Stadium Upgrade survey

Agreed, let's get the word out on this even more. Send it to every EWU Alum you know who is a fan of athletics at Eastern. I wonder if there's a way to "share" it on facebook.

Of course there is, and I already have.

Agreed, get to word out on this and get people to fill out the survey. I wish there was a little more focus on general stuff rather than the VIP stuff, but that is probably where most of the money will be generated from. What are some other ideas for what could go in the new facilities?

They seem to be aiming high with the VIP stuff but I suppose there are enough corporate $'s around to make those prices feasible.

1) As for other ideas, I think a priority needs to be placed on parking/transportation. They've now blocked parking on Washington Street from the stadium east, all the way back to the top of the big hill. The game day experience begins with first impressions and if the casual fan has to walk a mile just to get in, you're off to a bad start. They mitigated this somewhat last week with golf cart taxi service and I think things like that or off-site parking in downtown Cheney with shuttle service would be cool. Perhaps they could partner with the business groups to get something like that accomplished. It would certainly help the pubs and restaurants in that part of town. I also like the possibility of bringing restaurants up to the stadium. A couple of dedicated STA buses from Spokane would also help.

Remember, with the size of the new grandstand you're taking out existing parking. I'm sure they've already thought of this, I just wonder what the plans are.

2) Hopefully with the rumors of the locker rooms existing in the new structure they'll create a "run-out" tunnel.

There is a lot of parking available all over the campus, you don't need to park on Washington Street. Almost every parking lot that is not on Washington Street is vacant during the games (and free), people just need to use them. It is a shorter walk from Hargreaves than it is from Washington and a much nicer experience as well. People just need to come to the game from downtown and not Betz/Washington.

I have an RV spot so it doesn't affect me and even if it did, I like walking. I'm thinking of the casual fans who we want to come out for one game, have a terrific experience and get hooked.

1) Do the lots you speak of require a permit on game days? If not, does the casual observer know this? 2) Walking from Hargreaves is still more of a jaunt than I think most people want to take.

Expanding the upper parking lot has to be part of any plan, especially if they are still considering re-routing Washington Street on game days. There's really no reason why not to; I don't think it would be that pricey to add a few hundred spaces up there. As I have pointed out before, the U owns the land. In my opinion parking keeps people away for the larger games.

The lots around campus are currently free parking and not managed on the weekends. I park at Hargreaves and walk over. The furthest lot on campus is only a 9 minute walk to the Roos Gate. It is a lot closer than parking way out on Washington Street. I love the idea of having the downtown business district sponsor a shuttle so people can party at Wild Bills and take a shuttle before and after. Keep the drinkers off the streets while supporting local business.
