what on earth could you like that souers has done over the years? the one playoff appearance? if you kept a monkey head coach long enough it would make the playoffs.
My cousin played for Coach Souers at the U of Montana. He speaks well of Souers. I know a couple down here in the desert who are snowbirds from Montana. Their son played for Souers @ the U of M in the mid 90s and they say their son would walk through a wall for Jerome. I've met Souers twice. I don't know him personally but I enjoyed talking to him.
That being said, I won't be surprised if he is relieved of his duties in the next few years if the Jacks don't make the playoffs. I think Souers deserves criticism for rarely winning big games. It seems you have a personal problem with Coach Souers, jacksdude, but criticism means someone cares. More Lumberjacks fans giving a damn is a good thing.
My take on football players being more than just football players (graduating....staying out of trouble....community outreach, etc.) is no secret and Coach Souers/NAU football have done a good job at that. You and I disagree on this as a point of emphasis. No reason to rehash this.
NAU's season was both inspiring and deflating.
Positives: They did better than just about anyone gave them credit for including myself. I'll even give credit where it's due...oceanvue predicted it in the preseason. NAU was one of the best teams left out of the playoffs. The three Jacks losses were to a middle of the road Pac-12 ASU team, the Big Sky co-champs - Cal Poly - and a Southern Utah team that took out the number one ranked team in the country. Five road wins. First win over an bigger school in ages. First win over Montana in ages. Defense was deep and consistent throughout the season. Offense was great up til the last month. No quit in this team. Lots of talented, experienced kids returning next season. Jacks seem ready to compete for the Big Sky again next year.
Negatives: The Big Sky championship was there for the taking. The killer instinct present earlier in the season wasn't there the last month. Depth and execution on offense wavered over the last month. Another apparent end of the season fade by the Lumberjacks.
Looking forward to baskeball. Go Jacks!
