That was ugly

I wish I had been able to record the game so that I could go back and rewatch it instead of having to rely on my rum and Coke affected memories.
But I don't recall seeing much that was worth a damn.

A few of my thoughts for what they are worth.

I didn't get to see the Washington St. game, but in the other two I never saw anything that really looked like RPO or up tempo with Knipp under center. Everything seemed slow and methodical.
It seemed to speed up with Regan in there though.

I've never seen a QB throw more off of his back foot, or while jumping backwards, than Regan.
If anyone was within 5 yards he was bailing.

I know it's not true, but it seemed like every run by Hall went to the 1 or 2 hole. As quick as that dude is I'd love to see something going around the end.

The defense was disturbing. It looked like they were told to wait somewhere until someone came to them.
I saw a couple of guys playing hard on D, but that was it. Maybe the other guys were playing hard but either they didn't know what to do or maybe they're just not that good.
Maybe Sac St. will be this year's champs.

Everything I saw was just bad though. I guess that's why God invented alcohol.

I think Sac State will compete for the league title. They went toe-to-toe with Arizona State, and the Sun Devils beat Michigan State, who was ranked I think no. 11. However, the game once again demonstrates the lack of ability to recruit Big Sky talent, a blowout like that should not happen. So far, the hiring of coach Fulton is a huge bust. I can call a better game. The defense knows exactly what play we are calling, every single snap. On the other side the ball, maybe the game has passed coach English?

What in the living hell is that state line lol

At least we have a quote from the world's worst football coach:
"Tonight was disappointing for us. We must go back to the drawing board and fix it for next week and beyond. We still have a lot of games ahead of us and to keep playing for."

He hasn't fixed it now, he never will.

I heard their promotion for the first home game is they are handing out brown paper bags for the first 1,000 fans that come to Nottingham. After that game though, they might have bought too many bags.

Still a fan though! Go Bears!

Not to pile on but I thought UNC would put up more of a fight. The UNC running game looked good the first 20-25 minutes of the WSU game the week prior so I though they would do more last night. Plus UNC had a respectable showing at SJSU (yeah the Spartans suck, but a good showing nonetheless). Milo Hall is a slippery runner and you have plenty of size on the OL to make the running game work.

Once it became obvious that you guys weren't going to run the ball effectively our D just started teeing off on the QB. Speaking of which, I hope Knipp is ok. He got drilled on a blitz due to a missed assignment/poor adjustment. That hit was just brutal.

Good luck the rest of the season. Oh and credit to the UNC fans that stuck it out the whole game. Being a Hornet fan we have been on the receiving end of plenty of these types of games and I sure as hell wouldn't have stayed for the whole game.

I'm not sure what to make of this program anymore. I agree with what Troy was saying at the end of the broadcast. There's no excuse for games like this, or for UNC not to be able to make any progress in football. After watching this I thought Scott Downing had snuck back onto the coaching staff, because that's how bad this team looked. I let the first two games slide because they were going against FBS talent and it was hard to judge, and I thought UNC hung tough. But this weekend, was ugly.

It looked like no wanted to be out there or knew what they were doing. The defense was absolutely atrocious. I still don't understand why the DBs give so much of a cushion, that strategy hasn't work one bit, but yet they still continue to be in that coverage. There was no containment at all. Which allowed Sac St to run around the corners all night. You can find middle school teams that are more fundamentally sound than UNC. The offense? I thought this guy they brought in was suppose to be the next best thing since sliced bread. Maybe he's over matched? I dont know.

All of this falls directly on the coaches shoulders. I'm wondering what the hell they do all week in practice. The point of practice is to prep and be prepared, not the opposite. Did the game plan say put our slowest guy on defense to cover their best athlete on the field? Does UNC lack some talent? Of course, but I don't think its that bad. I mean yeah they aren't going to push for a league title or playoff spot. But still, I think they have enough talent to at least finish middle of the pack.

Sorry Collins you need to make something happen or you need to go. You've have 8 years to "fix this", as you always say and still haven't produced anything.

Unless they completely shock everyone next weekend and get a W. This team isn't going to win a game this year.

To add to the misery, I am also a Broncos fan (from birth), a Redskins fan (by current location) and a University of Maryland fan (by location and it's where my daughter is probably going to go). The Redskins and UNC really mirror each other in their misery index.

Thanks for the post, and best of luck going forward. You have a good team.

I think when you are this bad, it's the fault of both the coaches, and players. The players in the sense that most of them are not D1 talent, but D2 or worse. They're playing hard, so you can't fault them, but Collins and staff can't bring the talent up. This is the fault of the entire staff, including Jeff Butler, a guy I continue to be less impressed with. The players don't seem, at least from the fan perspective to be getting stronger and more physical. I don't think you can underestimate the key role of the strength coach.

What Collins should do is to reevaluate his coaching style. He has not had the right formula since he got here. The first thing he should do is scrap that crazy early morning practice time. It only messes with young peoples natural time clocks. They get used to early morning game play and when they have to switch to late time game clocks compounded with jet lag when they travel, it's no reason that they come out wasted and play like crap. If early morning practice was such a good ideal then all the great teams would be doing it. We could have not looked worse than this last game that we played at Sac State. We need something if not just a change for the sake of just doing something different.

We are now playing at a level comparable to an 0 - 3 NAIA team with 24 scholarships. Southern Oregon only lost by 8 more points to Sac State then we lost by and they didn't even get shut out like we did. We really need to get this mess turned around fast. Lets hope we can get a win over South Dakota since we will have the home field advantage. Maybe the Bears can come out and show us that they really are a good football team.
