the flooded stott

If Oregon is getting $200 million from the state for a new arena the Viks should ask for a fraction of that to get one of their own.

The timing won't be more perfect to ask for a paltry sum compared to what the sports bohemoth that is Oregon is gonna get.

Perhaps it's more complicated

Oregon's not getting $200 million from the state. They're using Phil Knight's stash to back up some bonds they'll pay back.

It's a matter of who you ask for the money.

OTOH, who could PSU convince to officially condemn the building and at least make things public enough to raise a good stink? Sometimes, you have to be a squeaky wheel to enable the white knight to make the rescue.

Thanks for the info Pounder I knew I could count on you /users/31/07/37/smiles/880372.gif

Thanks for the update Ian.

Maybe if we didn't have intramural activities such as softball occuring on our D1 basketball venue, stuff like this wouldn't happen.

AAAAAHHHHHGGGGG!!!!!

Ok, I got that out of my system. We really need a new basketball arena. Can we at least start passing around the hat? I would love to see the school come out with a real plan for what it would take to build an arena and where they'd like to place it. Once that is done, we could start a grassroots effort to chip in. I know this is way easier said than done, but PSU has to start somewhere and the time to start was, well, when we reinstated basketball.

I was really hoping to see something about a new basketball venue in the Mission Statement of the Viking Athletic Fund.

Is it on the radar? If so what are the possible solutions? What information did the feasibility study yield? What sort of price tag is associated? What other milestones (Student Center) need to be completed?

I think school has a few projects ahead of this:
1. Shattuck Hall renovation for architecture school (In progress)
2. New Student Rec Center (In progress)
3. Upgrades to Science Building 2
4. Lincoln Hall renovation

After that, it looks undecided, and it will be up to those with important voices (the boosters who were at the Glanville pre-hire dinner) to get in the ears of the administration to put this project on the agenda for the next 5-8 years.

As far as the cost, it's hard to know. How many seats are they going to want? 3,000? 7,000? Will it stay in the same location?Last edited by on 2007-12-04, 02:30

As far as the cost, it's hard to know. How many seats are they going to want? 3,000? 7,000? Will it stay in the same location? I'd guess that it will cost no less than $100 million, but naming rights could bring back about $5 million. How much $ can be found in outside sources?

$100 million seems a little high. What did Gonzaga's new arena cost? That one seems like a good model for us as far as scale.

Just answered my own question. Gonzaga's new arena cost $23 million. Adjust for inflation, increased cost of construction in Portland, etc, and you might get to $50 million, but it doesn't seem like it would reach $100 million. Any other good examples for comparison?

Never mind, collegiate facilities cost less than I originally thought. Now I'm guessing between 30 and 35 million, but it may be even less.

College fans don't necessarily require luxury accomodations... especially students.

I'm not sure how many luxury suites PSU could sell for basketball. That's not out of the realm of consideration. If you're building something like the Rose Garden, the suites add a LOT to the cost because of where they're usually positioned... something that doesn't have to happen for a 5-7K arena on campus. Furthermore, if it's on PSU's land, they're not making new land acquisitions, they're not paying property tax on it... with other arenas, land can be 25% to 33% of the total project cost.

It has been decided:

The Portland State men's basketball game with Lewis and Clark, previously scheduled for the Peter W. Stott Center this Wednesday, has been moved to the Rose Garden. Tip-off will take place at the regularly scheduled 7:05 p.m. time.

The game has been moved due to water damage on the Stott Center playing surface which occurred last week. The PSU men's home game site for next week's game against Cal Poly (Dec. 12) has yet to be determined. The possibility remains that the floor will be repaired and available in the Stott Center at that time.

Portland State basketball ticket prices will remain the same at the Rose Garden, and previously purchased tickets will be honored at the door.

As previously announced, the Portland State women's team will play on Thursday at Concordia College against UC Santa Barbara. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
