FBS Drop down
San Jose State
Idaho

FCS
San Diego, supposedly non-scholarship
SUU
North Dakota, doesn't have DI basketball, is this true?
South Dakota, doesn't have DI basketball, is this true?
UVU, not possible, no football

DII
Central Washington

You need to join as a FULL member ONLY. shouldn't that eliminate the dakotas and san diego? a DII move up seens unlikely. sjsu or ui dropping down won't happen by december which is when we want to add the school. so all i see left is suu.

FBS drop downs would imply the WAC implodes, if that's the case why not USU - They are not getting into the MWC anytime soon that bridge appears to be burned.

USU will NEVER move down, unless the NCAA forces them to. Forget about it. They would never allow themselves to be in the lowly Big Sky, playing "inferior" teams like Weber.

“Some of the things that happened this summer with the college landscape encouraged us to be proactive instead of having to react in case we lose a team,” said John Kasper, a Big Sky spokesman.

The Big Sky’s ultimate goal in the move is to be a 12-team football league with two competing divisions, Kasper said. For their 12th program, conference officials hope to add a full member program instead of just a football affiliate. SUU remains an option.

“We’re going to take our time with that,” Kasper said. “We’ll have meetings in October, and maybe the landscape will change before then.”

About schools dropping down, I don't think you are ever going to know what discussions have taken place, privately. There may well be good reason to be hessitant at this point. A few weeks ago things hinged on BYU. Now it appears that things will ultimately be determined on who can be lured into a crumbling WAC. You know that USU and UH want out, one way or another. Are the remaining schools going to want to suffer it out with a bunch of FCS and DII upstarts? Would you want to be one of those upstarts? There are more questions than answers. Hold onto your seats, you haven't seen anything yet!

The Big Sky is looking better all the time.

University of San Diego? They lost to Azusa Pacific a NAIA team 42 to 14 last week
It's not about stadium size or competitiveness that gets you in a bigger conference. (see Cal State Northridge.) it's about market, exposure, and ease of travel. A small private school doesn't quite fit the mold of the Sky, but there is some factors that make USD attractive, provided they could fund more scolarshps.

I would love to see the Vandals in our league again. If they want in, SUU would be out unless someone else leaves.

There is a great chance that UND could be added. Also, UVU has mentioned that they would be willing to create a football program to gain admittance into the Sky.

As for the WAC, I'm not so sure that it is totally dead; yet. There are rumours circulating that the WAC is preparing to invite a Big Sky member, because of the Sky's move yesterday. The WAC had been hoping to have the fall and early spring to conduct studies on who would be the best candidates for expansion. Yet, the Sky struck quickly by picking up two of their potential candidates. If this school does leave it will virtually ensure SUU's membership in the Sky, as well as UND's.

No matter, Right now, the Sky is a far better football conference than the WAC. However, the graduers and allure of FBS football, especially since this particular school thinks they should be on the same level as Boise State, and are overwhelmed with angst due to the Broncos success, could be to much for them to say no to a WAC invitation. Their pride will be their abrupt downfall once USU, LA Tech, and Hawaii find suitable homes elsewhere, and they end up begging to get back into the Sky. If not, I hope they enjoy their one postseason game in BOISE at the Humanitarian Bowl, that is if the WAC still has a spot in that bowl game, now that the Big Hitters are all gone.

Out of all the restructuring, I think USD is going to be the school that gets left out.

IF...a certain president declines a particular offer/invitation, we could see the Sky becoming the strongest FCS conference in the nation. The Sky would virtually be assured 4 playoff spots a year.

The playoffs lead to an actual National Championship game that will get more coverage than in the past, since it is going to be the day before the FBS championship. Right now, I think, the future of FCS football is looking bright.

I agree also, this move only solidifies the conference on the national map :)
