Viking Men's Basketball Sees Television Exposure Increase

To the victors go the spoils.

That is the case for the defending Big Sky Conference champion Portland State men's basketball team. The Vikings, already scheduled for an all-time high of six locally televised games this year, may now have two more on available on Comcast SportsNet.

CSN will be picking up the semifinals and finals of the Great Alaska Shootout - a tournament in which the Vikings will participate - over the Thanksgiving weekend. The only caveat for the Vikings to be seen? They must win their opening round game with Northern Illinois.

Portland State plays Northern Illinois on Wednesday, Nov. 26, in a quarterfinal round game at the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage. That game will air on AM 910 KTRO beginning at 10 p.m. PT. If the Vikings win, they will play in a Shootout semifinal game on Friday, Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. PT. That game would be seen on CSN in tape delay at 11 p.m. following the Portland Trail Blazers vs. New Orleans Hornets broadcast. The other GAS semifinal game would also follow.

The potential Portland State semifinal game would also be replayed on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m. PT.

The Great Alaska Shootout championship game will be live on Nov. 29 at 9 p.m. PT and will be replayed on Monday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m PT.

If the Vikings were to lose their quarterfinal round game on Nov. 26, they would continue with Friday and Saturday games at the Shootout, but they would not be aired on CSN.

Teams competing at the Great Alaska Shootout include: Portland State, Northern Illinois, Hampton, Seattle, Louisiana Tech, San Diego State, Western Carolina and Alaska Anchorage.

Portland State already has six regular season games scheduled for air in the Portland area this year. Including the Great Alaska Shootout Games, that number could grow as high as eight. And, with post-season possibilities again in 2009, the number of televised games may grow to double figures. Last season, PSU had six games televised in Portland, but three came in the post-season (two at the Big Sky Tournament and one at the NCAA Tournament).

If PSU does reach the semifinals and finals of the Great Alaska Shootout, that will mean seven of the Vikings' 17 regular season road games will air on television in Portland.

Here is a listing of this year's games (and possible games) on Portland television.

Nov. 28 @ Great Alaska Shootout, 11 p.m.*, CSN
Nov. 29 @ Great Alaska Shootout, 9 p.m.*, CSN

Feb. 1 @ Montana State, 1 p.m., CSN
Feb. 8 vs. Sacramento State, 1 p.m., CSN
Mar. 10 Big Sky Conference semifinal**, CSN

** dependent on Viking results in Big Sky play

Vikings' Big Sky TV Schedule Begins This Sunday

The Big Sky Conference’s men’s basketball “Game of the Week” on Altitude Sports & Entertainment tips off its second season this Sunday as defending Big Sky champion Portland State takes on Northern Arizona in a rematch of last year’s league championship game. All Big Sky Games of the Week will air in the Portland area on Comcast Sports Net channel 37.

The contest from the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., begins at 1 p.m. PT. It can be seen live on Altitude, as well as Comcast Sports Net. Altitude is also available on DirecTV channel 681 and Dish Network channel 410, as well as many cable packages in Montana, Idaho, Utah and Colorado. Jeff Friedman will handle play-by-play duties with former Weber State and Idaho head coach Joe Cravens providing color commentary.

Portland State has grabbed national headlines recently, following its upset of seventh-ranked Gonzaga on Dec. 23. The Vikings (10-4) were selected by ESPN’s Dick Vitale as his “Team of the Week” in his weekly column on ESPN.com. The Vikings, who take on Sacramento State on Friday, are 1-0 in conference and ranked 10th in the Collegeinsider.com mid-major poll.

Northern Arizona dropped its first conference game of the season, 81-79 to Northern Colorado on Monday. Mike Adras’ Lumberjacks are 3-9 entering Friday’s home game against Eastern Washington.

Portland State is led by reigning Big Sky MVP Jeremiah Dominguez. The 5-foot-6 senior guard scored 25 points in the victory over Gonzaga. He is one of five Vikings averaging in double figures.

Northern Arizona guard Matt Johnson scored 25 points in the loss to Northern Colorado, and leads the team with an average of 11.9 points per game. NAU senior point guard Josh Wilson needs just nine assists to become the fifth player in league history to reach 600 assists in a career.

Portland State beat Northern Arizona 67-51 in the 2008 Big Sky Championship at the Rose Garden in Portland. The Vikings advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Portland State compiled a 26-7 record during the calendar year of 2008. Portland State has won 15 straight games over Big Sky opponents.

Altitude Sports & Entertainment will televise a Big Sky regular-season game each of the next nine weeks. Seven games will be televised Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. Mountain. Eastern Washington will take on Idaho State on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m., and the Bengals will battle Montana on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4:30 p.m.

Altitude will also televise the Big Sky Conference men’s semifinals on Tuesday, March 10, as well as the Big Sky women’s basketball championship on Saturday, March 14.

WOW.

I'm watching the NCAA on CBS right now (NC State v Florida), and they had a little graphic of 'noisemakers' in college basketball. PSU was the first team that they talked about. Amazing what the GU win has done.

That's fantastic. Was this during the Pitt-Georgetown game?

It was the NC State vs Florida game.

Speaking of television...

That Altitude broadcast today was terrible. Is it too much to ask for them to get the schools right during the game? Unless we're going by the 'pilots' now. ;-)

No one is going to confuse Altitude with ESPN that's for sure. Besides calling the VIKINGS, the Pilots a number of times, he called Julius Thomas, Julius Wilson. Several other name blunders along the way, but it's always nice to see Portland State on television even with marginal commentators.

I probably shouldn't complain, given our past tv exposure. Plus, I should be happy. Julius Wilson and Tyler Nelson came away with a win tonight. ;-)

Watching a little segment about the 4ot victory over Northen Arizona on Sportscenter right now. Afterwards, another little segment about Portland State's victory over Gonzaga, I think Portland State is becoming ESPN's little darling. Go Viks!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey the Big Sky is now posting highlight packages of the Altitude Big Sky Games of the Week.

You can find them in two places;

1. At bigskyconf.com - there is no archive there yet (I stress yet) so you'll get to see the most recent highlights.

2. Or at the Big Sky Conference page on Facebook - there is an archive here so if you have missed a game you can get caught up. (You don't need a Facebook account to view this page either) http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Big-Sky-Conference/44764868904?ref=nf
