After being away from Home for 5 days I returned in time for the scrimmage, and to fine that Thatnewspaper (I have sworn not to use the name) had not written one story on the Eagles in 10 days. So after finding the scrimmage story on page 18 of sports section and seeing the all important story of Gesser on the front page I sent a letter to the Editor.
I would like to share with you my letter and Thatnewspaper’s response

To: *Sports
Subject: A new year, same old story

It helps to be the only paper in town. I wonder how much coverage you would get if there were 5 other papers?
Why does the first scrimmage of the new season for the National champs get Page 18 and a personal interest story on Gesser gets the top of the front page?
Do you have any statics on the interest of the EWU Eagles and U of W in our area? Why have you carried more articles on the Huskies than Eastern. Is it cost because you pickup the story rather than spend money on Steve? I am not ranting here I would really like to know.
Then your on line edition does not even have today's article on the Eagles so I could not make any comments on Steve's coverage.
Please let me know, will you be covering every Eastern came this year or will it be every 10 days like now?

Ron,

Stop ranting, stick with us. It's early. Eastern will be featured on our Special Football Section and we have plenty of additional coverage planned. Just like last year when we covered every game. Last Saturday's scrimmage was just that, a scrimmage. And we didn't have a page 18. But I get it, you want front page. Just not going to happen every time.

That's not much of a reply from the Sports Editor... We get it, you're not going to cover EWU like you do WSU even though one is a National Champ and the other has won 5 games in 3 seasons. But to say that it's not a matter of front page coverage every time is stupid. On the westside, UW and WSU get daily articles in both the Seattle and Tacoma papers, often the articles start on the front page and often there are multiple articles in the same edition. I used to check out Thatnewspapers' website daily and gave up because the coverage was so sporatic. Now I go on once every couple of weeks, keyword search and find the one or two articles and blog postings. I wrote a letter once and asked why they could cover a school that was at the distance of WSU but not one in Cheney and was told that Steve's gas money budget was cut so he could only go to one or two practices during the fall -- you'd have thought that Cheney was Moses Lake not 10 miles up the road (and was also told there wasn't the interest). Now that there seems to be the interest, we're told that they have things planned ... and they're going to cover every game (how special)!

At least KREM sports does a decent job covering the team and if you haven't subscribed to there newsletter, recommend that you do ...

Yeah, KREM does a decent job.

About Thatnewspaper, I would mention the fact that they did a really nice job during the championship run. It is frustrating, though, to see Thatnewspaper predominately cover Gonzaga and WSU, and shun a local STATE school who has over 35k alums in Spokane and of which 75 PERCENT OF COLLEGE GRADUATES IN THE AREA WENT TO SCHOOL AT.

Sad, but true.....but until we win consistently at the highest level we won't get the same coverage GU or WSU gets. It'll take time to get more media coverage, but as fans, alums, boosters and everyone else associated with the athletics programs, we shouldn't worry about what we can't control, and focus on what we can.

This is the Spokesman's loss.

Bergum, and Trimmer before him are terrific writers and the coverage should be much better for the above cited reasons. The Spokesman has an opportunity to stay out in front of the next deep run in the playoffs. To be the "go to" source for coverage and they are failing miserably. This is why I ended my subscription a couple of years back.

I do agree though that the coverage during the playoff run was great last year.

In fear of sounding like I am defending the SR, they deserve a little credit at times. This is a nice article about Gibbs.http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2011/sep/01/easterns-gibbs-switches-court-cornerback/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Agreed. Their coverage the past several days has been sensational. Lots of stuff on the Eags in the Seattle and Tacoma newspapers as well. Good exposure for the program. :thumb:
