Stadium Renovation Mega-Thread

I was thinking they put press box in on visitor side...so when on tv it looks wayyyyy better....then build it such that a later time.. part of "The Plan" will build it so you can easily take those shiity bleachers out and replace them with less shittier seats down the road when I'll prolly be dead. Let's Gooooooooo!!!!!!! Hey Dopa what's your thoughts?

You know this is my pet peeve topic. I think the new grandstands are integrated into the press box facility. I wouldn’t expect greatness. In reality, just building an erector set bleacher more akin to the one in the end zone except longer would be a good starting point. Those look like a much higher quality stand than the ones on the sideline.

Frankly, anything is better than what we have today. This should’ve always been done in phases. The worst setback we ever faced was the all-or-nothing approach to the old Gateway Project admin had when we were winning a lot of games. The unfeasibility of that deflected any momentum to get a more reasonable project accomplished.

Yes those visitors bleachers have been an issue for many/all of us for years and years. I will believe it when I see as far as getting rid of those butt-ugly bleachers. I watched game and forgot to look at the much talked about track improvements they spent good money on. Had i noticed the big improvements on the track (that EWU spent good money on) I'm positive I would have been righteously impressed.

The current east side aluminum bleachers have 15 rows while the picture put out by the university only shows 10 rows. My hunch is they will just roll those aluminum stands out during construction and when the new press box is completed they just roll them right back in place. Once that new press box is built that pretty much ends the debate of upgrading the east side stands. With a home opener attendance of 4,389 it hard to advocate for any kind of seating expansion. Central Washington's home opener last year had 4,377 and had 5,001 for a game against West Texas A&M.

Personally once the press box is up and if you can't see them from Washington Street I could care less what they put in that spot. That's for students and visitors right? If we aren't gonna vie for BSC championships and go to playoffs most every year the capacity of 8,500 or whatever the number is..is fine with me. Ten rows of roll in seats AOK. Would I be happier if the 10 rows of seats looked really cool...yes. I'm so beat down on the subject that New Press Box is good so on tv I don't have to see that side of the field...bonus! And when potential students and potential student athletes tour campus it wont come across as a sub par Division One University.

That's not a great point. Games before school starts are always low attendance. Using that argument why upgrade at all. No cap. We're letting Best slowly destroy the program and any excitement it had around it why even bother. I don't know if he is on these forums but I saw a EWU fan on reddit comment. "The problem with the titanic wasn't that it wasn't big enough." Its like we're adding another wing to the sinking ship.

You should build out a stadium for the highest attendance games, not the lowest. We have Montana State and Montana coming this year, those will probably be huge games. Ostensibly you would plan for more attendance in the future as the school becomes bigger and the program does better.

They could build the press box building far enough back so the stands can be upgraded in the future.

The track is top-notch, btw. The good money you describe did, in fact, buy a really good track. Sucks that our football stadium is a multi-use facility, but the track is awesome.

* That is awesome. I didn't want it moved only because i figure putting it somewhere else wouldn't do it justice. Was a 23 year Head Track Coach

At half time on the radio Larry Weir talking to AD Tim Collins. They are right now talking about phase 2 of improvements.. The new press box was emphasized and Larry ask him and are you improving the stands? Well, Collins dodged the question then Larry asked him directly so are the stands getting changed and/or improved? Collins much have been a politician is his other life as he did a great job not answering but deflection into going back to the phase 2 improvements (minus the stands) and mentioned phase 3...briefly. Said new turf coming. Take that for what it's worth. We shall see....

Didn’t they just replace the turf like 3 years ago?

Yea, heard and thought the same.

Best's contract runs through 2027. Phase 2 is supposed to be complete for the 2028 season. Seems like good timing for a reboot to me.
I thought construction is going to commence immediately following this season. It's going to take two years to build that press box? Seems like a long time.

Here's the schedule we know right now:

  • October 10, 2026: EWU will hold the ceremonial Phase 2 groundbreaking during Homecoming.
  • 2027: Actual construction is scheduled to begin. EWU has not yet publicly specified the month construction will start.
  • Summer 2028: Construction should be substantially complete.
  • 2028 football season: The new press box is scheduled to be open and operational before the season begins.

Based on that, I'm guessing they start spring/summer of 2027 and construction takes a year to be complete by fall of 2028.
