SUU this week

SUU is in town this Thursday and we travel there Saturday.

They have been playing well and seem to be a bit improved from last year. They lost some good players to graduation but, as usual, have brought in some good transfers.

I've seen a limited amount of their play, but their record is great at 10-2.

This should be a good measuring stick for where we are at.

Very convincing win! That cold stretch in first half for SUU changed the dynamics of the game. I expect SUU will be motivated to bounce back Saturday...still good indicator for the Wildcats on beating a good SUU team in big fashion.

This team reminds me of the early Rahe teams. Unselfish, pass up okay shots for better shots, assist happy, and well, a team. It is really refreshing watching team basketball again.

I agree that this team looks more like Rahe's teams of his early years at Weber. I have, in recent years, not been a fan of Rahe as a coach. But this team has changed the way they attack a press, changed their inbounding, makes an effort to rebound and can shoot the lights out from 3. So maybe my disregard for Randy's coaching skills were a bit misplaced. He has actually, whether by accident or through correct assessment of recruits, shown that he can coach when he has the talent to execute his coaching. I suppose I would have to now say that it wasn't his coaching that was the problem, but poor player evaluation in his recruiting. Now that he has recruited players with skills he looks like a genius.coach again; much as he did in the early years. This team has talent, can execute and play as a team. Not to mention that it has depth even beyond the 8 or 9 players that limits his rotation to. I think that if Hunter sticks around he will turn out to be a top notch player in the Big Sky even though he gets no floor time now.

We beat them pretty soundly. I think we can expect them to give everything they've got on their home floor. I expect a tighter game Saturday. I'm hoping that our guys don't think they can relax and still win. I feel like the senior leadership on this team won't let that happen. We need to replicate the defensive effort we showed last night. IMHO, that is where this game will be won or lost.

Doubleheader games are tough to take both...but the two turnovers in final minute cost the Wildcats the game. Looks like the Tournament will be wide open for any hot team to take.

DIFFERENCES IN THE 2 GAMES
We won big the first game because of shooting at a 50% clip as compared to only a 39% clip in the loss. More specifically, the T-Birds packed it in inside apparently thinking that Weber could not hit the 3 at as high a rate as they did in the first game, and they were right. Secondarily, Weber just did not come out with any special energy at any point in this game. Looked a bit like they were just going thru the motions. Despite poor shooting and low energy they still almost pulled it off. I think Weber is by far a more overall talented team that the T-Birds. The same story as the Portland State game with the same results. Rahe's gotta get'em pumped up to play their best. Thats what it takes when you go back to back against a team.

Oh BTW, Brown was the Weber guy to bring his offensive 'A' game today. But hats off to Dillon Jones for an excellent all-around game. He has some very unusual skills and he put them on showcase in this game.

When you play very well one game, there is not a lot to clean up. However, when you play poorly in the first game, like SUU did, it gives you some specifics to work on. My take on the two games is that SUU is not as poor as they showed in the first game. on a nuetral floor, I think WSU wins 8 out of 10 games. However, it's one and out in the post season. :coffee:

It seems like Weber State doesn’t win a lot of games that are close in the final minutes. I think it’s a confidence issue for both the players and coaches.

When the Wildcats were up 1with 50 or so seconds left, I at least thought they could get a shot off and SUU would have less than 30 seconds down 1-4 points.

They may need some sports psychologist or Rahe may need to get some tips from Hill or something. I can’t remember many wins on last possessions lately. It seems to be a reoccurring problem. Whatever approach Rahe is using lately isn’t working.

I agree. We have given away 2 games like that. Hopefully, it pisses them off enough to fight a little haeder down the stretch in future games. The turnover that Brown committed, when we had a 1 point lead, seemed like a real brain fart. I'm sure he would love to have that back. Oh well, it's on to the next game. Hopefully, we just keep learning and growing the rest of the way and carry everything into next year as well. :coffee:

It is my opinion that this game was lost long before the two turnovers in the last minute or so. SUU packed their defense inside daring Weber to hit the three and they didn't. It came down to whether Weber could the three well enough. If we had shot at the same clip in the previous game would have won going away. Rahe's offense is built around the three shot and when the team is not hitting it well they lose to any competition with anywhere close to the same talent level as we are.

I agree that the game plan is built around the three-point shot. That makes it tough to get on long winning streaks.

Still, yesterday it was in their hands, and they fumbled the ball away. It’s not just this year, it happens a lot. We all remember Baker turning over the ball in the last minute in the Championship game vs North Dakota. Even the Championship game they won vs Montana was because both teams couldn’t hit a shot in the last three minutes.

I really am having a tough time remembering a close game they won in the final minute. It’s been a while, I think.

This year is hard to get to excited as it is unequal footing with games played, and there is still a possibility COVID-19 wins the conference championship.

It’s on to the next game with hopefully some lessons learned.
