Yeah, like not allowing the spirit squad to compete anymore. Must be where he got the extra $$$ to build the plaza. Hope you like a spirit squad that looks like the production of "Heavyweights 2". :dunce:
Ugh did I miss something? What does spirit squad have to do with football?

Jerry is doing a great job. The excitement is growing in the community. People/fans are coming back into the fold and new ones are being created every day. All of us need to do our parts, as well. We need to become part of the solution. If you give money, give more. If you don't give money, start. If you can't give money, bring more friends. I believe that the administration is doing their part, let us do ours.

Go Wildcats!!!

I agree, we can all point fingers, but when you point your finger, there are still 3 pointing back at you. Although we can't make it to every game, we support Coach Stack and the Gridiron Club, we have supported the annual Golf tournament for the past few years, we've purchased tables for the Spring Banquet, and even assisted the Purple Pak's travel expenses when we could. Not blowing the horn, but just saying if everyone did just a little, we'd be further down the road where we all would like to be.

We can't wait to see the new field; but there sure were a lot of great memories from the old turf......

GO WILDCATS GO WILDCATS GO WILDCATS

Just thought that it's sad that we spend millions of dollars on football stadium renovations but can't spend a few thousand a year so that the spirit squad (who are former national champions) to compete. This is coming from a former football player by the way. Are you saying the spirit squad doesn't add some entertainment to the football and basketball games? How many championshipsubdivision.com avatars are of Oregon's cheerleader?

The administration and athletic department cut funding to the spirit squad for competition. I've been a huge supporter of Jerry Bovee but I am offended that we spend all this money on our football program but can't spare chump change for the Spirit Squad who raises most of their funds through their own fundraising efforts. I know this isn't the correct forum but Skeeter just said that Bovee is getting it done with this project, I, however, think we're selling our souls of competition for cosmetic upgrades. I think when I was playing football if they gave me the choice of either getting flat-screen TVs in the locker room or letting the ladies get the opportunity to compete at nationals, I'd let them go. Athletics is athletics and we gotta support the women if we expect their support in return. Does the spirit squad bring a lot of money into the athletic department?? No. Do they ask for a lot of money each year? No, they almost operate independent of WSU. My wife danced at WSU for 5 years and only some of the dancers receive a half-tuition scholarship. Throw them a bone! I don't know if you have any children, but if this happened to my little girl I'd be freakin pissed. :twocents:

with that said, i agree, although everyone has to make adjustments, maybe there are other options available that should be considered, i don't know, only suggesting.

Bigskychamps, I usually like your posts, but you are way out in right field on this one buddy.

BOVEE IS GETTIN IT DONE, PERIOD.

If the lovely young ladies want to compete they should pay their way, raise more money. If the AD's office feels they need to cut their budget for competition, I support that.

At the end of the day nobody cares about anything but men's bball, and football, barely.

If your wife was the Twinkie eating champ of The Institute club you would be complaining that they took the Twinkies out of the vending machines because of the shortage in twinkies she was causing.

Really? You can't spare $20,000 (or 2%) of your 1 million dollar donation? To a group that gets fans out to the games, remember, one of the largest attendance games is when the spirit squad has the young girls do their dance at halftime. How many other women's sports are responsible for getting people out to the games? Also, are you saying that you don't appreciate having good-looking and talented ladies representing your university? You won't get either without the opportunity to compete. As an athlete and former student-athlete at WSU it offends me that they would take away the heart and soul of sports which is competition. They have ONE competition every year and they just cut it. But good thing we have new flat screen TVs in the football locker room. I don't mean to go on a rampage and stand up on a soapbox on this issue, but I guess I expected more out of our most loyal wildcat fans. Skeeter we all know you're just jealous that the spirit squad won't give you the time of day, but you shouldn't hold such a grudge. I guess I'm on my own here so I'll leave it at that, I'm glad that Bovee is doing something, but I think he made a mistake on cutting them off.

I have been married for a decade now. So it's probably a good thing I don't get the time of day from the spirit squad. As far as Tal goes that's another story.

When a Donor donates money it is project specific usually. Quit bringing up the 1 Mil, and flatscreens it's irrelevant.

Like I said I'm done with it, just wanted everybody to know about it. I expected more support for them. One million donation to specific projects or teams frees up other funds for other projects/teams. Increased funds in certain budgets doesn't equal less funds in the overall budget.

Still not much of a fan of the overall field design, the endzones are ok, but Its still missing the Big Sky logo. We are part of the Big Sky, the soon to be strongest conference in the country, why not be proud and show it?

Not to mention that the north endzone plaza would look sweet if they got the money necessary to build it.

The endzones are OK, but the mid field is a little too plain if you ask me. I would have preferred a large logo or wildcat, similar to the wildcat that used to be on the basketball court. And yes, Big Sky logos would be nice.

I think the cheer squad and dance team would benefit greatly from something akin to the Roundball Club/Gridiron Club. $20,000 sounds like chump change when you get 50 to 100 of your closest friends together.... Just sayin... :kisswink:

I love those groups. He!!, I might even open up my wallet for them.

In the mean time, dang, I am happy with what is going on with our high profile sports and Jerry seems to be making every effort to strengthen our secondary sports as well. As much as we hate to admit it, its all about money, when it comes right down to it.

Did they ever announce a design winner? Wasn't it you who use to have your dream field at the bottom of every post. I thought your design was right on the money.

Lol...I didn't claim to be pre-dent or pre-med in college so none of the dancers ever went for me.

There are a couple of other things behind this story. Skeeter is right, when a donor drops a large chunk of cash on the university, he/she decides what they want done with it. I know Ogden City hates it, but that is what happened with the climbing wall at the gym. A donnor gave money specifically for that project. Weber kept saying that Ogden City had a nice wall at the Junction, and that they had agreed to share it with Weber. But the donnor didn't go for it. He said he would take the money back if the university didn't spend it on how he wanted them to spend it. Hey, I'm not complaining about the Climbing Wall. At the time it made me scratch my head, but now I think it is a great addition to the university.

Same thing applies to the football field. The university isn't using athletic funds to make the changes. All the Stewart Stadium/Dee Events Center upgrades have been funded by private donations. Unfortunately, the state cut Higher Education, who automatically will cut athletics (non-academic area). If the team isn't a money maker, then they are going to face cuts. Also, if the team isn't a true competitor then they will see definite cuts. Spirit Squad, as much as we all love watching them; especially CATCAT, isn't a true competitive athletic. They are an aesthetic/cosmetic element of atheltic competition, who enhance the atmosphere at the money making venues. Yes, they are talented, and in my opinion are part of athletics, but unfortunately, they are the bottom of the athletic totum poll.

Finally, there were some issues with the Spirit Squad this past year, that might have been behind the cuts. The team was to large and the coach/advisor couldn't handle them. There were a number of incidents that should have suspended the teams and seen a number of participants kicked off. But due to their low profile, the university was able to look around it without anything happening. From what I heard, they are lucky even to still have a team.

I for one am a fan of the dancers/cheerleaders, but at times in the past few years, its seems there are as many dancers/cheerleaders on the field/floor as students in the stands. However, with that being said, it is a shame that their program had significant funds cut.

As for the field. WTF is with the WEBER STATE in the middle?? Thats really UGLY and PLAIN!! If the Donnor requested that design well okay, but if it was chosen, come on...a block W would be better.

Yeah it was me, I wasnt a winner, I also thought my design was right on the money, but I guess the folks at Weber didnt think so. They probably didnt like my Black endzones design. :ohno:

I dont like "Weber State" at midfield like others have mentioned its way too plain, A large Wildcat logo would have been worlds apart better.

ps, anybody know Jerry Bovee's email address?

I understand where you are getting at, but you do seem to be a bit misinformed. The reason a lot of universities have a difficult time funding clubs like the cheer/spirit squads is because of just that. They are clubs, not official sanctioned NCAA sports (not at every university mind you). WSU doesn't receive outside funding for those programs, just like the hockey and rugby squads in Ogden don't get much cash from the university. It's a very small pool to draw from.

When it comes to football, you are right in one sense; it is incredibly expensive. But contrary to popular belief, football and basketball programs at WSU make no money. Not a cent. As a matter of fact, less than 3 percent of schools around the country, including BCS conference ones. The sports are subsidized by outside funding (advertising, sponsorships, apparel, etc...) to cover the gap. Weber State could sell out every home game in every sport and still not draw a profit. It's always unfortunate when teams/clubs are victims of budget cuts and in some cases, given the ax entirely (which almost happened to football in the early 90s, by the way). However, NCAA rules restrict schools from using NCAA money to fund outside programs. Similar rules often apply to donors and boosters, who make massive donations. They hold a lot of sway and power about where their money goes. Thus the new field, which has been paid almost entirely for by Robert Marquardt.

Bottom line, if you are pissed about the cheer squad not getting enough money, Jerry Bovee isn't the guy to complain too. Complain to the state legislature who continue to cut funds from Weber State. The same goes for students who don't like the increased tuition, limited services, terrible shuttle bus system, and so on. :coffee:
