The PAC-MWC Dominoes Begin to Fall/Conference Realignment

Dr. Wood has done more for athletics than any other president ever at SAC, but he needs to read the room. Speak softly, and carry a big sting.
I still can't tell exactly what Wood has done for the football program and I still don't understand what "FBS or bust" means. My concern is if he isn't able to pull off the FBS move that he is putting football in jeopardy of going away like we have seen happen with so many other CSU schools.
Since there is no clear path to FBS inclusion does anyone want to explain what "bust" means?

I think you nailed it. That is my understanding of bust. Though unlikely to happen soon, but if football doesn't get a lifeline in the next realignment phase, football as an FCS independent could die on the vine. And, I don't think there is a realistic chance NCAA reverses course over the next five years and grants Sac State FBS status.

Which is why he moved the program to the Big West. With the Big Sky, a condition of membership is having football and provided a safety cushion in protecting football.

All bets are off now. Especially if he is not building a stadium on campus, another buffer of protection. Since the stadium will now be off site, temporary, it is easy to make disappear.

WTF did he leave the Big Sky until he had a football conference in hand!?

Either criminal, just plain stupid or crazy like a fox.

I think it was to show how "serious" and "willing" Sac was. Two things that are not quantifiable on their own: seriousness and willingness. Which is why a lot of people think it was a huge mistake to leave a great football conference prematurely as it obviously hasn't helped.

Everyone could still be proven wrong, of course. But man, its not looking good right now.

I feel like baseball is going to hold the BW together more strongly than we think...
Big West baseball is pretty awesome.

Fullerton, UCSB, Cal Poly, Irvine.. It's good baseball (Fullerton will come back)

Cal Poly currently has the highest baseball attendance in California. 3rd Highest attendance in the West Coast behind Oregon State and Oregon (who we beat in the playoffs).. you guys should come and visit Baggett Stadium for a series if you have a free weekend.

Beautiful Facility, been there a couple times. Always surprised that UCSB didn't have something nicer, great location though!

I imagine the consultation from the attorney and he is following his strategic instructions.

I love Hornet Football. But truthfully the BS FCS revenues are not commensurate with the cost to field a highly competitive FB program staying FCS long term.
The big Sky required us to be full members and the Olympic sports travel costs i Imagine were losing revenue as well.
The last 2 FB playing CA teams will not leave BW / MWC to go to BigSky for that reason,
Either GROW into FBS during these next few turbulent years. Or be frozen in time FCS for another 10 years most likely,
We do not know what the ncaa specialist legal team advised us to do to position ourselves to pressure our admittance to FBS Indy or jeopardize themselves to a big lawsuit. Playing poker faced without emotions on the topic is wise from Dr Wood. Keep checking off the required boxes to win FBS status.
In the interim let’s hope HC FB finishes strong season. Basketball becomes a media darling as a bonus to attract an FBS invitation. I’m enjoying the ride hoping to slip into the playoffs if we do what we’re capable of. Stingers UP

Big West travel is cheaper. Sports like XC, track, some extent golf are not affected by travel changes. But flying once to SoCal (say Long Beach) then a bus to next game ( Fullerton) is significant savings of time and money.

Doesn’t matter if football doesn’t work. I hope Sac succeeds in football, but this all could be a bait and switch prepping for its demise as well. I believe San Jose’s fake stadium is a long term hedge if they have to punt on football without explicitly saying so.

Seems like the crash outs are from people expecting and wanting immediate results with no set backs along the way. Dr. Wood hasn't helped with his terribly overly optimistic timelines for deliverables he's hyped up. A lot of the ranting and raving is from people who have no clue about the level of effort and coordination needed to get major moves/projects/programs executed because they've never been in the arena.

I'm not getting the crash out over the '26 schedule. That was always going to be a bumpy ride given the timing of the departure from the BSC, the FBS application and the lack of available opponents when those decisions were made. If Dr. Wood is willing to pay folks to travel here for a game then we'll fill out a schedule. It'll be just as ugly and unappealing as most of the BSC lineups have been over the years.

Again, the stadium is the biggest lift needed in this whole saga. If that doesn't get finalized then nothing else falls into place.

Regarding the "FBS or Bust" mantra, we'll have football so long as the university president is willing to fund it. That has always been the case and will always be the case. This applies to every CSU and UC that has dropped the sport in the past. Nothing other than lack of administrative fortitude has cost them their football programs.

As far as other schools having some of their programs go to the MWC, I'm not sure that is a direct reflection on our schools efforts.

It is a financial decision to play oly sports in CA and put the bulk of the financial pie into football. This decision includes yanking our sports from the BSC effective immediately. If football gets rolling, it will theoretically be easier to build out other facilities and make a bid for a larger conference down the road.
