Very interesting. Looks like our quarterbacks had a great game, yet our defense made important stops. The yardage seems a lot less lopsided than last game and previous years. Either our defense is taking a step up, or our offense is taking a step down. We will just have to see come Fall. Looking forward to next season!

It seems as if Gage Gubrud is playing the best. It wouldn't surprise me if he starts, looking at his HS career he was captain in every sport he played which tells me he has a lot of confidence. Anyone who saw the scrimmage have an opinion? According to Jim, Conner Richardson left the program so we are down to 3 QB's so it wouldn't surprise me to see a transfer.

I haven't gotten to any of the scrimmages this Spring, but I am getting the same impression about Gage Gubrud. I thought he was average at best at the beginning of last fall. He must have really developed, because his statlines have been very very good.

Anyone know where Richardson went? Interesting that he would leave in the middle of Spring Ball.

Edit: Here are the notes I had on him from last fall:

Day 1: Gage Gubrud: Another incoming freshman, but I don't know what to make of this QB. Gage stands at 6'2 and weighs 195 pounds. Stumbled at the beginning and I wouldn't put the blame on him. Gage lined up under a second string center and had to contend with low and inaccurate snaps time and time again. At one point he had a snap which flew up to his facemask, he tried to recover and toss the ball to Jalen Moore(?). The ball was inaccurate, dropped and returned by the defense for a touchdown. Like Richardson, Gubrud seemed to get more opportunities and played better later on, but his playing time was limited and it was difficult to assess this quarterback.

And I guess there were a lot of good things I saw from him, but I just did not remember

Day 2: Gage Gubrud also had splendid throws. He had a lot of redemption for his tentativeness last week. The poor kid had to contend AGAIN with low snaps from the backup center, but was ready and recovered from them quickly. Any low snaps he scooped right up and would hurl a good ball to the wide receivers.

Went to the Red-White scrimmage today. Thought all of the QB's did some nice things. West has a cannon and made a very impressive throw early on to start off the scrimmage. Only issue with West is being able to handle the pressure up the middle. If he doesn't consistently step-up in the pocket he seems to make some throws where a lot of velocity is taken off his ball due to the pressure. When he's able to step up and drive the ball, he looks solid. Gubrud and Hennessey impress me. They have more mobility than West and both are very accurate. Gubrud went 10 for 11 and Hennessey went 7 for 7. Both made nice throws and threw touchdown passes. I really like that fact that both of these guys can get out of the pocket and make plays. Hennessey put his head down and ran through some defenders early on which showed me a lot of toughness on his part. I think the thing I liked the most about our young QB's is that they didn't force the ball or make any glaring mistakes. That can't be overlooked because it shows where they are at above the shoulders. I can see either one of these guys running Baldwin's offense down the line and doing a great job, especially after they gain some experience. They both showed a lot of poise. Based on what I saw today, I think West will begin the year as starter (because of his experience), but it would not surprise me at all if either Gubrud or Hennessey eventually took over the job and ran with it. All of the QB's are capable.

One guy that stood out today was Simba Webster on kickoff returns. This guys is going to be special. When he touches the ball in open space he is ABSOLUTELY ELECTRIC. I can't wait so see him mixed in with Bourne, Kupp, Hill, and Splendorio. Zach Eagle and Stu Stiles also looked great at WR. Both made plays. I wish they would have given Terence Grady more looks. You can't coach 6'5". That boy has a big body and mismatch written all over him. He is reeking with potential. Back to Simba though, I really believe he is going to give the Big Sky nightmares when he touches the ball in the open field (especially on kickoffs!) Still trying to work out the "high snap" issue. West is 6'4" so he can pluck those high snaps out of the air, but this issue will need to be resolved soon. Games are lost because of QB center exchanges. Defense looked ok. Kacmarcik was all over the place. Love what he brings to the table. Overall, I thought the team made progress today. Can't wait to see this team when they start to gel in the fall.

This is an amazing write up Rafter! Thank you for the recap. How did our runningbacks look?

I never played Center, but is it really that difficult to get the ball in the correct spot with some consistency? That really needs to be worked out.

When Neary was in at center, the snaps were good. Neary was a first team all-conference guard last year, so I would be surprised if they moved him to center.

Guard... Center... Not a helluva lot of difference. Most interior linemen are interchangeable in the two positions.

Was Boatright the struggling center?

My personal experience isn't too deep, but I played guard in high school and didn't make the cut for center. They had me try out and I did okay snapping the ball when it was just me and the quarterback. But when I had to think about getting the correct block and picking up blitzes, I wasn't able to put together any type of consistency. Ultimately, they just kept me at guard.

You would think with enough practice though, the snapping would be fixed. My center phase only lasted about two weeks in Fall camp, but hasn't Boatwright been getting reps at center for years now?

Rjones,

Wilson and Moore only carried the ball 8 times each. Didn't think it was enough for either to get into a rhythm with the O-line. Probably cause we were practicing a bunch of situational football during the scrimmage. Both had a few solid runs. I really like the way Wilson makes cuts in the hole. Very shifty! Still thinking back to the PSU game last year when I say that. Still not sure what to think of Kindle. I haven't seem him play enough. He did have a couple of 1-yard TD's. I'm wondering if either of the two RB's from this year's recruiting class will play immediately next year??? Both look very impressive on film. Running game should be solid next year. With our WR's and West's arm strength, defenses won't be able to crowd the box. Should make for some nice running lanes no matter who is getting the carries. I like our depth at that position and it is much needed. Those guys take a beating. I see another 500+ carries this next year which will give us some much needed balance on offense. No better friend to a young QB than a great running game. Wanted to say that I'm excited about our tight ends too. They catch then RUN with some "get outta my way attitude." I think they are in for a big year.

We have one of the most mobile OL kids in the nation coming in soon at Center, and he was an All American coming into high school. Snaps aren't a problem for him and blocking on the second level is his strength. Expect him to push for time right away. He is coming in ready to go. :coffee:
