The Big Sky is at 13 teams for football now...

If the Big Sky stays at 13 teams for football it will make it tough to split into two divisions (I have a strong feeling that UM is headed to the WAC which would leave the BSC at 10/12 teams and 2 divisions would then work). What I think they should do if they stay at 13 teams is have each school have two schools designated as permanent rivals of each school and play them each year. After that rotate through the remaining 10 teams for the other 6 or 7 conference games (depending if they go with 8 or 9 total conference games). This is what the Big Ten does.

Here is how I would designate rivals:

UM: MSU/EWU
EWU: UM/PSU
PSU: EWU/ISU
ISU: PSU/WSU
WSU: ISU/SUU
SUU: WSU/NAU
NAU: SUU/NC
NC: NAU/UND
UND: NC/MSU
MSU: UND/UM
CP: UCD/Sac
UCD: CP/Sac
Sac: UCD/CP

What do you think?

Here is an even better idea that I got from the Sioux board.

Have each team have 4 rivals they play every year and then play 4 of the other 8 teams every other year.

Possible rivals:

UM: MSU/EWU/UND/WSU
EWU: UM/PSU/CP/Sac
PSU: EWU/CP/Sac/UCD
ISU: UND/WSU/MSU/UNC
WSU: ISU/SUU/UM/NAU
SUU: WSU/NAU/UNC/UCD
NAU: SUU/UNC/WSU/MSU
UNC: NAU/UND/SUU/ISU
UND: UNC/MSU/UM/ISU
MSU: UND/UM/ISU/NAU
CP: UCD/Sac/EWU/PSU
UCD: CP/Sac/SUU/PSU
Sac: UCD/CP/PSU/EWU

I like it. I like it a lot.

nodakvindy over on the Sioux baord spent some time on this and this is what he came up with:

Year 1 UCD UNC WSU SUU
Year 2 MSU UND ISU NAU

PSU: EWU/CP/Sac/UCD
Year 1 UM UND ISU NAU
Year 2 MSU UNC WSU SUU

ISU: UND/WSU/MSU/UNC
Year 1 UM PSU UCD SUU
Year 2 EWU Sac CP NAU

WSU: ISU/SUU/UM/NAU
Year 1 MSU UND EWU CP
Year 2 PSU UCD Sac UNC

SUU: WSU/NAU/UNC/UCD
Year 1 UM EWU ISU Sac
Year 2 MSU UND PSU CP

NAU: SUU/UNC/WSU/MSU
Year 1 UND Sac PSU UCD
Year 2 UM EWU ISU CP

UNC: NAU/UND/SUU/ISU
Year 1 MSU Sac EWU CP
Year 2 UM PSU WSU UCD

UND: UNC/MSU/UM/ISU
Year 1 PSU CP WSU NAU
Year 2 EWU Sac SUU UCD

MSU: UND/UM/ISU/NAU
Year 1 Sac UCD UNC WSU
Year 2 CP PSU EWU SUU

CP: UCD/Sac/EWU/PSU
Year 1 UM UND WSU UNC
Year 2 MSU ISU SUU NAU

UCD: CP/Sac/SUU/PSU
Year 1 MSU EWU ISU NAU
Year 2 UM UND WSU UNC

SAC: UCD/CP/PSU/EWU
Year 1 MSU SUU NAU UNC
Year 2 UM UND ISU WSU

USD deciding to go to the Summit/MVFC will really screw with the scheduling. It will definitely affect hoops scheduling more than football scheduling. I do like the 4 team grouping alternative; however the traditional rivalries will have to find a way to stay intact.

I use to play NAIA ball in North Dakota....you guys will enjoy the trip there to Grand Forks. It has a nice stadium, great college football feel to it. We use to scrimmage UND, had a blast playing there. The new venues will be fun for the teams and fans to check out.

What do you guys think about Utah Valley joining the Big Sky as a hoops only member? They are normaly a competitive basketball team with a nive 8,500 seat arena which no big sky team has ever won in.

Another reason, is that UVU has stated that they are interested in creating football, if they join as a basketball member, we could eventually add them as a football member as well.

South Dakota processing in as well to travel-partner with North Dakota. They have a rather lengthy approval process according to the video: http://bigskyconf.com/index.aspx

My guess is the 7-team divisions will look something like this:

Pacific Sky Divison

PSU-EWU
Sac-UCDavis
NAU-SUU
CPSU-

Mountain Sky Division

NDak-SDak
MT-MSU
WSU-ISU
NCU-

Still room for two more to pair with Cal Poly and Northern Colorado

BroadwayVik,

South Dakota is NOT joining the Big Sky at all. They heading for the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Summitt League for everything else!!!

You're right. And I wouldn't be surprised if NDak eventually swapped horses midstream too.

University of South Dakota Passes on Big Sky Conference (Posted: Nov 4, 2010 4:57 PM by Richie Melby)
Three days after Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton announced the addition of the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University as core members in the Big Sky Conference, the University of South Dakota has decided to go another route.

At the beginning of the week Fullerton said the Big Sky Conference was "on the verge" of announcing USD as their 12th core member, but on Thursday officials within the university annouced the Coyotes would join the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The decision will pair USD with rival South Dakota State in the MVFC, as the two teams haven't played on the football field since 2003.

The move will leave the Big Sky Conference with 11 core members, 13 for football after Cal Poly and UC Davis joined in September. The Conference was expected to split into two seven-team divisions for football, but with South Dakota moving to the Missouri Valley Conference, divisions will likely not be created.

Below is the statement released by Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton regarding the University of South Dakota's decision to join the Missouri Valley Football Conference:

OGDEN, UTAH (Nov. 4, 2010) - Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton has issued a statement regarding the University of South Dakota's decision to accept membership to the Missouri Valley Football Conference:

"Obviously we are disappointed that the University of South Dakota is not joining us, but we understand the decision and we wish them the best of luck. We knew all along that this was a possibility. When making a decision of this magnitude, there are many constituents throughout a state that have a say in these matters.

"The last two months have been an exciting time for the Big Sky Conference. We've added Cal Poly and UC Davis to our football fold, and the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah as full members. Our league presidents chose to be aggressive during this time of conference affiliation upheaval. We have solidified and strengthened the Big Sky Conference. We have a vision of what we can be in the West, and that hasn't changed."
