doesn't sell it out.

Since Weber is the company selling the product and the public is buying, it's not the publics job to buy a lesser product until it's improved. It's Weber's job to put out the product customers will buy.

I'm not talking about going to 30k. Just move the track and add a few thousand in one end zone and put a plaza in the other. About 22k sounds right.

While I agree that the track makes the stadium look more amateur, removing it adds another problem. You would then have to build a track and field facility somewhere else at a significant cost. I don't see that happening, at least not anytime soon. Also, I don't think stadium improvements alone would do much to improve attendance. The attendance problem goes much deeper than the stadium. And as for what USU is doing, I couldn't care less.

If you look hard enough, you can find master plans for the university. In one that I saw, it stipulated that at some point the university was going to build a track and field facility. When or where? That is the question (in another, there was a plan to build a new stadium where University Village currently sits).

As for the North Endzone plaza, last year at this time we heard from the AD that they were really close, just needing another million or so to do the job right. However, I heard in the spring that the department went away from the "plan" established and now want to add a lot more, that'll cost more. What worries me is that we haven't heard much about it for almost a year. There was speculation that there would be a ground breaking sometime this Fall, after football, and that it would be done before the next football season. Well, if that were the case, we would be hearing a lot more from athletics. Agreed, I want them to do this right, but we have been hearing about this endzone project for almost a decade and it seems like it is never going to get done.

At the first coaches luncheon in Sept., the AD mentioned the north endzone plans, I don't recall any of the details nor did it seem imminent unless significant additional funds were raised.

If he isn't reporting on it, then it is back in the planning phase. They must have added a bunch of stuff to the original plan. Early next year will represent a decade that this "North Endzone" plan was first brought up.

Imagine if our AD, 10 years ago, at the same time of introducing this plan also decided to put effort into building a strong student following. If he would have invested time, money, and effort into filling a student section and building a student group, I'd wager, he'd probably have some more options showing up, young alumni or alumni, who would be willing to dig a bit deeper to support Wildcat Athletics or projects. To me, since the early 2000s, it seems as if Weber has lost an entire generation of students due to lackluster efforts in recruiting, marketing to, and investing in students. I know that this isn't merely Jerry's fault WSUSA, SAAC, and SAA all can be blamed, but Jerry has had chances of his own, but hasn't acted on them.

10 years later, the university struggles mightily to retain students. Having a strong student following for university athletics would be another reason for staying at the school. Yet, we don't have one and athletics doesn't even try to communicate a message to a virtual captive audience. To me, each year, they waste another opportunity. He needs money to move projects forward. He is hitting up the same tired group of ancient alumni, who he is finding more and more likely on the wrong side of the grass. Regrettably, there aren't a lot of alumni taking these past supporters places. We have the most students in the history of the school and there is virtually no message enticing these students to participate. Weber students just go to class and then work and home. Nothing to connect them to the university. We are just like SLCC. Utah State is visiting this Friday and there is nothing on campus. Thankfully, there will be a decent crowd because of word of mouth, but once again, imagine if our AD who has been here for a decade, would take the initiative to communicate a message of participation to our students? If he did, I think he would be shocked at the results. USU raised tens of thousands of dollars from USUfans.com...a freakin message board raises money for them. The vast majority of their membership are individuals who graduated between 2002 and 2012. I would argue that we have experienced as much athletic success over the past decade but monetarily we have been damned. 10 years ago, they had a budget barely above ours, now it is twice ours. In the same amount of time, ours has virtually stayed stagnant. I gotta give Jerry credit for maintaining a competitive department with a budget that hasn't grown, but imagine if he invested in students and young alumni over the past 10 years. I think he would have more money and more support. A lost decade...

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS LUCK, IT IS PREPAREDNESS MEETING OPPORTUNITY.

According to Bovee, construction on the north endzone project should start this summer and should be finished in time for the 2019 season.

Should be interesting to see what the final project will look like since they had to basically redesign it due to the fault line running through the field. Can't wait to see it.

I'd love to see a rendering of the plan. By the way, Jerry could have asked anyone who is a geologist or engineer that the fault goes down the middle of the field. I have a minor in Geology and have known that my entire life. Geo-wildcat could have done a study for a discount.

Regardless, I'm proud Jerry got this done! Awesome!!

They had a rendering of it at the signing party tonight. Looks impressive to me. It will include offices, weight room, meeting rooms, locker room, and more. They are still looking for donations. The more money they can get the nicer it can be. Everybody and anybody is encouraged to donate. Let's get this thing done. :thumb: :thumb:

I watched the Jerry Bovee Show and heard him say that construction is schedule to begin in August on the North Endzone project? Just double checking with the members, who might have also viewed the show, but I'm not hearing things? That is what he actually said; RIGHT? Can I get an AMEN?
