Suspension

The Big Sky Conference has suspended Eastern Washington University football player Artise Gauldin for an illegal hit, Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton announced Tuesday.

Un-be-lieveable! My understanding is that this tackle was the one during the punt return. The hit didn't even draw a flag during play. The only mistake that was made was the one by the punt returner who didn't call for the fair catch! What was the tackler supposed to do, slow down and make a softer tackle?

Sucks dont it.

We had 2 players suspended early in the season.

a UNC player did a textbook targeting hit on one of our players last week, no flag and no suspension.

I understand the reasoning behind the suspensions but think that it is being applied inconsistently

I agree completely. This puts way too much on officials, both on the field and in the office. They already struggle to do their jobs, adding this rule doesn't help. I understand they are trying to protect the players, but there is no way this can, or will be, enforced consistently.

This seems a lot more fair than the call made against Wilkerson last year. This one was helmet to helmet. In Gauldins defense, the kick returner was recoiling anticipating contact and actually lowered his head which created the head to head contact. I'm not sure there was a better way for Gualdin to have played it. However, it was helmet to helmet, and sometimes that gets you suspended.

I also agree that the fair catch rule was put in to protect a player in this position, and was not exercised. Seems to me that puts the returner at fault as well.

I agree with what they're trying to do, but this isn't the right answer.

Yes, this sucks.

(Child Please. )

This is so stupid it makes me want to vomit.

You know the guys in the league office, just as the guys in the NFL, never stepped foot on the football field and are just acquiescing to pressure to keep injuries to a minimum. If you've never been running full steam trying to make an open field tackle, it is impossible to gauge if someone is going to get hit in the head... You simply can't avoid helmet-to-helmet contact in full speed football.

Anyone who thinks otherwise ought to try to catch a greased-up chicken...
