A football player from Portland State University was credited with chasing down a suspected robber late Monday morning at a MAX stop near SW 5th and Morrison.

"I ride the MAX all the time," said Taylor Martinek, a tight end for the Vikings who played high school football at Jesuit.

Martinek's commutes on the MAX are normally uneventful. But on Monday, the 20-year-old witnessed a man steal a woman's cell phone and he decided to chase after the thief.

"When I caught up to him, I hit him a couple of times," said Martinek. "He tried to get away so I slammed him into the fountain."

The suspect continued to try and run so Martinek, 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, did his best impression of his dad, Brian Martinek, a former Portland assistant chief of police.

"I did the little police arm behind the back thing," said Martinek. "Slammed him into a tree, then a bunch of people came and held him there for me."

Officers were not far behind. They arrived at the scene and arrested 18-year-old Tyler Adams. He is facing one count of third degree robbery, but he may have gotten away if it were not for Martinek.

"Right place," Martinek said, "at the right time."
