The Return of MBT?

Now that we have a perfectly placed BYE week, what are the poster's opinions of what should happen with MBT?

First of all, is he healthy? Is he even planning on returning?

I think we can all agree that Flem had done an admirable job and will definitely be a stud next year for us with a year under his belt and Reed, Hendershott, Hilliard, Shaw and Norise all returning to the fold. But, is he the best win now option? He's much more mobile that MBT, but his arm can't compare. We never really got to see what MBT could do to slice and dice a defense with Hilliard running wild behind him...

Anyways, I think that if MBT is healthy enough to practive next week, he should be the starter after all he's done for the program. He at least deserves a shot to get his job back. If he starts throwing pics left and right, then maybe you go to the less volitile Flem option.

MBT came back for another year even though he didnt have to, I think he has earned and deserves to play if he's healthy, however, I would like to see a rotation in the games between the two QB's. Both QB's have qualities that can be used in different situations, I think they could easily be used to exploit the opposing teams' defense.

We should play the best person.

In the future it would be beneficial for us to recruit a Fleming prototype. I have thoroughly enjoyed his running ability and bringing a whole new dimension to the offense.

CP has done well over the past few years because they play QB's like Fleming: good thrower, great runner and smart field general. It takes too long to develop a purely pocket passer at this level of play.

I was looking forward to MBT being the QB this season. After MBT's unfortunate injury in the first game however Fleming has stepped up big time under a lot of pressure in some very tough situations. Fleming has settled and improved a lot and I think he has earned the role of starter at this point. I don't see why both couldn't have a valuable role in the remainder of the season. I think that having to deal with the mobility of Fleming or the strong arm of MBT would present problems for opponents. It would be great to have both available. I am glad that we have the opportunity to red shirt freshmen Garrett Safron who the coaches must have seen something in him to list him as back up for both MBT and Fleming. Carmazzi came in to finish off the Northern Colorado game and showed some speed avoiding the rush but we didn't get a chance to see him pass.
Don't forget Tommy Edwards who has to sit out this year after transferring from the Citadel . He was the CCA freshman of the year last season after starting for the Citadel as a freshmen so he must have some talent.
There should be a healthy battle for starting QB next season, a nice situation to have!

At one time, the LA Rams had TWO HOF QBs, Bob Waterfield and Norm Van Brocklin. "Buckets" would play the first quarter, and the "Dutchman" the second, with the second half going to the one with the hot hand. They had some of the most explosive offenses in NFL history doing this.

But success with musical quarterbacks is rare. In fact, this might be the only example of it. Leaves a lot of questions for the rest of the season, doesn't it?

It’s handy to have a QB that can run but Poly recruits those guys because they run double slot bone/veer, a la the military academies. Our offense calls for a tall, stand in the pocket, pick them apart guy. Fleming's running ability is icing on the cake. Mixing the quarterbacks as a change up could be cool and another answer for the predictable offense from the first three weeks. Anybody know how many of those quarterbacks are on scholarship?

I would love to see MBT as the main guy with some Fleming sprinkled in. Run a couple sprint options with him on first down, then slide him in again on an option pass on a first down. Sperbeck could really get creatively psychological with first down passing and third down running depending on the QB in the game.

I think that HHD mentioned that Garrett Safron was a preferred walk on. Not sure about the others, as I recall
they just got a verbal from a highly rated tall (6'3"?) high school QB from Santa Monica.

Thanks for the clarification Kadeezy, that kid does look like a stud! Safron is the one from Santa Monica, with many QBs in the mix it's getting confusing!

Interesting concept, Kadeezy. It gives the defense something extra to think about. The problem with it is that if we're hidebound to that when Fleming comes in, teams will catch on to that pretty fast and set the defense to stuff what he's likely to do.

Of course, if the staff realizes that going in, they COULD give him some audilbe options to take advantage of that.

I think a rotating QB system is a terrible idea. Unless Fleming regresses, then I say stick with him (assuming MBT is healthy enough to return). Of course we are past the harder part of the schedule so if the Hornets jump out to a considerable lead, why not put MBT or another QB in to get some mop up duty.

I'm not a fan of rotating QB's. You lose consistency and timing. Fleming has done an awesome job with such short notice, too bad he is a Jr. and not a Frosh.

Fleming is our starter now. He's really into the grove now, especially after the last three weeks. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time (funny how that always happens)!

Let's get Smith back......I say keep Fleming. He has been doing an awesome job and is more mobile than MBT. MBT has always had an issues with his lead feet. Time for him to retire :)

Is there any word on Bethel-Thompson being available this week? His eight week recovery is up this Saturday. It'd be nice to have him available if Fleming is struggling w/his accuracy again.

Mac saw his doctor yesterday and his recovery is good but continuing. Mobility of his ankle is good and with the plate and screws, strength is good. Mac is planning to be at practice today and he'll see how it goes.

We need to be able to move the ball down field consistently through their air. Defenses are starting to slow down HIlliard a little game by game....

Do I remember it correctly that Jason Smith had health issues that caused him to pass on his senior year? i remember thinking he really had a bright future when i saw him play as a freshman.

it would be a shame if bethel-thompson can't come back after an injury in the 1st game of the season. any chance he would medical redshirt and try to come back next season? or, is this it? always tough to see a kid miss out on his senior year due to an injury.

My guess is that he would be done. He is a very smart and articulate young man with a passion for politics. I heard that he had to be talked into playing this season, because he had decided on furthering his education. I don't think he would put it off for another season.
