Thanks Slostang. Good Luck in the playoffs. You have a talented physical team.

Our offense was anemic. Our defense as always was stellar except for 2 blown coverages.

The program made great strides - 8-3 for the first time since 2003. We beat an FBS team and Montana at home, both firsts as well as an 8 game win streak.

Zach Bauman is not the franchise. Teams have solved him and he had no answer. He looked slow .He has taken a beating this season and I blame the OC for a one dimensional run offense.
SUU called UNC and they completely changed their defense and stopped him cold. He is no longer a secret weapon.

The good news is we are only losing 2 starters on Defense and 4 on Offense. The biggest loses? Trey Gilleo and Jarret Bilbrey. The team got some great experience this year and they will be back stronger and better.

At QB we lose nothing. The 2 backups are better than Cary Grossert. I had to shake my head the last 2 games. He was awful at times.

So as far as a coaching change...not happening. At least not till after next season. The first 2 conference games will tell alot. Montana at home and MSU in Bozeman. We will know what kind of a team we really have.

Overall great job to the team. I grade their performance a B because there were plays that didn't get made and thats no ones fault but the players on the field.
I give the Defense an A. They kept NAU is games when the Offense was sputtering.
The Offense gets a C
As far as coaches - OC gets a D-Head Coach a C
DC gets an A, LB - A DB's A, D LINE A

Looking forward to next year already! Go Jacks!
with souers, its obvious the first few games dont mean anything. we beat the griz at their homecoming and beat unlv this year

Well there we have it. Season over. This "special" year ended just like all the rest. No playoffs, and playing like crap at the end of the season. The second half choke is still alive and well. If we had not played Idaho State and UNC, we would have ended the season on a 4 game losing streak. So this season is no different than the others. We start off hot, and choke in the second half. Don't know who to blame, players? injuries? coaches?

Whatever it is, it needs to change. We can't continue to be a mediocre team. The biggest accomplishment in the last 10 years is beating Montana in Missoula. Really? are we satisfied with this? We need a change in course. In my opinion, we should start looking for a new coach that will take NAU out of the mediocrity pool it has been bathing in under our current coach.

I'm not a family member just an educated person and a long time NAU fan.

If you knew anything about that team you would know that the OC calls the plays. Blame him. Blame Zach bauman for his ineptitude and Cary Grossert for throwing to the other team and everyone who dropped a ball or lost a fumble.

Souers is no Bill Belicheck but his staff has to be held accountable as well as the players.

This was a great season. Could have been better but certainly a step in the right direction.

So lets not be Eeyore and say oh no were doomed, the sky is falling, why even bother to have a team, we'll just lose when it really counts anyway. oh dear..... You are a piece of work kid. I hope your future is brighter than your attitude. You really do major in Gloom and doom. :ohno:
my god you are such a fool. so jerome doesnt hire his own assistants? they just show up? ya jerome has no idea what scangarello does on offense. he just gives him free reign. doesnt watch any film or anything.

NAU is not a fraud. They are a good team that competed in one of the best conferences in the FCS and the finished 6-2 (8-3 overall). Good season. Hoping the Jacks get a payoff bid. They are a tough team that a lot of teams would not want to draw in the playoffs.

Thanks, SLOStang. NAU wasn't as good as few people proclaimed and they aren't as bad as some others thought at the end of the season. The team peaked early, grew stagnant on offense to end the season, were obviously affected by injuries at OL and running back but never once quit and were in every single game apart from that massacre in Tempe.

I moped around a few hours after the Cal Poly game and caught the NAU volleyball match only to mope some more after they played arguable their worst match of the season. Went out for a meal and barhopping with some old friends and woke up for a hike Sunday morning. Read in the paper about NAU's cross country program coming in fourth @ nationals. Listened to the radio broadcast of an impressive NAU mens basketball effort to get a road win (their first overall since December 29th of 2011).

The sun, indeed, rose and it was a new day. All is not lost. I'm sad that the last two weeks of football went to shit and stained an otherwise fantastic season. I've liked a lot of things that Souers has done over the years but I won't be surprised either if he is let go in the next year.

I'm excited for basketball season. Going to Tucson next Wednesday when NAU takes on U of A. They got ASU last year...why not U of A this year. :thumb:

what on earth could you like that souers has done over the years? the one playoff appearance? if you kept a monkey head coach long enough it would make the playoffs.

on a brighter note though, this jack murphy looks to be the real deal and I have loved what I have seen from the team so far. wish i could be there at tuscon

Because UA is back to where they were prior to the whole fiasco that surrounded Lutes health and finally retirement.

We have three freshman big men who can all play now.

I forget that sarcasm doesn't translate well in this medium.

NAU had a shot to beat U of A two years ago with a senior heavy team (Cameron Jones senior year) and darn near pulled it off. It's not going to happen this year but the joy of college basketball vs. college football is it can and occasionally does happen.

U of A is definitely improved but whether or not they're back to competing for national championships remains to be seen.

My cousin played for Coach Souers at the U of Montana. He speaks well of Souers. I know a couple down here in the desert who are snowbirds from Montana. Their son played for Souers @ the U of M in the mid 90s and they say their son would walk through a wall for Jerome. I've met Souers twice. I don't know him personally but I enjoyed talking to him.

That being said, I won't be surprised if he is relieved of his duties in the next few years if the Jacks don't make the playoffs. I think Souers deserves criticism for rarely winning big games. It seems you have a personal problem with Coach Souers, jacksdude, but criticism means someone cares. More Lumberjacks fans giving a damn is a good thing.

My take on football players being more than just football players (graduating....staying out of trouble....community outreach, etc.) is no secret and Coach Souers/NAU football have done a good job at that. You and I disagree on this as a point of emphasis. No reason to rehash this.

NAU's season was both inspiring and deflating.

Positives: They did better than just about anyone gave them credit for including myself. I'll even give credit where it's due...oceanvue predicted it in the preseason. NAU was one of the best teams left out of the playoffs. The three Jacks losses were to a middle of the road Pac-12 ASU team, the Big Sky co-champs - Cal Poly - and a Southern Utah team that took out the number one ranked team in the country. Five road wins. First win over an bigger school in ages. First win over Montana in ages. Defense was deep and consistent throughout the season. Offense was great up til the last month. No quit in this team. Lots of talented, experienced kids returning next season. Jacks seem ready to compete for the Big Sky again next year.

Negatives: The Big Sky championship was there for the taking. The killer instinct present earlier in the season wasn't there the last month. Depth and execution on offense wavered over the last month. Another apparent end of the season fade by the Lumberjacks.

Looking forward to baskeball. Go Jacks!

ya i have a personal problem with him. I am an alum, and he is the head football coach of my university, thats my problem.

and heck yes go basketball. I love what coach murphy has done with this team. I like after the loss vs. Jacksonville state on the radio coach murphy was talking about players sitting on the bench and being assistants if they dont play better. Now that is a coach, holding players responsible and forcing them to play with heart. This guy truly wants to win and it shows. I think he will do great things for this basketball program.
