I have been married for a decade now. So it's probably a good thing I don't get the time of day from the spirit squad. As far as Tal goes that's another story.
When a Donor donates money it is project specific usually. Quit bringing up the 1 Mil, and flatscreens it's irrelevant.
Lol...I didn't claim to be pre-dent or pre-med in college so none of the dancers ever went for me.
There are a couple of other things behind this story. Skeeter is right, when a donor drops a large chunk of cash on the university, he/she decides what they want done with it. I know Ogden City hates it, but that is what happened with the climbing wall at the gym. A donnor gave money specifically for that project. Weber kept saying that Ogden City had a nice wall at the Junction, and that they had agreed to share it with Weber. But the donnor didn't go for it. He said he would take the money back if the university didn't spend it on how he wanted them to spend it. Hey, I'm not complaining about the Climbing Wall. At the time it made me scratch my head, but now I think it is a great addition to the university.
Same thing applies to the football field. The university isn't using athletic funds to make the changes. All the Stewart Stadium/Dee Events Center upgrades have been funded by private donations. Unfortunately, the state cut Higher Education, who automatically will cut athletics (non-academic area). If the team isn't a money maker, then they are going to face cuts. Also, if the team isn't a true competitor then they will see definite cuts. Spirit Squad, as much as we all love watching them; especially CATCAT, isn't a true competitive athletic. They are an aesthetic/cosmetic element of atheltic competition, who enhance the atmosphere at the money making venues. Yes, they are talented, and in my opinion are part of athletics, but unfortunately, they are the bottom of the athletic totum poll.
Finally, there were some issues with the Spirit Squad this past year, that might have been behind the cuts. The team was to large and the coach/advisor couldn't handle them. There were a number of incidents that should have suspended the teams and seen a number of participants kicked off. But due to their low profile, the university was able to look around it without anything happening. From what I heard, they are lucky even to still have a team.
I for one am a fan of the dancers/cheerleaders, but at times in the past few years, its seems there are as many dancers/cheerleaders on the field/floor as students in the stands. However, with that being said, it is a shame that their program had significant funds cut.
As for the field. WTF is with the WEBER STATE in the middle?? Thats really UGLY and PLAIN!! If the Donnor requested that design well okay, but if it was chosen, come on...a block W would be better.
