PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland State University football coach Jerry Glanville said Monday he's not trying to make a fashion statement with his new hat.
Instead, Glanville donned a Civil War-era hat to honor local guardsmen in Iraq.
Glanville said he will wear the hat in practice every day until the return of the 3,000 guardsmen, who deployed to Iraq last month.
"I won't go a day in practice where you don't think about where they are and what they're doing for us," Glanville said. "You just can't thank them (enough.) They're no longer with their family -- I've been where they're going and it's not fun."
Glanville visited Iraq a few years ago and was moved by his visit. He received his hat from the Oregon National Guard office on campus at PSU.
"I promised the United States Army, in their honor, (that) I will wear this hat until they come home," Glanville said. "They left out of Washington, but they were our state's soldiers."
Portland State opens its football season against Oregon State University on Sept. 5.
