The Portland State men's basketball team will be taking a foreign tour in the month of August, traveling to play three games in Nassau, Bahamas as part of the sixth annual "Summer of Thunder" presented by the Bahamas Basketball Federation.

Teams traveling to play during the "Summer of Thunder" include North Carolina, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Morehead State, Northern Arizona, Chattanooga, Alabama State, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Whitman, Louisiana Tech, Pittsburgh, Stanford and Portland State. Under NCAA rules, teams are allowed to take one foreign trip out of season every four years. PSU made a similar trip to the Bahamas four years ago, winning two of three games.

Games will run from Aug. 2-25 with the collegiate teams playing a variety of All-Star, National and Club teams. All games will take place at the Sir Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium in Nassau.

Portland State will play games on Aug. 22 (vs. Real Deal Shockers), Aug. 24 (vs. P.J. Stringers) and Aug. 25 (vs. Providence Storm).

"The extra 10 practices (in preparation) are a big focus for us," said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. "We can start implementing offensive and defensive philosophies, work new players into the system, see how they blend together, and do some team building."

Geving's Vikings finished 17-15 last season, 11-9 in the Big Sky Conference. PSU reached the Big Sky semifinals, then was selected to participate in the CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament. Seven letterwinners and three starters return from that group. The Vikings also have two redshirts back and signed six players for the 2014-15 season.

The Vikings will be led by second-team All-Big Sky Conference guard Gary Winston (11.3 ppg, 2.7 apg, .422 3-pt FG%), Big Sky co-6th Man of the Year DaShaun Wiggins (12.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg) and point guard Tim Douglas (11.8 ppg, 3.1 apg). Top newcomers include local products Collin Spickerman (6-8 forward from Jesuit HS and Clark College) and Bryce White (6-5 guard from Benson Tech and Chemeketa CC).

"(Participating in the tournament) is a good way to look at different lineups and see which combinations work well together. The new players have some time to learn the system and we can see how they fit in. We can also experiment with some things we may want to try next season," said Geving.

Portland State will practice on campus Aug. 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, and 20 before leaving on the trip.

I think the extra ten practices are huge for this coming season.

On paper, I think we're more talented team than last year, and that's saying a lot with losing Richardson to graduation.

With extra court time, I'd like to see what guys like Cason, Spickerman, Bamba can do for us down low. Anyone have any idea of how BigCat is looking coming into practice? I'd love to see him see average about 20 minutes per game and perhaps flirt with a few double doubles.
