Team USA kicked off the Women's World Championship this morning (Cali time) with a 63-0 blowout of Austria. There is no box score available yet, but it seems that three American QBs ran wild on the Austrian defense. In the article I saw (I wasn't about to fork over 9.90 euros for a PPV game on the Internet at 4 AM), no mention was made of Sacramento Siren HB/PR Julie Wicher-Shockley. This puts USA on top of Group A with two points. Next action for Austria is Tuesday vs. Finland. USA closes out pool play Thursday against Finland.

Canada opened Group B action with a 12-6 win over host Sweden, a huge underdog. Sweden faces Germany Tuesday, and then Canada takes on Germany on Thursday to finish pool play.

Group records will determine seeding for the classification games on Saturday: Fifth Place, Bronze Medal and Gold Medal games will be played all on Saturday.

Sunday

Group A: USA 63, Austria 0.
Group B: Canada 12, Sweden 6.

Tuesday

Group A: Finland 50, Austria 16.
Group B: Germany 14, Sweden 0.

Thursday

Group B: Canada 20, Germany 12.
Group A: USA 72, Finland 0.

Saturday

Fifth Place: Sweden 20, Austria 18.
Bronze Medal: Finland 26, Germany 18.
Gold Medal: USA 66, Canada 0.

Gold Medal: USA
Silver Medal: Canada
Bronze Medal: Finland

Tournament MVP: Kansas City Tribe HB Rusty Sowers

Sac Sirens HB/PR Julie Wicher-Shockley scored touchdowns in both Thursday's rout of Finland and Saturday's Gold Medal Game vs. Canada. Coach John Konecki (Chicago Force) named Shockley one of four honorary captains for the Gold Medal Game.
