The elephant in the room

OK, it looks like nobody else has the onions to say it so I will.

This team is going 0-12... plain and simple, that's it...

So what does that mean? It should mean the firing of the entire staff and AD but I doubt it will because nobody cares. Pathetic but true.

Slight sidebar... I happened to be in Greeley today (why? don't ask) and walked into Gojo's looking for a UNC hat, T-shirt, anything... finding nothing asked the clerk if they carried UNC merchandise and he said "no." So a "sporting goods" store located 2 blocks from campus doesn't carry UNC merchandise? Is that relevant to a terrible athletic program... I think it is but that's ultimately up to you to connect the dots... OK, here's a hint, think total disconnection from the community.

Bottom line these guys are on scholarship and they aren't holding up their end of the bargain. You got your free tuition so step up and have some onions... if not, hit the road.

If I had any say everyone gets released and then you have the opportunity to come back and prove you deserve a scholarship next year.

OK, let the flaming begin but until this pathetic team proves me wrong then I'm right.... Also, to all you rose colored glasses types do some research on Praire View A&M because that name is going to start popping up more and more as the loses pile up.

heres my thing........its not so much that this team hasnt won since Sept. 16,2006.......its the way theyve lost alot of these games since Downing has been here..........and the fact that this year's team is worse than last years..........consider the following.......

last year
UC Davis 38-7
Portland State 45-3
Idaho State 41-13
Eastern Washington 34-0
Montana 53-21
Northern Arizona 54-3

This Year
Chadron 31-0
San Diego 49-13

Count em.........thats 7 losses to 1AA or DII teams by more than 30 points in 2 years......wait theres more

Last Year opponents outscored UNC 373-129.........which works out to an average of 22 points more a game....and the defense giving up an average of 33 points a game....in 3 games this year.......143-19....which if you do the math works out to an average of 47-6 a game.....

If Scott Downing knows whats best for this program he will leave on his own at the end of the season. If not.......can him and his assistants.

Not to pile on but is Downing the most milquetoast guy out there? His personality is just blaaaaaaaah... he seems like the perfect guy to run the neighborhood branch of the credit union but to lead troops into battle... umm, no.

Any quality coach would be coming out of his skin with the mailed in gutless performances we've seen in the last 2 seasons. That doesn't seem to be the case here, according to our "coach" we are showing a lot of good signs. So I guess that answers it...

Jay better hope the basketball program has a hell of a season. That's the only thing that can save him now.

yeah, I don't see us winning a game this year. Maybe Weber St on homecoming but that's going to be a stretch. Too bad we couldn't just fast-foward to December becaus it's going to be painful to watch. These players and coaches don't have the hunger for the game.

I agree with everyone that if the basketball teams don't have a good season, Jay will be out too.

On a positive note. Lindsy HOT Benson is doing a great job with the volleyball team. They're undefeated in conference play. Seriously though great job!

0 - 12 is a foregone conclusion at this point. The question is can the bears keep a game within 21 points. Looking at their remaining schedule there may be a few opps (mainly Weber for homecoming) but I am not holding my breath any more. This team will set new records for futility. We can only hope someone steps in to make the necessary changes soon.

What's sad to consider are the long term repercussions.

Is it a coincidence freshman enrollment is down this fall?

All those high school seniors last year hearing nothing but negative about UNC I can't blame them for being turned off.

Right or wrong to a very large extent the athletic department it the P.R. presence of the university and when they are terrible it drags the entire university down into the muck.

I would say there might be whole-sale changes at UNC and it's because of one person: Bill Ritter.

Bill Owens is buddy-buddy with Hank Brown, the Nortons and the Monforts and now that he's out of office that could change the dynamics of UNC big-time. Ritter is much more pro-education then Owens and he WILL make different recomendations to the board of trustees. Ritter will want to put his own people on the board of trustees and those people may not want Norton for pres.

I don't think Norton has done a horrible job. You must remember that public education meaning k-12 and universities took a huge blow during the Owens years and all Colorado universities struggled with budgets. She and Brown both gave raises to faculty too. UNC has always struggled to keep good professors but those raises could help.

Someone I know worked at CSU, in admissions, and said that when CSU was dominating the MWC, enrollment went through the roof. People want to be associated with a winner. She said that people would call and the first question out of their mouth would be, " How is the football team going to do next year?" That being said, I still think Downing needs more of a chance. I'm not a big believer in the whole " He has to have guys that will fit his system!" I'm not sure that UNC has a system right now

There is no doubt that there is not a system in place. Downing clearly has not established an offensive or defensive philosophy. Year one the spread offense, year 2 pro style offense with some potential option thrown in for good measure. Are you kidding me? I won't even bother with the defense because I'm convinced we must be only running 8 guys out there instead of 11.

Heck the staff cannot even commit to starters. They claim they are going to quit the revolving door but they still waffle on that and yank the QB every other quarter. They gave Woods the ball the whole game and he proved that was wise. They need to do the same with a QB and then trust themselves enought to go with him. I don't really care who it is because obviously they both stink, just go with one and take your medicine. Maybe without looking over their shoulder each incomplete pass they might loosen up and play marginally better.

uncfootballrules, I couldn't have said it better myself. It must be the beer talking. It has been proven that hops and barley, mixed scientifically in a sterile environment, create an intelligence enhancing elixer. Oh what the hell...we're just smarter than those people that don't drink.

Ahhhh beeeeerrrrrr - the only thing that will get me through the homecoming game this year. In all fairness, I think that the administration should start serving hard liquor at the games. If we are going to be subject to this level of football, we should be able to adequately dull our senses without risking permanent bladder damage...

We can use beer as an excuse for a lot of things! Wasn't it Homer (Simpson, not the Greek philosopher) that said, "Beer...the cause and answer to all of life's problems!" This is my mantra, but please feel free to use it.
