Strange co-incidence

In 1983, Univ of Virginia played North Carolina State in an Elite Eight round of NCAA tournament. It was the final college game for Ralph Sampson, who went on to a big NBA career.

Ralph Sampson's son plays for East Carolina, who will take on the Wildcats on Tuesday in the CIT Finals.

The co-incidence: The Virginia/NC State game was played on a neutral court: in the Dee Events Center at Weber State University !

The ESPN show 30 on 30 currently playing about NC State had footage of that game, as a friend pointed out. He saw the Weber State signage in the background. Strange how things intersect...

That was the first thing I thought of also when I read that Ralph's son is on East Carolina's team. I was actually at the game when NC State upset Virginia. It was a huge deal. I remember sitting right next to two rabid NC State fans who had traveled all the way to Ogden. I remember my friends and I getting out of school early to go up to the DEC to watch Virginia's practice and then we all got Ralph Sampson's autograph after the practice. After they blew away Utah and then upset Virginia I was a big NC State fan hoping they could win it all.

The 30 for 30 documentary of this team was amazing! Anyone would enjoy this, not just college hoops fans. What a story of determination and of the human spirit. The 30 for 30 documentaries are normally very good but this one was excellent. It was definately fun to see the footage of the games they played at Weber also.

I believe it was 2 years ago at the Big Sky Tourney when Jim Valvano's brother was the commentator for the broadcast on espn. I remember him talking about the 1983 team and the two games they won at the DEC and that the DEC holds a special place in the hearts of their family.
