July 1st signals the beginning of the final round of recruiting for the 2013 signing period. Also, the coaching staff is searching and starting to evaluate next years possible recruits. This is a huge month for our basketball teams future and continued development.

One thing that kinda worries me, is the lack of success the Cats are having within the state. Are the Cats even looking at any players instate for this fall's signing period?

I know that we have offered some instate kids. The problem, as always, is that to be good enough to play in our program, you are also meeting the standards of all the other schools within the state. The reality is that many LDS kids are born into families with a built in bias to playing for God. YBU can not sign them all, but it makes the competition, for the remaining players, intense. We get a few and we would like more local players. However, we can not take players who do not help our program in any way, other than as a walk on. Some of the walk on players can make our team, Van Pelt is a prime example.

We have a much better record of getting top tier talent when going for out of state players. or getting transfers when they find out that they fit better with us. :thumb: :thumb:

Im still very curious as to what the coaches are going to do with the open scholarship for this coming year. I have a feeling they just hold onto it and use it for next year. I wish we were able to get a really good D1 transfer to sit out this year like what Otis, Allred and Slobondan did. Dang you Juan lol. With that one and the four open spots for the 2014 class this is a huge recruiting time for our program. I wish we could get into more of the elite instate players, but for one there are not many legit D1 players in the state and Utah and second I hate to admit it, but we would be the 4th choice. If they are a legit D1 player and are LDS they are all but BYU's for the taking. With Utah being in the Pac 12 they have a leg up on the rest of the state even though the UTES suck nuts. Then USU is a big draw too with their program being so solid for so long. Being in the MWC will help the Aggies too for instate players. I hate to admit it, but out of the 4-5 D1 players that come out of Utah we dont' have much of a chance. I like how the coaches are hitting Arizona, Texas and California hard. I really like the Texas connection. Im not worried. Maybe in 3-4 years when Utah becomes the laughing stock of the Pac 12 and we can beat USU on a consistent basis which I think we can. I really think we can surpass the Aggies over the next few years even though they are in the MWC. BYU is going to be tough to surpass. I hate to admit it, but the Cougars just have our number. They have some great recruiting classes too, they are going to be very good.

The coaches are not going to use that open spot unless somebody, better than anyone we have, falls into their lap. They are not in any kind of a jam for bodies. They opened that spot up for Juan and he chose not to take it. You never know what might happen over a summer, but my guess is that spot will be filled with a fall recruit. Probably a freshman. I believe that this class will include 2 bigs, 2 wings, and one point guard. I'm not sure when Ryan gets home from his mission, but if it's next summer he could be one of the bigs. There seems to be a lot of big guards and small forwards on their wish list, keeping in mind that this class, with the exception of a player or two, may not make a direct impact until 2016.

However, it is still possible that somebody could fall our way. Notable, summer transfers from the past include Rico Washington, Stan Rose, Slobodon Osokalic, to name a few. You wouldn't turn players like that away when you have an open scholarship. :twocents:
