Students?

There appeared to be a total of 27 students at the game, their section up front looked totally vacant. How can they attract more students, move the game to 6PM?

GCM,

I'm a student and I have to say that the 2:05 start absolutely KILLS attendance (at least on the student side). Lots of students work during the day, do schoolwork, recover from a hangover.

Although, there are many other reasons for low attendance during day games including: Temperature, FBS games of interest on TV, Youth/H.S. Soccer/Football.

I think we would draw 10K for a 6:05 start.

While a sellout for all games would be ideal, one should factor in the quality of the opponent until we get to that point. SOU isn't going to attract the crowd that the Manure Pile or Montana will.

I thought SOU was well-represented on Saturday. I would say that they had as many fans as anyone besides UM/MSU would bring in BSC play...

Humbolt might not be a "quality opponent", but we still drew almost 11K with the 6:05 start.

In a way, SH is right. I mean, if we could convince a Nevada or Fresno State to come to Hornet Stadium (while we are still FCS), people will show up in droves if it was at 2:05pm.

I like 6:00 games until Oct. 1, 4:05 games until Nov. 1 and then 2:05 games from there. Of course, if its televised, if the broadcaster demands a certain time, then so be it.

For me, it doesn't matter because I go to every game.

The way to cure an attendance problem is to win. When we beat Weber, Portland, and go on the road and beat NAU and Montana, our record will be 6-1. If that happens, you'll see 15K - 18K for the Montana State game on Oct. 25th and it won't matter what time the game starts. Winning is everything when it comes to attendance. Sustained winning seasons (upper half of Big Sky) will create a larger loyal fan base as well.

Won't happen unless we pay these teams $300K or more. And then what if they lose? We are against two negatives, The big money schools like UM can't even get a lowly FBS to travel.

This is correct.

The students don't even wear green! Has anyone ever noticed, at least when I was a student, that you see other college's apparel represented more than Sac State's. Supposedly every Wednesday is "spirit day" where if youre caught wearing green you get a prize, I never once in 4 and a half years ever saw anyone give anything away. The band doesnt help much either, they dont pay attention to the game and are all to often screwing around. The hay snoopy song, well, its got to go. That song doesnt get anyone pumped or excited.

A lot of people I had classes with didnt even know that we had a football team, surprising isnt it. Also, few student's are familiar with FCS football and think that Sac State is DII. There was never any promotions for the games on campus and the greek community, the ones supposed to be supporting the school the most, have little to nothing to do with the games.

Students already get in for free, I don't know what else would attract more of them, possibly bringing back the beer garden.

Regarding game attendance, it is true that winning, the weather, and hangovers definitely play a role in attendance.

What about outside sport advertising like radio and TV? It may help to get the word out. They could interview some of the guys on the team and create some buzz.

Is there any talk of the games on KHTK's Sportsline 1140?

I have seen Hornet's football on local TV news sports. It would be cooler if they were broadcasting from the game. This could be a reason for a later start time so it could coincide with the 5 PM news.

While I can't say anything to StungAlum's assertions one way or the other, I will say this: if nothing has changed since the late '90s, someone has GOT to teach the fans in general how to cheer at games. (There really wasn't much to check at the Griz game last year.) I still remember at least one OT game the fans cost us because they wouldn't shut up when the kicker was on the field in regulation AND OT, causing him to miss both times as we lost. You scream your heads off when the other team has the ball, particularly as they're calling signals, and you shut the heck up when your own team has the ball.

Fix that, and we'll have great fans. Assuming they show up, that is. :-(

Fans might help a team push over the top but it is outrageous to suggest that home fans making noise caused a kicker to miss 2 field goals.

Agreed. See definition of a "basket case"...

In terms of students wearing other stuff, start a campaign similar to what we are doing at Davis. "Wear Aggie Blue" can be seen all over the place and it is starting to really catch on. Maybe also getting special shirts just for the students to wear at all games. I know you probably hate hearing it from a UCD alum, but we go through the same thing and it drives me nuts. Hell, I would rather see someone wear a Sac State shirt at a game (which I did) than a U$C or Kal shirt.

Green Thunder is no more. I agree with Aggie6thman, we need a Wear Hornet Green campaign. The students are the ones who need to push this. I agree with students wearing clothing from other schools except their own. Bugs me big time. They should be kicked out for doing that

Good ol' Visger had a rule about that in the weight room. Anything other than green, gold, black, and white (black and white are considered neutrals) was banned from the weight room.

The idea of getting stuff for free is very attractive to poor student's, possibly better or more giveaway's at game's might help.

aggie6thman, I think that that is a great idea. I don't know who would start a campaign like that though. Last Saturday a guy walked by my tailgate wearing an Oregon shirt, I asked him where his Sac pride was. His reply was that his white Oregon shirt with the Oregon name across the chest was the only green shirt he owned. A Sac State student without a green shirt, come on. You can get one for $12, I've brought buddies to games and purchased green shirts for them outside Hornet Stadium because they either never went to college or went somewhere else and did'nt have one.

I am a huge proponent of wearing team colors to a game, it just makes sense.
