Tevin McDonald visiting from UCLA

One of UCLA's starting safeties was in town this week considering a transfer. He is a RS Jr who has started 24 games the past two years, but was dismissed from the team for violation of unspecified team rules. Not sure if we would want him up here given what was in the write up below, from NBC Sports:

UCLA dismisses starting safety Tevin McDonald

Earlier today it was confirmed that three little-used reserves, including the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, decided to forego another season of eligibility at UCLA.

Unfortunately, there was another roster development for the Bruins that will have a much greater impact on the 2013 season.

Tevin McDonald, long-time starter at free safety and one of the team’s top tacklers in 2012, has been dismissed from the football program. No reason other than “violation of unspecified team rules” was given.

“It’s disappointing to me and disappointing for Tevin,” head coach Jim Mora said. “I have known him since he was a young boy. On a personal level, it’s disappointing. I hope everything turns out well for him.”

Late last year, McDonald was suspended for UCLA’s Holiday Bowl appearance for what was reportedly a third failed drug test. The Los Angeles Times notes that, “nder UCLA policy, a player loses his scholarship after a fourth positive test.”

Regardless of the specific reason for the dismissal, the loss is a rather significant one for the Bruins’ defense in general and its secondary specifically.

Last season, McDonald led the team in pass breakups (nine) and passes defensed (10), and finished third in tackles with 79. He started 24 games the past two seasons, including the first 13 of last season before his suspension.

Vernon has posted on another social media app that he has in fact transferred in.

Hope McDonald leaves the recreational "baggage" back at UCLA. tsk tsk

Is pot against NCAA rules regardless of state legality? He sounds like a hell of a football player though... talk about a great tandem at safety with him and Tonani, who I thought played exceptionally well last year in place of Minnerly.

At present, pot is banned by NCAA regs. It'll be hard for that rule to stand up because there is no "performance enhancing" benefit to pot, and if it's legal, a player could argue that such a rule is in violation of his civil liberties.

Also, where did Vernon post that? Went to look at his twitter, and I guess he's deleted his account or something. What gives?

If he comes to Cheney, that's a big get. He's a damn fine player. Plus, might be a good place for him to get back on track, as he is a legit NFL prospect.

But why the Eagles? Is there any previous connection or recruiting?
Well since he'd have to drop down to FCS to play immediately, I'd imagine he'd want to go to a contender and stay relatively close to home. Although that would also put CP in play, so perhaps he knows some guys on the team... we do have 16 guys from Cali.

Because we are badass, obviously. :thumb:

If true, the Eags might have just gotten a lot better in the defensive secondary.
Our secondary will be lights out, but the front 7 is still a big question mark.

A lights out secondary can make a front seven look solid.

If this guy can help stop the run, we need him. We couldn't stop a kitten from getting 12 yards and a first down last year, so any help will be huge.

He does Alimonylifestyle he will be playing at Eastern Washington.
His skill level is not questioned I just wonder what his attitude will do to team chemistry.

From what I have seen/read attitude isnt an issue. I also trust this coaching staff wouldnt bring in a kid that was going to corrupt the enviroment. GO EAGS !!!!! McDonald has to know he is on thin ice and will prove he is a worthy teammate.

From what I read he is a great kid with a good attitude, but he just can not sy NO to the weed. He was on thin ice at UCLA (3 failed drug test) and he knew a 4th would mean he would lose his scholarship and he still could not stop. Maybe a move to Eastern Washington will get him away from the friends he ran with at UCLA and help him turn the corner. No doubt he will make an impact on the field IF he does.

If McDonald ends up wearing an Eagle uniform, I have confidence Baldwin and Co. can keep him on track. I don't see coach having the patience for another Terry Mixon.
